An interesting antique, difficult to judge fairly based on existing print.

Zamboanga is one of the sixth largest cities in the Philippines, but obviously it's gone through a major overhaul in the past 84 years. This forgotten romantic adventure is no different than many other films made during that time, but this is actually film where it takes place rather than on some studio backlot. It's the typical story of boy loves girl and wants to marry her, but she is coveted by a more powerful man who takes it upon himself to claim her. That's the shell of the story which unfolds over an hour, as a good portion of the film shows the various traditions of this prior to building itself up.

Apparently this was a lost film but has been found and restored with that located in the Philippines. The print I located is unfortunately grainy and suffers from very bad sound recording. Some sections have English dialog (as well as narration) and other scenes are in the native language. It's worth searching out for the anthropological aspects of a developing civilization long before that happened, and the two young lovers are certainly attractive and devoted to each other. But it's a very dated point of view of the island people before civilization was put upon them and it doesn't help that it's difficult to make out some of the traditions they are utilizing here.
