Here's an RKO Sportscope short covering the Out Island Regatta, a Bahamian race that is still an annual event as I write this -- the 66th Annual Regatta is scheduled to begin two days after I write this, and continue for four days. There are few sights as elegant as two-masted sailing ships heeling into the wind, and this short is a pleasure to watch on that point.
The Sportscope series of documentary shorts began in regular production in the middle of the 1940s at RKO, a specialized form of newsreel that the majors distributed as part of a program of "Feature and selected short subjects." While the feature was usually priced to reflect its novelty and frequently commanded a piece of the theater's total take, second features went for a flat price, and shorts were available for a few dollars per day on a program that might change several times a week.
