According to an article in Le Figaro newspaper, Cécile Aubry found the right pony in the department of L'Yonne, bought the five-year-old horse, and took it to her home in the village of Saint-Cyr-sous-Dourdan. Children from the local school were recruited to play in the series, as the opening credits show, just like the teacher, painter, baker and carpenter from the village. The crew consisted of just Aubry, a cameraman and a script girl. There was no sound recordist, as it was decided that all the parts would be dubbed in the studio by professional actors.
Le Figaro newspaper also reported that, as Cécile Aubry watched her son Mehdi El Glaoui being completely mesmerized by a traveling circus, she came up with the idea for the story, and decided to cast the four-year-old boy in the lead role. It would be the first of five TV series written and directed by Aubry, starring her young son.
