Cool Racer

This is another racing game I like, yeah, it's not one of the best in the racing game genre in my book. But it's one of the only good ones for the Nes system. This game was a hit for its time as there really weren't many racing games or at least good ones for the Nes, heck it was featured in the film "The Wizard" (one of my favorite movies) played by the character Lucas; too bad I never got to play against the guy from how he plays it I could actually make him eat my exhaust fumes.

Not much to say about this one, this game was sort of the Nes system's answer to "Out Run". Yeah, this game is not as good as "Out Run" which for the record is one of my favorite video games of all time as well as a story for another time. But this game has it were it counts in both it's presentation and most importantly gameplay.

The graphical presentation is good nothing amazing in my book but good enough. I really like how it really gives that illusion of top speed as you are just seeing your environment from the left and right just whizzing by you.

Even like the backgrounds like the canyons and city which really give you sense of geography, but what I really like is how in some levels like the first level there is that sense of time as you see the environment quickly change from day, afternoon, and night which I thought was cool really made you feel like you gone so far, so fast, in so much time.

I really like the designs of the two racers you get to ride. One is the white traditional racing car model. But my favorite is the red Ferrari, which is my favorite car of all time, which is the reason I pick that one the most. It was so cool to just ride that baby in this game, sometimes when playing the game I pretend I'm Thomas Magnum from "Magnum P.I." as this was his signature car and I'm in some sort of high speed chase.

Really like the sounds the cars make from just the sound of the engine, speed, and breaks really makes you feel your driving a race car and just running at top speed on the pavement.

The difficulty is on the medium side, it's not to hard but not too easy. This is a game about speed and distance as you have a limited amount of time to get to the checkpoints so you can continue to race to the finish. There are of course plenty of cars in your way to pass by but as you get further in the game the cars move differently making the next race a little tricky to get though.

Rad Racer is a vintage racer up to speed.
