There's a good reason why Supernatural has earned the loyalty of this fan over 12 long seasons. And here it is...
At the time I began watching fantasy horror series Supernatural in 2005, I was a sprightly 24 year old. Today, I am a less-than-sprightly 35 year old. Before the twelfth season of Supernatural began earlier this year, there had been 241 episodes across eleven years, and I’ve seen every single one of them. Assuming each episode runs for approximately 42 minutes, that’s 10,122 minutes. Which equates to over 168 hours, or just over seven days.
See related Shane Black: a career retrospective Zack Snyder interview: Batman V Superman
Supernatural is currently in its twelfth year, meaning there are at least another 23 episodes to come, and very likely more after that.
Seven days of my life. And counting.
And the strangest thing of all is that, for me, Supernatural is… well, it’s okay.

The road so far …
It wasn’t exactly easy for genre television in 2005. Well, it’s really never been easy for genre television ever in the history of television, but in 2005, a deluge of genre shows premiered and almost all of them had fallen prey to the swift axe of the television gods by the next year. Start by thinking about television now. It’s a fruitful time for horror and science fiction and fantasy. There are a multitude of genre shows, running the gamut from The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, to True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. They’re all massive hits.
Now, think of all of the shows that premiered around that time in 2005. There was Surface, and that was cancelled after ten episodes by NBC. Invasion, a well-regarded show written by Shaun Cassidy (who created one of my favorite shows, American Gothic) and that was cancelled...

Supernatural Review, Season 7, Episode 23: “Survival of the Fittest”
Written by Sera Gamble
Directed by Robert Singer
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on Supernatural: Cas collects honey, the guys go nun shopping, and the Impala makes an impression
After several weeks of solid, interesting episodes, episodes that seemed to be moving various pieces into precise positions, Supernatural looked to be set up for a strong, entertaining finale. As it begins, fans’ excitement will grow as the well edited recap skips through the season’s highlights, of course set to “Carry On Wayward Son”, as the season finale recaps have all been since season two.** Unfortunately, by the time the finale ends, though many will undoubtedly enjoy it, the more scrutinizing will be disappointed at the wasted potential and sheer messiness of not only this episode, but the major arcs of the final third of the season as well.

Yesterday, Jensen Ackles gave me what I thought was a little tease about the season finale of Supernatural while on the red carpet at the CW Upfronts. (Yes, that was a humblebrag.) I shared it with y’all in Spoiler Room this afternoon. To recap, he said: “In previous season, Dean found himself in hell and we had to figure out how he was going to get back from hell next season. This is something like that. It’s going to be interesting how we get back from that.”
Well, I can say a lot of wonderful things about that guy — and I have.

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 7, Episode 23 of The CW's "Supernatural," entitled "Survival of the Fittest."
Reviewing a season finale is very different from reviewing a singular episode, and "Supernatural" finales are more challenging than most. The end of a season has to tie up loose story threads from the entire season preceding it, while still leaving enough dangling to create a compelling jumping off point for next year. Thankfully, despite a few (okay, more than a few) lackluster episodes this season, I think that the season finale managed to course-correct in a way that makes me truly optimistic for Season 8. The last couple of episodes didn't build up much momentum going into the finale, in comparison with the stellar runs at the end of Seasons 1, 2, 4 and 5, but a finale still needs to stand on its own merits, and against the odds, I felt like...

Supernatural Renewed for Season 8 by The CW
The CW has officially renewed Supernatural for an eighth season, the network announced today in an email. Originally premiering on The WB network in 2005, Supernatural became a cult favorite and gained a fast group of devoted fans. While many shows can suffer from fan fatigue in later years, the Supernatural fandom keeps going strong. In its seventh season, the show's fans voted Supernatural the People's Choice Best Drama Series and Best Sci-Fi Series.
Supernatural moved to Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. Et in its sixth season, originally being re-paired with Smallville when that series was still on the air. This season, it's lead-in has been Nikita. While the show's ratings have, admittedly, declined year over year, The CW seems to be satisfied with its performance on Friday nights and has decided to give it another year. Supernatural Jib Convention: Jared, Jensen, Sebastian, Misha's Resume, Richard & More (Photos)
Day 3 of the Supernatural Jib convention turned out to be a different kind of day. While the entire convention was amusing, today seemed more about the actors letting loose and acting hilarious. Day 1 and day 2 gave us a lot of good answers to questions about the show and day 3 gave us the Misha resume story (more on that soon).
All of the Supernatural boys were in fine form. Putting Richard Speight, Jr., Sebastian Roché and Mark Pellegino together in a panel was a genius move, because what resulted was a nearly incomprehensible 40 minutes of hilarity. It was impossible to transcribe, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
Pranks
Jared did mention a recent prank that Jensen had played on him that he didn't mention yesterday. He said that during the episode Jensen was directing in season 7, Jared had a scene where...

Supernatural Jib Convention: Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, Jim Beaver & More
It's day 2 of the Supernatural Jus in Bello convention in Rome and the lead actors of the show - Jensen Ackles (Dean) and Jared Padalecki (Sam) - took to the stage, together and individually. If you missed our report from day 1, click here.
With the two lead actors, as well as Jim Beaver (Bobby) and Misha Collins (Castiel), speaking today, we got a lot of opinions on Supernatural, from arcs that happened in earlier seasons to season 7. Bear with me, because we have a lot of information to get through.
Bobby and His Death
Jim Beaver, of course, had this reaction when he was told about Bobby's death this season: "I didn’t like it. But everybody dies...I was just hoping it would be around season 15. I wasn’t nuts about the storyline, but I knew it was good drama.

A rabid fight breaks out as they all attack each other and she watches. Dean (Jensen Ackles) prepares bullets containing ash: enough for 5 shells. Bobby (Jim Beaver) comments the lore states ash should work and it doesn't do anything to Dean... trust him to try it, well he's human so it wouldn't affect him. Dean tells Cas (Misha Collins) to "get out of my ass." Cas: "I was never in your..." Eve is hidden from angels. Sam (Jared Padalecki) believes a vampire could help. Cas brings Lenore (Amber Benson) to them. Last seen in season 2, she was just brought in to be finished off like a loose end. When "Supernatural" returns tonight (March 16) after a brief hiatus, Sam's hallucinations are beginning to get the best of him. As Jared Padalecki told us when we chatted with him in La early this year, with Lucifer invading his mind, Sam isn't sleeping, and he's experiencing all the human side effects of sleep deprivation.
We've seen brief glimpses of Sam on a gurney in an institution. Back in La, Jared told us that he wanted the effects to resonate for a while. When we caught up with him in Vancouver a few weeks later, he told us that he wasn't sure just how long Sam would be incapacitated. Episode 17, where Sam is institutionalized (also the episode in which Misha Collins returns as Castiel) gave Jared so much to work on that he didn't even want to read the Episode 18 until 17 was behind him.

Cas (Misha Collins) does his 'thing' again on Sam (Jared Padalecki) i.e. puts his hand inside of him. Sam's soul is in place but he probably won't wake up. Dean (Jensen Ackles) once again asks what he was meant to do. Cas felt his soul and it was "like it had been skinned alive." That's how angels and Lucifer get their kicks, so much for them being angels. If Dean wanted to kill Sam he should just do it. Why is Cas suddenly so concerned for Sam? Bobby (Jim Beaver) is sure Sam will be okay, he always bounces back. Bobby tells about Stan whose body was found away from the plane, but Penny wasn't found. Sam wakes and recalls events form the season 5 finale.

Since my colleague Mo Ryan decided to step back from recapping Supernatural, I'll be pulling double duty between this and its Friday-night companion, Nikita -- at least until sleep deprivation gets the better of me.
The episode before mid-season hiatus ended with one hell of a cliffhanger, leaving our beloved Bobby holding on to life by a thread, with an irritatingly persistent reaper offering him two equally unappealing choices: pass on, or hang around to eventually become an angry spirit, the likes of which he's spent his life hunting.
The show deliberately avoided revealing which option he chose, opening instead with Sam and Dean in the weeks following their father-figure's death. We don't know whether Bobby was buried or cremated, or whether he's potentially brain-dead but being kept alive by machines following his last flat-line, and that ambiguity obviously leaves room for Bobby's return, either in ghost or comatose form,...

Dean (Jensen Ackles) wakes next to Lisa (Cindy Sampson) as we get a series of scenarios involving Dean as his life used to be and what he does now, so much of it is pretty much the same, aside from the hunting element - such as salting food, whereas before he would salt whilst hunting, tools in his car and tools used for his job, contrasting his job as hunter and now as a family man, sharing beers with Sam (Jared Padalecki) in the past and now with a neighbour, working on the car with Sam and now with Ben (Nicholas Elia). Dean checks the house with rosary in hand and water and keeps a gun under the bed. Dean has a drink with Sid (Russel Porter). It's been a year without Sam. Dean "lived on the road" and had a job in pest control. Dean is almost respectable now.

Supernatural- Through “Death’s Door”
I took some much-needed time to decipher exactly how I felt about “Death’s Door” and how it will affect the rest of Supernatural’s seventh season going forward. It would have been irresponsible to throw myself into writing about an episode as potentially game changing as this one without having a full grasp on it. Furthermore, it would have been disrespectful to the memory of Bobby Singer; perhaps the most well loved character on Supernatural. He deserved a time of mourning. He will be fondly remembered and terribly missed.
I have been rather critical of this season thus far. There’s been way too much angst and not enough fast burning plots. The character development (sure let’s call it that) for Sam and Dean has been a mish mash of recycled material acting as a placeholder while the writers figured out what...

This week, on Supernatural: Sam gets married and Crowley pays a visit
Supernatural this week is a bit of an odd one. It’s not the laugh riot implied by its title, it’s not particularly spooky, gory, or surprising, and, in the end, it’s not that memorable. The one sentence recap above pretty much sums up what most fans will take away from this episode; not much happens, and what does doesn’t happen in an interesting way. Usually episodes featuring this much filler become frustrating, but for some reason this isn’t the case with “Season 7…”. Even its missed opportunities don’t prompt a strong reaction. Overall, it’s a diverting, light piece of entertainment that will...

What a super, awesome, fun, amusing, gross and sad episode of Supernatural this week. After Don Stark managed to subdue the leviathan last week, the boys took him back to the cabin so Bobby could figure out how to hurt and/or kill these suckers. The poor man wasn’t having any luck with all of the usual tools, although decapitation seemed to do the trick for a while.
Meanwhile, two other leviathans had cloned themselves into the Winchester brothers (using hair from a motel bathroom) and decided to take their shiny new bodies on a killing spree. They robbed banks and left a trail of dead people in their wake. When Sam and Dean finally got wind of what their dopplegangers were up to, Bobby sent them to an old acquaintance by the name of Frank Devereaux. The cast of Supernatural took over the enormous Hall H at Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego Sunday and teased a season that will find the brothers Winchester “less powerful” than ever and possibly outer space bound. Of course, would you expect anything less from the show?
Here are some highlights from the panel and the press room:
- The first episode picks up seconds after the season ended and Jim Beaver says the season is “scarier” than usual in some ways. “There’s a certain sense of futility that’s come over us in the first episode,” Beaver told press. “We...

This episode was heavily focused on Castiel, obviously. And can I just join the chorus of "Finally" which I'm sure the Supernatural fans have been collectively chanting? I mean honestly, Cas has been insanely underrepresented all year, and considering all the fuss about making him a regular, it's so ironic that Jim Beaver has been so much more heavily featured. I understand the absence of Castiel was partially because Misha Collins became a father and understandably needed time off, but at the same time, where's he Been all year? It's been a weird, awkward absence and I was really excited for this episode to give us all the answers. And along with a weirdly high number of references to fish, I think it absolutely delivered. There was so much to get into, so this recap is kinda-sorta really long, but I hope you enjoy my analysis.

Fair Warning #1 - If you know me, you know I hate meta episodes. Don't get me wrong. I love meta. Changing Channels was awesome and little winks like in Caged Heat when Crowley said, "Castiel, haven't seen you all season" make my day. I just can't stand meta for meta's sake and the refuse it makes canon in its wake. To me, only The Monster at the End of the Book and The Real Ghostbusters were meta episodes, both of which make my Top 10 Worst Episodes list. I've dreaded this episode. However, Unforgiven and Mannequin 3 were both subpar episodes to me, equally boring and equally filler. So, tired of writing negatively about Supernatural for 2 weeks, I decided not to recap this one. Until I saw it. Unlike many, it is not my favorite episode of season 6, not even close. But, it would land squarely in the middle for me. Some...

If it seems like the strained relationship between the Winchester brothers on "Supernatural" is improving, don't get too comfortable. Despite the old-school "beers on the hood of the Impala" scene in the most recent episode, all is not well between Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles).
Read no further if you don't want to know the details!
In the upcoming episode "Caged Heat," Sam, Dean, and Castiel (Misha Collins) team up with Meg (Rachel Miner) to try to get Sam's soul back from Crowley. Spoiler alert: it doesn't work.
Dean doesn't want to give up, though -- and he's about to make a deal with someone much more powerful, and more dangerous, than Meg. In "Appointment in Samarra," Dean goes looking for one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse: Death himself, who met Dean at a pizza joint last season to help him conquer Lucifer. Death (returning guest...

Previously - it was all about Sam (Sam's appearance meant Lisa's end, Sam has no soul, Cas can't get Sam's soul back, Sam has no instinct, Sam isn't Dean's brother anymore, Sam doesn't care)
Two kids are making out in a cornfield and you know this ends badly. Haven't they seen Children of the Corn? Go park by an abandoned barn or the creek like everyone else. SuperJock sees something and goes into the corn to "have a quick look". This reminds me of Asylum when Dean said, "You seen a lot of horror movies, yeah?...Do me a favor, next time you see one, pay attention. When someone says a place is haunted, don't go in." Same thing applies to exploring cornfields, SuperJock. I thought Blondie was the smarter of the two, but she follows SuperJock in, because you know that always ends well. In a flash of light,...

Previously: Dean worried, Lisa was awesome, Dean vamped and killed, Sam smiled (yep, still as creepy as last week), Ben got pushed, Dean drank and vomited Kool-Aid, and Dean knew Sam lied.
At Big Gerson's Home of Terrible Ties, Plain Jane, or Average Pathetic Girl (Apg), emos into her phone. She whines for truth and the previews show that doesn't end well. People give her the unvarnished truth. Titanic's Old Rose killed a homeless man and freaky girl needs a psychiatrist stat. Pretty specific fantasy kid. Apparently Big Gerson gives the key to the gun drawer to anyone so after her sister tells her to kill herself, she does. (Side note - until the sister went to name calling and said to kill herself I was fine with the tough love. I am so glad no one hit me with a truth spell.) Apg blows her brains out and Gerson needs to change his slogan,...

The two Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles), give new meaning to the concept of "road trip." Driving Dean's trademark black Impala, they continue the "family business" of pursuing supernatural bad guys across the country.
In season five, the two brothers and one fallen angel battle hell on earth in the form of Satan himself and his army. The apocalypse is coming, Earth is the battlefield, and all of humanity will suffer the wrath of Lucifer. Dean and Sam battle the four horsemen, demons and angels as they confront the reality that each of them has a terrible role to play in an unraveling plot that was written ages ago.
Other fifth series castmembers include Jim Beaver, Samantha Ferris, Alona Tal, Misha Collins, Kurt Fuller, and Mark Pellegrino.

It's become a Dread Central tradition to close out our Comic-Con work week with the "Supernatural" panel. Few sessions are as funny, informative, and entertaining year after year. And 2010 was no exception. All the tidbits and mini-spoilers Kripke and crew revealed can be found here, along with a description of the clip that was shown from Episode 4 of the upcoming Season 6, "Weekend at Bobby's", directed by Jensen Ackles.
Instead of making the audience wait until the end of the panel for the really good stuff, "Supernatural" always starts things off with video, in this case the aforesaid "Weekend at Bobby's" sneak peek, which Ackles introduced. Even though it's not the season opener, they shot it first to give him time for prep and so he can then return to straight acting throughout the rest of the episodes. Here's the description of a scene between Bobby Singer and the demon/angel Crowley,...

Supernatural (TV) will end its fifth season on May 13 with "Swan Song," which promises the ultimate showdown between good and evil, with Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) surely caught in the middle of it all. But official word is that a "beloved character" will perish in the hour. Could that be Castiel (Misha Collins)? Might it be the brothers' hot wheels, their 1967 Chevy Impala? Or maybe it's Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver), the boys' ally, father figure and friend, who's doomed to perish? During a recent exclusive interview, Beaver -- a veteran character actor, playwright, and screenwriter whom audiences will also remember as Ellsworth on Deadwood (TV) -- slyly refused to tip his hand about Bobby's fate. You came on Supernatural (TV) near the end of season one. How surprised -- or not -- are you that both the show and Bobby have stuck around so long? I'm not surprised.

I love Supernatural. Tacked to the wall of my cubicle is a picture of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki staring at me through the windows of the Impala. And I have been fighting depression throughout hell-atus like everyone else. That said, "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" was, in one (not Webster-recognized) word, meh. First, my top three gripes (because this isn't the American Idol judging panel so I don't have to start on a positive note): 1. Are you there, main plot? It's me, Sandra Supernatural was on hiatus for more than a month and a little mention from a...

The chief of the four horsemen, the pale rider Death, finally galloped into town last night on Supernatural. You can be sure with the season winding down and the apocalypse on the way that Hell is surely following with him.
While some other notable genre shows are taking their sweet time stirring up Armageddon, the Winchester boys continue to race their Impala full-tilt right down to the gates of perdition. All season there has been a war brewing, but amidst the chaos the show is as funny, compelling and poignant as ever.
There weren’t necessarily many chuckles in this outing (go back to ‘My Bloody Valentine’ if dark humor is what you are after) but it did deliver some of the most emotionally intense moments of the season. In recent memory, we have watched Sam and Dean struggle against their fates and natures as the forces of darkness strive...

.Supernatural. fans are in for quite a ride as the popular series kicks off its fourth season Sept. 18. Actor Jim Beaver, who plays Bobby Singer, said viewers should brace themselves for even more of the unexpected. In an exclusive interview with Rabid Doll, Beaver said fans can count on .twists that folks aren.t going to be expecting at all.. Although Beaver wouldn.t elaborate too much on this season.s plotlines, he did spill the beans on one surprise that even caught him off guard. .I get to drive the Impala,. he said. .I was shocked when I saw that scene coming up!. Beaver said there.s no doubt Dean, played by Jensen Ackles, will be upset, but he.s certain forgiveness will be forthcoming. .I think Dean will forgive Bobby, because it was in the process of saving Dean.s life.
