Terrifyingly brilliant!
breacain26 September 2005
Every female should see this movie to get an outsider's view of how some of us can sabotage ourselves so completely. Maybe it should be required viewing in junior high, and then again in college? Maybe men should see it too, just to understand this particular brand of psychosis.

Difficult to watch, but really smart.

If you think you hate men, think dating sucks, and wonder why men only seem to want to date "Barbie types," maybe this is for you. Especially if you fancy yourself smart and cool and wonder why no man appreciates that. The character Heather is played brilliantly and realistically as the girl who gets it all wrong.

Surprise! It's not your big butt keeping men away, it's your attitude! So brush your hair, get out of your sweatpants and enjoy the day!

a romantic tragedy/comedy with an almost 'Blair With' edge
Quinoa19849 October 2005
Chi Girl reminded me of the Blair Witch Project for a couple of reasons, however in a slightly different ballpark. While Blair Witch is a more 'accessible' film to the audience (via young people terrified in the woods), the idea is similar: if you didn't think that someone had written and directed this film, and that most of the people in the film are actors or non-professionals, you might take it as being for real. On that level, Chi Girl gets it right. Even when the film has a little too much cynicism and, perhaps, nihilism, it's interesting, and doesn't lose interest despite (like Blair Witch) it's "no-budget" atmosphere and stylistics. I didn't know it until I looked up the credits after seeing the film (while not available on video or DVD, by the way, it is shown sometimes on IFC) that the film was written/co-directed by the "star" (Heidi Van Lier), which adds a little more fascination; in a way it seems about right. But on that level, it becomes a more psychologically complex film, as she not only delves into her character's psyche, but for the one holding the camera as well.

Heather is a basket case (even her good friends call her this), who writes a column for a Chicago paper, but has little to no luck on the social scene. Randy (the narrator, with a monotone voice reminiscent of the character Cornfed from the TV show Duckman) follows her with his seemingly objective camera, as she tries to show she can pick up any guy in the night-time bar scene. Eventually she does, with disastrous results, which then brings on the kind of downward spiral that is comparable to Travis Bickle (pre Mohawk of course). One of the great things about the style of the film (from DP Anders Uhl) is when she is in the bar trying to pick up guys, the camera is always in long-view, through the windows, peeking through. This could be tiresome, but somehow it's kept fresh in all these cringe-inducing scenes and dialogs. Does this objective, documentary style become subjective at some point? Hard to say.

But what does come through well, even during some of the shaky camera moves and dour moments, is this honest look at obsessive personality, and that this experimental style also calls into question the form of the observer. This is what reality TV doesn't understand, that real life is more like this, with people who are desperate, and disparate. It definitely thrives more on character than plot, so it may not be for you. For some, on the other hand, it could stike a spark.

A brief description of a great movie
Clerkfan28 March 1999
In the grand tradition of Zelig and Man Bites Dog, Chi Girl is an innovative mockumentary, turning the genre on its head by focusing not only on the subject, Heather, but the narrator and their psychotic tendencies.

Like and Hate

Warning: Spoilers
This movie ANGERED ME. So for me to get that into it with emotions must mean the movie was pretty good. Heather was such a fool! She irritated me to points unknown, but there are females like her. Females who have never been in relationships, who can't get men, but claim to be the authority figures on what men want from women.

She went from pathetic to desperate. Then from desperate she became the figure for most chunky women who don't groom themselves but want someone to be attracted to them. Cliff, the man filming, went from a snob to being more pathetic than she was. I kept screaming at the television wanting her or someone to call the cops, break his camera, do something other than just entertain his questions.

I thought I didn't like the movie at first, but I was wrong. I truly did enjoy it. If a movie can make you react to the ridiculousness of its characters, it's a good film.

Love this flick

Well done. Loved it. Saw it on a Saturday morning just waking up. Bravo!!! As in the fashion of Blair Witch it captures all the realisms of life. I was made to believe this movie was authentic and REAL. Not since 'Clerks' has a film maker captured such brilliance. Hats off to the director and writers of this film. Nice!! I have always wanted to write & direct but till I have seen this now I know this is what I want to do. You made her such a nut case it's so surreal. Maybe one day I wish I can do such an outstanding job as she has done. Only if Hollywood could back such features as this. Only if... ~Peace Love Empathy~ KornFreak!!
