- The life of a conservative mayor of an Italian small town is upset by the alleged adultery committed by his wife with a famous local playboy.
- Lorenzo is the mayor of a small town in the Italian province. One evening, returning home, he surprises the well-known playboy Ghigo Buccilli who tries to seduce his beautiful wife: enraged, he threatens the two with a gun, and Buccilli is the victim of a heart attack; the man survives, but is forced into total rest and therefore must stay at the mayor's house. An endless series of gags and misunderstandings ensue, consisting of the stratagems used by Lorenzo to prevent the affair from being discovered and becoming the subject of gossip by fellow citizens.
Because of the event Lorenzo, who works in a bank, had been unable to attend an important meeting with Swiss banker Gruber, receiving a heavy lecture from his president. When days later Gruber was arrested for currency trafficking along with other officials of major banks, Lorenzo was promoted to general manager because the meeting had there been would have compromised the company and he could do nothing but thank Ghigo himself, who had unwittingly prevented the meeting.
Lorenzo and Ghigo, who had been slowly getting closer, then decide to celebrate their promotion by getting drunk. However, they are surprised by the commissioner and his fellow journalist Lanzarotti, who would like to write a hot article. Ghigo, however, blackmails them by showing them nude photos of his wive.
Lorenzo finally facilitates an insurance practice that reimburses Ghigo 300 million, which he uses to buy a boat for both of them. The film ends with Lorenzo's voiceover ironically how one can become best friends with someone who wanted to steal his wife.
