Overthinking?

In Adult movies, Raven Touchstone is among my favorite screenwriters, and she brings lots of quirky creativity to the script of "Behind Blue Eyes", a tongue-in-cheek fantasy comedy. Perhaps too much.

The theme is a frequent porn concept: a movie about creating a porn movie. Only this time it is not about shooting porn but rather concerns writer Eric Edwards and director Rick Savage tossing back and forth script ideas while dining in a restaurant. They use people sitting at other tables for inspiration in creating characters, and then hash out situations to put them into for developing a college sex comedy set at a sorority house.

The fun aspect here is that of a puppetmaster: Eric & Rick manipulate their invented characters and we see the people at the restaurant acting out the fictional scenes. Touchstone toys with the fantasy versus reality concept in extreme fashion, so by the end of the movie the real people seem like prisoners being actually manipulated by this pair of fanciful pornographers.

The scenes they concoct are intentiionally porn cliches, but the layers of unreality pump new life into them. Cast is not very impressive, though Krista Lane is sexy (undressed) as usual. Jamie Gillis offers some comedy relief as the horny university dean.

Scotty Fox's anything goes direction keeps the audience on its toes, but in the end the filmmakers appear more self-amused by their twisty antics than a casual viewer might be, as Raven's writing necessitates careful attention.
