Director Robert Kaylor and producer William Richert originally intended to make a more simple and straightforward documentary about the sport of roller derby. Kaylor and Richert decided to switch gears and focus more on factory worker Mick Snell's pursuit of his dream of becoming a professional roller derby player after Snell walked into a locker room during an interview with roller derby champion Charlie O'Connell to ask O'Connell pointers on how to successfully achieve his goal.
This film was originally released with an R rating, but was eventually recut by the distributor to secure a PG rating so it could be booked in more theaters. The director's original R-rated cut was released on DVD by Code Red in 2009.
