Magoo as callow youth doesn't work too well, save for the ending.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a Mister Magoo short done by UPA Studios. There will be spoilers ahead:

Waldo, contrary to the credits listed here, isn't in this one. It's a flashback withing a framing sequence where Magoo accosts someone at a club demanding payment of an old wager.

We get to meet Magoo in his "prime", where he is far less interesting than the older character. In a young man, his nearsightedness is just rather ridiculous rather than comical. Magoo has bet his friend that he can get an actress to dine with him. In true Magoo fashion, he winds up wandering onto the stage during a play just when the male lead has pitched a hissy fit and refused to go on with the performance.

The performance, such as it is, goes on with adaptations by the performers around Magoo's antics. Most of this isn't all that humorous. In the end, Magoo believes he's won his wager. Why he would wait so long (other than he's Magoo)to collect is not explained. The best gag is the ending, which is worth seeing.

Shout! Factory has released a four disc DVD box set of the Magoo theatrical shorts and a Magoo feature. The set is excellent and worth getting.
