I Was a Man (1967)
* (out of 4)
Ansa Kansas plays himself, a man living as a hermaphrodite who decides during his mid-life that he wants to become a woman. The film follows him as he travels to Finland for a sex change.
This Barry Mahon film was released after Ed Wood's GLEN OR GLENDA? and before Doris Wishman's LET ME DIE A WOMAN. I'm not sure if there's a worse triple feature that one could watch but all three movies are quite awful but at the same time fascinating in their own right. Out of the three I'd argue that this one here is the weakest and least entertaining of the bunch because, well, there's no Bela Lugosi and the film is pretty bland and especially when compared to the Wishman film.
Looking at this film on its own merits, there's really not too much here sadly. I say that because the story is pretty boring from start to finish and more times than not there's nothing going on. We see Kansas inside a women's clothing store where he pretends to be buying something for his sister. We seen him not getting along too well with a hot naked woman trying to seduce him. We then learn more about his eventual sex change.
Mahon made dozens of sexploitation movies and I must admit that I was shocked to see him do this type of movie. He sneaks in a few naked women as I'm guessing he still needing to get men into the picture. Sadly the film is just downright boring and the 70-minute running time seems double.
