Cineastes the world over know about the scandal surrounding F.W. Murnau's horror classic "Nosferatu." It's clearly an adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, "Dracula," but Murnau infamously didn't obtain the rights to adapt Stoker's book into a screenplay. He changed the names of the characters -- most notably Count Dracula was changed into Count Orlock -- but that didn't stop Stoker's estate from suing Prana Film, the production company. Every copy of "Nosferatu" was ordered to be destroyed. Thanks to shiftlessness in this task, however, several prints survived, and audiences can enjoy and be terrified by "Nosferatu" to this day. For my money, it's one of the scariest movies ever made. ("The Lighthouse" director Robert Eggers is currently remaking it.)
In Rolf Giesen's 2019 book "The Nosferatu Story: The Seminal Horror Film, Its Predecessors and Its Enduring Legacy," the premiere of "Nosferatu" is described in detail, and Prana...

Thomas Vinterberg, the Oscar-winning director of Another Round, is turning to television for his next project, signing on to adapt the fantasy novel The Brothers Lionheart as a limited event series for The Morning Show producers Media Res.
Vinterberg will adapt the beloved children’s book, from Pippi Longstocking author Astrid Lindgren together with Tony and Olivier Award-winning British playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime). Both will executive produce the series together with Michael Ellenberg, Lars Blomgren and Lindsey Springer of Media Res, alongside The Astrid Lindgren Company.
While not as well known outside internationally as Pippi Longstocking, Lindgren’s coming-of-age tale of two brothers, Karl and Jonathan Lion, in the mythical land of Nangiyala, and their battle against the evil tyrant Tengil, is a family classic in Scandinavia and has been translated into some 50 languages worldwide.

Seeing Anthony Dod Mantle’s name on EnergaCAMERIMAGE’s guest list, I had some instinct we should talk. Few cinematographers in my (or yours or anyone’s) lifetime have rejigged what that job means, what it might do, and how people––in direct terms or on the most subconscious levels––think about it. Just a glance at his credits is dizzying: there’s the radical approach to visual storytelling in Thomas Vinterberg’s The Celebration, a movie people still try to even approach emulating; Harmony Korine’s Julien-Donkey Boy, which almost looks like The Celebration expect for the fact that it looks like literally nothing else; there’s mainstream cinema’s major introduction to digital images in 28 Days Later, the early stage of a Danny Boyle partnership that leads to Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire; somewhere along the way he shoots two Ron Howard films that suggest the director discovered experimental cinema; and,...

“Astrid and her children decide to step out of that criminal environment. With this film, I want to show how people can be violated by something like that, how difficult it is to shake off that shame and guilt. It’s difficult, but I think it’s possible.”
He also had to learn how to speak up, he says.

There's nary a scene in "Succession" that doesn't leave me wondering: Should I be laughing, crying, or cringing, if not all three at once? Without fail, creator Jesse Armstrong's satirical examination of the One Percent manages to transition gracefully from soul-wrenching drama in one moment to something as jaw-dropping as "Boar on the Floor" in the next. Obviously, writing is a huge part of that. "Succession" boasts some of the sharpest storytelling on TV right now, yet it's very much a group effort. If the cast wasn't spot-on with their performances, Armstrong's Shakespearean tragedy by way of dark comedy wouldn't have nearly the bite it does.
"The thing for me that's most important is the harmony of the group," said Brian Cox, speaking to The Wrap in August 2022. As Logan Roy, the King Lear figure (by way of Rupert Murdoch) of "Succession," Cox seems to appreciate his peers...

Nikolaj Lie Kaas’ series “Agent,” shown at Berlinale Series, centers around Joe, who has high hopes for his famous clients. But it’s not another remake of a certain French smash.
“I started writing it before ‘Call My Agent!’ even came out. Then I saw it on Netflix and went: ‘Oh, for f**k’s sake…’,” Danish actor-turned-director tells Variety.
“I guess I was just longing for a comedy, something that would also have depth, heart and all that stuff. I said to myself: ‘Nikolaj, you are being a bitch about it. Create something yourself, instead of asking others to do it.’”
Lie Kaas, who also created the show – a Zentropa production, sold by TrustNordisk, which will be broadcast by TV2 – was recently spotted in Lars von Trier’s “The Kingdom Exodus.” Despite well-received roles in pitch-black comedies, such as Anders Thomas Jensen’s “Men and Chicken” and “Riders of Justice,...

Thomas Vinterberg is no stranger to both the formalistic and vulnerable. When this works well, like when he stormed onto the scene with The Celebration (Festen), his films have a tremendous impact. The Celebration is a gut punch of a film, about a family divided after a son delivers a rousing speech at a party that leaves all the skeletons in the family's closet open for all to see. The formalistic nature of the film, itself the first Dogme-film, where it was all shot with natural lighting on hand-held cameras (and 8 other...

TrustNordisk has snapped up international sales rights to the new Danish crime thriller “Boundless,” based on fiction guru Jussi Adler-Olsen’s “Den Grænseløse,” his sixth novel in the Department Q series.
Danish helmer Ole Christian Madsen, credited for the HBO series “Banshee” (2013-16) and WWII drama “Flame & Citron” starring Mads Mikkelsen, has taken up the challenge of bringing Adler-Olsen’s suspenseful universe to the silver screens, working from a script by Jakob Weis.
Christian Madsen will reunite with his “Banshee” actor Ulrich Thomsen. The latter reprises the role of detective Carl Mørck, which he played in Nordisk Film Production’s previous Department Q film version, “The Marco Effect”.
The helmer said he has “a profound respect for the world built in Adler-Olsen’s novels, that he finds both “intriguing and fascinating.” “I do believe ‘Boundless’ the movie could expand that world even more,” he asserted.

In the early ’90s, Francis Ford Coppola predicted the future: “Suddenly, one day some little fat girl in Ohio is gonna be the new Mozart,” he said, “and make a beautiful film with her father’s little camcorder, and for once this whole professionalism about movies will be destroyed, forever, and it will really become an art form.”
He was on the right track, but the revolution of lo-fi camerawork actually came from a couple of bored Danes. Just a few years after Coppola’s proclamation, directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg joined a few of their cohorts in scribbling out 10 rules to inform their work going forward.
The Dogme 95 Manifesto was a call-to-arms for filmmakers eager to escape the confines of commercial production and transform cinema into a fully creative endeavor. That involved a stripping away of artifice on virtually every level of production. Shot with cheap camcorders...

Jeremy Strong has been commuting this August between the New York City set of “Succession” Season 4 to Sagaponack, a village in the Hamptons where his family is staying. During a Zoom conversation with Strong, Adam McKay — the executive producer (and pilot director) of the HBO show — couldn’t help commenting that summering in the Hamptons is a very Kendall Roy thing to do.
“Is it weird driving around?” McKay asked. Breaking into a wry smile, Strong replied, “Let’s just call it research.”
Strong’s Kendall began the third season of “Succession” on top of the world. His attempted coup to seize control of Waystar Royco from Logan (Brian Cox) — the cruel father who would have sent Kendall to prison in a “blood sacrifice” to pay for the company’s sins — looked promising, if not inevitable. Yet as the season went on, Kendall’s triumph ebbed, and Logan once again shored up his power,...

It’s a well-known fact that if you are feeling nervous, especially at a social event, having a couple of drinks can easily help you to calm down. Nonetheless, if you have no self-control, you can run the risk of drinking too much, saying too much, and making a far bigger mess. Few films have captured the tumultuous and heady mix of social anxiety coupled with alcohol dependency as well as Marco Lawson’s The Dinner (Middagen), a Danish film that feels in the spirit of classic Dogme 95 cinema, bringing to mind Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round and Festen. Telling the story of a man meeting his daughter-in-law’s parents for the first time, it carefully peels back layers surrounding class, masculinity and social norms with painfully acute observation, buoyed by an oppressive atmosphere and smart set design. Impressed by this uncomfortable depiction of social anxiety, we talked to Lawson about Danish drinking culture,...

Fresh off the first-ever Netflix is a Joke comedy festival, the streamer confirmed which performances will be available to view in the coming weeks, including tributes to late comedians such as Bob Saget and Robin Williams and the yet-to-be-announced date for Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias’s groundbreaking set at Dodger Stadium.
Featuring a wide range of events and stars, the festival also made headlines for some of its comedians’ jokes, such as Pete Davidson’s digs at Kanye West. But the biggest news of the fest was when Dave Chappelle was tackled on stage during his set at the Hollywood Bowl, with the attacker being charged with four misdemeanor counts. For its part, Netflix responded by saying, “We care deeply about the safety of creators and we strongly defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform on stage without fear of violence.” Chappelle’s four sold-out shows are not included in...

Netflix said Monday it’s bringing some of the most popular shows from the 11-day “Netflix Is a Joke: The Festival” in Los Angeles to the streaming platform, including Pete Davidson riffing on Kanye West’s bizarre social media onslaught, Amy Schumer telling a joke she wasn’t allowed to do at the Oscars, Snoop Dogg mocking unruly fans and David Letterman commenting on the recent attack on Dave Chappelle.
The month-long comedy rollout begins with “The Hall: Honoring the Greats of Stand-Up,” on May 19, which has John Mulaney paying tribute to Robin Williams, Dave Chappelle on Richard Pryor, Chelsea Handler on Joan Rivers and Jon Stewart to George Carlin.

When a Trump-appointed lower court judge in Florida struck down the Biden administration’s mask mandate on Monday, celebrations broke out on flights across the country, where the mask-mandates were abruptly ended mid-flight. But in the cold open to “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” no one celebrated the news harder than Covid-19.
As always, the cold open gag kicked off with news clips setting up the premise, in this case a report that on one flight, someone blasted the song “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang on their phone when the news was announced.
So it is that the gag itself is an animated clip of Covid-19 singing its own version of “Celebration.” You can watch the clip at the bottom of the page, but immediately before that, we’ll put the lyrics.

The end is in sight for FX’s critically acclaimed drama series Snowfall. The network has renewed the series, co-created by the late John Singleton, for a sixth and final season.
The renewal comes a little more than midway through Season 5, which is pacing as the series most-watched season ever, according to Nielsen and FX, up 6 from the equivalized first six episodes of Season 4 and +55 from Season 3. Season 3 did not air next day on Hulu.

Rarely one finds a friend on the Criterion Channel—discounting the parasitic relationship we form with filmmakers, I mean—but it’s great seeing their March lineup give light to Sophy Romvari, the <bias>exceptionally talented</bias> filmmaker and curator whose work has perhaps earned comparisons to Agnès Varda and Chantal Akerman but charts its own path of history and reflection. It’s a good way to lead into an exceptionally strong month, featuring as it does numerous films by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the great Japanese documentarian Kazuo Hara, newfound cult classic Arrebato, and a number of Criterion editions.
On the last front we have The Age of Innocence, Bull Durham, A Raisin in the Sun, The Celebration, Merrily We Go to Hell, and Design for Living. There’s always something lingering on the watchlist, but it might have to wait a second longer—March is an opened floodgate.

After any awards body announces its nominations, the question at hand immediately becomes, “What’s the big takeaway here? What insight have we gleaned from this information, be it about a larger awards race or the vibe of the industry in general?” That’s the case, at least, if awards analysis is your job. Often, it’s difficult to differentiate wheat from chaff. But that’s not the case for this year’s Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award TV nominations. Not in the slightest.
Upon the announcement of this year’s nominees, it was revealed that HBO’s “Succession” had swept the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series category, garnering mentions for five distinct episodes and directors, including Kevin Bray (“Retired Janitors of Idaho”), Mark Mylod (“All the Bells Say”), Andrij Parekh (“What It Takes”), Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman (“Lion in the Meadow”), and Lorene Scafaria (“Too...

Hosoda’s (The Boy and the Beast) latest film with Studio Chizu was also his first to screen in Imax and a hit in Japan when it was released last summer.
Gkids director of distribution Chance Huskey said Belle also stands as the top grossing original anime film — meaning not affiliated with a TV franchise as most are — since 2020’s Weathering With You made $8M. Betty White’s death certificate released Monday showed the iconic actress died of a stroke that occurred six days before she died on December 31 at age 99.
The certificate, posted by TMZ, showed that White’s cause of death was a “cerebrovascular accident,” also known as a stroke, caused by blot clots and broken blood vessels that result in loss of blood flow to part of the brain, which in turn damages brain tissue. The risk is increased by several factors including older age.
TMZ cited sources saying that White had been “alert and coherent” following the stroke. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, symptoms could include dizziness, confusion, disorientation, memory loss, abnormal or slurred speech, and loss of balance and coordination.
White, who most famously starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls, died peacefully at her home in Brentwood on New Year’s Eve.

2022 is on the horizon, and rest assured: Criterion continues. Their new year starts auspiciously with a mix of old and new, first-timers and returning champ side-by-side. Worth noting off the top they’re continuing their 4K rollout with John, Paul, George, and—who else—Ringo in 2,160 pixels, A Hard Day’s Night presented in Dolby Vision Hdr and retaining supplements from Criterion’s 2014 Blu-ray.
New additions are Jane Campion’s The Piano, also in 4K; Garrett Bradley’s Time, by most consensus the greatest documentary of the last five years; Thomas Vinterberg’s The Celebration, which they have (rightly) crowned modern European cinema’s Yeezus; and Kirsten Johnson’s Dick Johnson is Dead, about which more here. The “Succession” Season 2 finale aired on HBO on Oct. 13, 2019, with the propulsive episode “This Is Not for Tears.” Logan Roy (Brian Cox), the family patriarch and CEO of Waystar Royco, has asked his erratic, striving son Kendall (Jeremy Strong) to take the fall — make a “blood sacrifice,” as Logan calls it — for the company’s cruise division, which has covered up deaths, rapes and sexual harassment. Instead, at the press conference at which Kendall is meant to fall on his sword, he implicates Logan: “This is the day his reign ends.”
More than two years later, after a long delay because of the global pandemic, the nine-episode new season of “Succession,” will premiere on Sunday. Thomas was most prominently featured on Kool & the Gang’s 1971 hit, Who’s Gonna Take the Weight. His death follows that of fellow co-founder Ronald “Khalis” Bell, who died in Sept. 2020 at age 68.
