Produced in two seasons. Gerry Anderson and AP Films were only involved with the first series. The second series were produced by Associated British Pathe for Roberta Leigh.
During the first series' production, the lower River Thames flooded, restricting access to the building where the show was filmed. Although the walls were not penetrated, crew members could only get inside via boat.
The show was narrated by Jill Freud, a former maid for C.S. Lewis's family, who inspired the character of Lucy in The Chronicles of Narnia.
Prior to international fame when they were headlining at The Cavern in Liverpool, The Beatles were known for performing the show's theme song live. In 1969, Paul McCartney briefly amused himself by launching into the song while recording the "Let It Be" album. The track has surfaced on Beatles bootlegs.
Creator Roberta Leigh published numerous tie-in books, including "Torchy and His Magic Beam," "Torchy in Topsy Turvy Land," "Torchy and Bossy Boots," "Torchy and His Two Best Friends," and "Torchy the Battery Boy Goes to a Party," as well as an annual "Torchy Gift Book" series published from 1960-64. Many of the stories in these books were short adaptations of the scripts for the show.
