Gentleman burglar...

In his native France bandit Robert Macaire is almost forgotten but: In the French all-time classic "les Enfants Du Paradis" ,Pierre Brasseur plays Frederic Lemaitre who plays Robert Macaire in a melodrama called "l'Auberge Des Adrets" (which we visit in the silent movie too) .In Carné's masterpiece, the thespian turns the tear-jerker story into a farce.

There's also a French dish called "Pomme De Terre Macaire" and it's delicious.

Jean Epstein 's film which does not exceed 40 or 45 min is a pleasant one ,and the director, for once ,displays a certain sense of humor: The young noble to the bandit who is (under a pseudonym) his father the marquis 's special guest : "He should not visit us ;he would have a warm welcome!" The bandit to the gendarmes who have not recognized him: "leave me your prisoner (his accomplice);it will be easier to catch that thief!" A forerunner of Philippe De Broca's "Cartouche" as well as Maurice Leblanc's "Arsene Lupin" ,Macaire is also a romantic man who has a love affair with the marquis's daughter.
