Bridge over troubled times ....
ulicknormanowen22 June 2020
The precis given on the page is accurate except for the name of the hero which spells "Lorillon" with an L;it does not matter since the movie is a bomb ,a not funny comedy in spite of talented Elvire Popesco.

A valet,Gustave , is unbeatable at bridge :so do not expect any suspense .His master ,Ravier,is jealous -bridge must be reserved for diplomats ,bourgeois, chic people -of him and dismisses him.Undaunted , the valet keeps on playing in the service of a beautiful woman ,Honoria, coveted by his ex-employer .Note that in their bridge players club, women are not allowed and can only have a drink at the bar.

But when they learn that the champion is a plebeian , those snob machos turn their back on him .And at the domestic staff bal , his colleagues reject him too. However ,the quality circle realizes that without their expert ,they stand no chance to win the championship cup.

Released in the dark hours of the Occupation , it can be seen as a way to cheer up the people :every dog has his day , you too can climb on every rung of the social ladder. But the ending is distastefully bourgeois.

Star Henri Garat had another gift ;he was a renowned singer, and of course, he performs two or three ditties :if your taste do not run that way, use the fast forward button.
