Steve Carell is heading to HBO.
The Oscar- and Emmy-nominated star of “The Office” has signed on to star in a new comedy series from creators Bill Lawrence (“Ted Lasso”) and Matt Tarses (“Scrubs”), Max announced Monday.
The untitled half-hour series, which received a 10-episode, straight-to-series order, will be set on a college campus and tell the story of an author’s complicated relationship with his daughter.
Lawrence, an Emmy winner, and Tarses, an Emmy nominee, will write the first episode and executive produce, along with Carell, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer.

Steve Carell is headed to HBO.
The former star of The Office will lead the cast of an untitled single-camera comedy from Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses (Scrubs). HBO has handed out a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes for the series, which had been the focus of a multiple-platform bidding war.
The comedy is set on a college campus and centers on an author’s complicated relationship with his daughter. Lawrence and Tarses, who previously collaborated on Scrubs and who are currently working on the Apple series Bad Monkey, will write the first episode.
“HBO has long been a standard bearer of quality TV. Getting to do a show there with Steve Carell is an immediate career highlight for Matt and me. Nothing can go wrong now,” Lawrence said.
The series hails from Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence recently renewed his overall deal. Lawrence, Tarses and Carell will exec produce the comedy.

Darren Dutchyshen, the longtime television sports anchor with Canada’s The Sports Network, has died. He was 57 years of age.
“He passed as he was surrounded by his closest loved ones. His sharp wit remained until his final moments, classically delivering plenty of jokes — most of them pretty good and all of them inappropriate,” the Dutchyshen family said in a statement on Thursday.
Tsn, where Dutchyshen had been host of its Sportscentre show since 1995, did not give an immediate word on the cause or place of death for the popular sportscaster. But Dutchyshen first announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021 on X, formerly Twitter. That forced him to sharply reduce his on-air duties at Tsn.
“Darren Dutchyshen was a legend of Canadian sports broadcasting, a great teammate and an essential part of Tsn for the last three decades,” Stewart Johnston, senior vp, sales & sports at Bell Media,...

Some celebrities have a big name that fans immediately recognize. Others have less of a reputation but just as much talent.
Josh Charles is a mildly successful actor with over forty credits in his portfolio. His career has spanned movies and TV series since the 1980s. While most of his work is lesser known, he's had a few breakthrough roles fans love.
Despite rarely being the main star, Charles has stayed relevant on screen, from his most known character in The Good Wife to his newest endeavor, FX's The Veil. Some of his earlier work should be on everyone's must-watch list.
Josh Charles started his acting career as a supporting character in the 1980s version of Hairspray. A year later, he scored his breakout role alongside Robin Williams -- one of the greatest actors of the time -- in Dead Poet's Society.

Netflix is throwing a last-minute limited series Emmy contender into the ring with “A Man in Full.” The six-episode drama series premieres May 2, the streaming service announced Wednesday.
The series stars two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels as Charlie Croker, an Atlanta real estate mogul facing sudden financial and reputational ruin who has to fend off enemies that, sensing weakness, are coming for his business empire. In a teaser accompanying the date announcement, Croker looks out over the city from a high floor of a skyscraper while he ignores an urgently ringing phone. “I heard once a man reaches a point where he’s older,” he intones in a Southern-accented voiceover. “That ain’t the tragedy. The tragedy is he refuses to recognize it.” Then another voices asks “Mr. Croker, are you ready?”

Television series don't always end on their own terms. Some of the greatest shows in the medium's history have been canceled due to low ratings before they could finish telling their overarching story or just as they were hitting their stride creatively. Some of the most egregious examples of series getting the axe before their time include "My So-Called Life," "Arrested Development," "Frank's Place," "Sports Night," "I'll Fly Away," "Deadwood," and "Mindhunters." It's possible no one has had a more brutal small-screen run than Judd Apatow, who, before he became a hit-making film producer, watched helplessly as three superb, critically acclaimed comedies — "The Ben Stiller Show," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" — failed to earn a second season.
Sometimes, fan enthusiasm results in these works getting revived in some incarnation or another, and, unfortunately, the results are often unsightly. But at least there's a reason for going back. The same isn't...

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

Robert Altman's "M*A*S*H" is an uproariously funny anti-war masterpiece on par with the Marx Brothers' "Duck Soup." Set at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War in 1951, but released to theaters in 1970, Altman's movie was unmistakably commenting on the ongoing meat grinder that was the Vietnam War. One second you're howling at the decidedly un-pc antics of Army surgeons Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), and the next you're cringing as blood spurts from the wounded soldiers they're endeavoring to save.
This sui generis classic did not feel like grist for a TV sitcom spinoff (à la "The Odd Couple" or "Please Don't Eat the Daisies"), but somehow series creator Larry Gelbart was able to strike an authentic, network-friendly balance between the rebellious behavior of Hawkeye and company, and the soul-deadening savagery of war. Courtroom movies tend to have a winning formula that appeals to our sense of justice. We never want to see innocent people sent down for crimes they didn’t commit, so a reliable story can usually be built around the process of defending unlucky characters in a court of law. But because so much of that drama transpires on a single set, making a really good courtroom movie requires certain elements to work spectacularly.
You’ll need a great, charismatic lawyer whose life, career, or reputation depends on winning the case. Then there are your defendants, who must be at least a little relatable. After all, any one of us can get mixed up in some unfortunate circumstances given the right series of events! Then there are the witnesses, who must be cajoled into telling the truth, and the opposing counsel, who is often as antagonistic as the injustice itself.

For three seasons, "The Newsroom" walked the slimmest of tightropes as an idealistic drama about the teams behind broadcast news. On the one hand, it needed to balance the hefty cynicism directed at media networks for their blatant partisanship and ivory-tower elitism (which it attempted to do by shaping news stories both behind the scenes and in front of a teleprompter). But the show also needed its characters to be convincingly altruistic without coming across as frustratingly naive or, perhaps worse, condescendingly didactic.
Finding such sweet spots in high-tension drama and humanistic optimism has long been creator Aaron Sorkin's bread and butter as both screenwriter and director -- from "A Few Good Men" and "Charlie Wilson's War" to the "Trial of the Chicago 7" and, of course, "The West Wing." He's even been known to dip out of politics to examine everything from underdog baseball teams to deeply-flawed tech giant...

When the Covid-19 pandemic first started, people suddenly had a tremendous amount of time on their hands to comb through their streaming subscriptions. This viewing manifested itself in two distinct ways. Either people retreated into the movies and television shows they have already watched countless times, or they saw this as an opportunity to watch all the stuff they had been meaning to watch for years but hadn't gotten around to. I found myself in the latter camp, and in a quest to watch something about political competency in a time when the country's leaders were anything but, I decided to watch Aaron Sorkin's "The West Wing" for the first time.
It was exactly the balm I needed. I know it's unrealistically idealistic about how government operates. I know it is a neoliberal fantasy. I know there are so many problematic things in it regarding race, gender, and religion.

Today, Academy Award-winning writer Aaron Sorkin is known for creating complex characters who steal the hearts of viewers with witty dialogue and inspiring speeches. He's the man behind Jack Nicholson's declaration, "You can't handle the truth," and Will McAvoy's assertion that "America is not the greatest country in the world anymore." These days, Sorkin's ability to entertain an audience with the everyday lives of sportscasters, news anchors, and senior White House staff is above reproach, but that wasn't the case 24 years ago.
Since 2016, the world has been keeping a very close, no-nonsense eye on the political landscape, and The White House, but not so long ago it was all considered a big joke. Aaron Sorkin's groundbreaking political drama follows President Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and his senior staff as they strive to make the world a better place during two terms in the nation's highest office. It's an idealistic — some would say naive — depiction of politics that feels like a fantasy in the divided America of today. Airing in the early days of peak TV, the network drama was unique in its verisimilitude, lack of studio interference, and inclusion of characters who looked, felt, and acted like real people.
You'd think that a show about the White House would revolve around its most famous occupant, but Potus is just one of its many compelling characters. In fact, originally, the president wasn't supposed to be on the show at all. Rather, Sorkin's intent was to follow the staffers, assistants, secretaries, and...

At the first Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in 1995, the cast of “Seinfeld” took the stage as the inaugural Best TV Comedy Ensemble recipients. The series, which starred stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld as a fictionalized version of himself, was one of several shows about the entertainment industry nominated for the group prize that year, with “Frasier” and “Murphy Brown” having been respectively centered on the radio and news media subsectors. Over the last quarter century, the casts of many other comedies about show business have competed and sometimes won here, and now the stars of “Hacks” are hoping to make good on their second try.
Like “Seinfeld,” “Hacks” is centered on the stand-up comedy profession, but the similarities end there. The HBO Max show’s main character is septuagenarian female comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), who is entirely fictional and primarily performs in the American West, as opposed to New York.

Everything old is new again, or at least worthy of deeper exploration. Consider two of this year’s biggest awards contenders, one at the Oscars and the other at the Emmys, thanks to a pair of backward-looking examinations of some of pop culture’s biggest modern obsessions: The Beatles and “I Love Lucy.” On the surface, “The Beatles: Get Back,” Peter Jackson’s six-hour saga of bedraggled young Beatles on deadline in 1969, and “Being the Ricardos,” Aaron Sorkin’s take on the comic mastermind Lucille Ball as she works in the mid-1950s alongside her great enabler Desi Arnaz might not sound simpatico, but both offer compelling explorations of creation.
The first is a 2022 documentary Emmy contender, while the second has given three Oscar winners a second shot at a gold statue. Almost as a reward for taking on the role of a wildly gifted comedienne, Nicole Kidman also scored a Golden Globe Drama win,...

Taking place over the course of one chaotic week during the production of sitcom staple I Love Lucy, Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos spins more plates than it could possibly hope to handle. Its two core ideas are thus: at the same time that Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) is publicly accused of being a communist, a gossip rag has published a cover story proclaiming her husband Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem) is sleeping around. Both accusations are denied. Both threaten to derail the professional and personal lives of the couple if they prove to be true, or if they breach further into the public consciousness. With tensions high, the show must go on.

Over the decades, Aaron Sorkin has written numerous incredible TV series and films. TV series like “Sports Night,” “The West Wing,” and “The Newsroom,” along with films such as “Moneyball,” “Steve Jobs,” and last year’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” But if you were to ask a film fan what project they think deserves a sequel, it’s quite likely “The Social Network,” Sorkin’s collaboration with filmmaker David Fincher.

“I wanted it to feel real. I didn’t feel like the comedy was coming from a parody of a football team,” reveals production designer Paul Cripps about the cinematic and realistic quality of the sets designed for “Ted Lasso.” He calls it “this strange beast in that it has this extra element in its heart. It’s not just a work-based comedy, it’s really about character. So I felt that the environment had to feel real and you had to buy-in to the belief of that.”

Jon Bernthal, Josh Charles, and Jamie Hector are set for three of the lead roles in the HBO limited series “We Own This City” from the team behind “The Wire.”
In addition to the castings, Reinaldo Marcus Green has joined the series as director and executive producer. Variety reported that the series was set up at the premium cabler back in March.
Based on the book of the same name by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton, “We Own This City” is a six-hour limited series chronicling the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force — and the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.

If The Trial of the Chicago 7 wins the SAG Award for Best Ensemble, it would mark a precedent-setting third time that Michael Keaton has been in the winners circle, previously in eventual Best Picture winners Spotlight and Birdman. Deadline caught up with an actor willing to share the spotlight, hang onto certain things — a Batman reprise in The Flash — and try his first TV series for Hulu, in Dopesick, a drama about the insidious rise of addictive prescription Opioid pain killers. In The Trial of the Chicago 7, Keaton’s turn as former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark is pivotal in showing just how desperate the U.S. government and a federal judge wanted to imprison protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. They disregarded Clark’s testimony about his investigation that would have upended the entire trial by pointing the finger at authorities for inciting a riot. Keaton...

Both initially signed for one-episode guest shots, which have already aired. Both were received well and ultimately turned into sizeable guest arcs.
Malina recurs as Arthur Trilling on the eleventh and final season of Shameless. Arthur is a longtime Chicago cop who stays safe on the job by refusing to leave his squad car. Then he is assigned Carl Gallagher as his junior partner and that changed everything.
Starring William H. Macy, the final season of Shameless finds the Gallagher family and the South Side at a crossroads, with changes caused by the Covid pandemic, gentrification and aging to reconcile.

Jamie Tarses, the TV executive and producer who was the first woman to head a Big Three network entertainment division, was remembered Monday by former colleagues and television executives as a gifted, whip-smart “force of nature” who forged a path for others in a male-dominated industry.
Tarses died Monday at the age of 56. Her passing shocked the industry as she came up the ranks and remained a respected figure among the generation of industry executives who came up in the 1990s.
Tarses is credited with helping to pave the way for other women at the top of TV. Walt Disney Television chairman Dana Walden and 20th Television president Karey Burke both hailed Tarses as a mentor. Tarses “shattered stereotypes and ideas about what a female executive could achieve, and paved the way for others, at a cost to herself,” said Burke.

It’s hard to believe now, but it took until 1996 for the broadcast networks to finally hire their first-ever female entertainment president, when ABC recruited Jamie Tarses away from NBC to take the job. There had been a handful of other women in powerful slots, including Lucie Salhany, who was briefly chair of the Fox Broadcasting Co. before launching Upn. But until streaming upended the business, “entertainment president” was the most visible, and arguably the most important, leadership job at a network. And until Tarses, it had been all men.
Tarses’ rise at ABC coincided with the start of my career as a cub reporter, covering the network TV business in Los Angeles, and one of my first duties was to chronicle the tenure of the young trailblazer. Jamie Tarses, one of the most dynamic television executives of her era who helped build NBC’s Must-See TV lineup and went on to become the first woman to lead a Big Three network programming division, died Monday following complications from a cardiac event last fall, according to Tarses’ family. She was 56.
Tarses was born into the industry as the daughter of famed comedy writer-producer Jay Tarses. As a network executive, she made a big splash at NBC in the early 1990s, developing “Friends” and “Mad About You.” She made headlines when she moved over to ABC Entertainment as president during a turbulent era for the network and then-new parent company, Disney.

Jamie Tarses, who broke the glass ceiling for female TV executives as the first woman to run a network entertainment division, passed away this morning from complications stemming from a cardiac event she suffered last fall, according to her family. She was 56.
A superstar TV executive, Tarses was instrumental in developing such iconic shows as NBC’s Friends and Frasier and reached the pinnacle of the network programming executive ladder by age 32, becoming president of ABC Entertainment. Young and phenomenally successful, Tarses transcended the media business to become a bona fide celebrity who was both admired and scrutinized. The enormous pressure of the job and relentless media attention took a toll on her tenure, which Tarses followed with a successful second career as a TV producer of such popular shows as ABC’s Happy Endings, TBS’ My Boys, TNT’s Franklin & Bash and Amazon Prime Video’s The Wilds.

CBS Television Studios, Rideback and Thinking Hat are reteaming on a second year of the Rideback/Thinking Hat Campfire writers room, which in its inaugural year developed and sold two projects to CBS. Voting for Emmy nominations ended on Monday, July 13, and I’m nothing if not the patron saint of the overlooked; you can still find me lamenting the longtime snubs of shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Gilmore Girls” and “The Wire.” This year there are a number of programs I love that are at risk of falling through the cracks (and in some cases not for the first time). I’m praying that some of them surprise us on July 28 when nominations are finally announced. Here are the top eight dark horse contenders I’m holding out hope for.

I have been very fortunate over the years to work for people who I consider to be excellent bosses – people I’ve learned from and who have helped me grow. Bosses can be some of the most nurturing individuals, but there are a few who can go over the top. Throughout the history of television, there have been all kinds of bosses, ranging from business owners on sitcoms, to leaders of government agencies, to ruthless CEOs. And they have provided some of the most iconic, award-winning performances in the history of the medium.
