- 'Karolina Rijecka' (qv.) [Karolina of Rijeka] is semi-historical and was based on the events of 1813. When the English fleet begins firing cannons on the Adriatic port town of Rijeka, young Karolina Belinic (Anne Aubrey) goes to the ship of the English Admiral (Barry Jones) to negotiate a cease-fire and prevent the destruction of the town.
Based on the history of Rijeka, Karolina was known for her loveliness and her charm; and, at the time of the events depicted in the movie, she was a married woman with three children.
The primary story of Karolina's bravely venturing out to board the ship of the English Admiral to negotiate the preservation of Rijeka was given very little screen time. The secondary story that was woven through most of the movie, is a romantic tale in which Karolina, and her escort, Mr. George (David McCallum), an officer from the Admiral's ship, become enamored. While the romance is probably historically inaccurate, it does make the movie interesting.
