Bearing more than a distant resemblance to "Maman Colibri", an exotic melodrama which was filmed twice in the silent age (Duvivier) , then as a talkie by Jean Dréville (1937)

A half-breed ,Kalina ,whose parents were murdered when she was still a baby was saved by Taraor ,a strong black man she considers her adoptive father ; so when she falls for a dashing officer from the Legion Etrangère captain Portal who's in awe of this statuesque dancer ; but the Army ,in the shape of a general ,views this liaison ,let alone a marriage , in an unfavorable light ;besides ,a chic novelist ,Sonia , is jealous of this dancer and scolds her .And Taraor wants more than a father's affection.

Filmed on location, and featuring ,which was rare at the time ,Arab actors in the cast ,it recalls " Cartacalha" ,another movie of craftsman Leon Mathot's , which told the story of a gypsy dancer , but with a tragic ending this time.
