THE DRAGON, THE LIZARD AND THE BOXER is a rather nondescript modern-day kung fu story made as a collaboration between the Phillipines and Hong Kong. Flash Legs Tan is the hero of the hour, forced to rescue his brother from a violent war and ending up with a bunch of refugees tagging along. Filipino Ramon Zamora and Meng Fei also come along for the ride but the trio of heroes must contend with gangsters and criminal masterminds bent on destruction. While this film deserves commendation for tackling real-world issues, so unusual in the genre - the Vietnamese boat people play a part - as a movie it's very low budget and shoddily put together. The action scenes lack oomph and the amount of star power is merely wasted in perfunctory plotting and routine fights.
