- For some time, the police have been on the trail of a mysterious burglar who has evaded capture whilst executing one daring robbery after another. No one has any clue as to the identity of this elusive criminal and he has come to be known as Monsieur Personne.—morroviolet
- For several weeks, a mysterious Mr. Nobody has been signing audacious burglaries under the nose and under the beard of the police, who prove to be powerless. Josette Verneau is a wealthy young and beautiful widow, the Count of Tregunc having heard of Josette's spiritual talents and declaring himself skeptical, is invited to her home in order to confuse her. That evening, there is at Josette a whole gratin of personalities, Josette in order to prevent any accusation of cheating takes care before the session to condemn all the exits of the room. A few moments before the start of the session, the light goes out and a person in the dark steals all the valuables carried by the guests. The police are alerted and the superintendent logically concludes that the thief is one of the participants in the evening. But neither the body search nor the search yields any results. Leaving the apartment, the superintendent realizes that his pocket has a hole in it and he understands what happened, the thief slipped the stolen objects into his raincoat pocket then cut him to recover them. A few days later, the jewel stolen from Josette mysteriously reappears. The Count of Tregunc pays a courtesy visit to Josette and describes to her the precise modus operandi of Mr. Nobody, Josette is infinitely troubled.
We then learn that a private detective is playing a double game by passing on sensitive information to an accomplice, Germain. After the detective gives him information on two big cases in the south, he discovers that Germain is his wife's lover. So he decides to take revenge by calling the police. We then learn that Germain is the henchman of Mr. Nobody who is none other than the Count of Tregunc.
A bank authorized representative must bring a large sum of cash to Josette's country house, the police monitor the train that goes from Paris to Foux, but Mr. Nobody, thanks to meticulous organization and a network of accomplices, manages to make get the attorney and his money out of the train. Once again the police are fooled.
The notary, having received a threatening letter from Mr. Nobody, confides in the police. Custodian of a very large sum of money and the banks being closed on Sundays, he had the idea of depositing this sum temporarily in Josette Verneau's safe. The police and the gendarmerie take the maximum precaution to avoid theft. Mr. Nobody "who was not passing there by chance" is invited to Josette's not without having discreetly noted the imprint of the lock of the safe. He sets down a timer which, when the time comes, will diffuse an anesthetic gas. The police have an inspector locked up in the safe room as well as the notary. At night, Mr. Nobody using the key he made and gas has no trouble stealing the contents of the safe.
The next morning Mr. Nobody leaves the villa, the notary is satisfied, he asks to see his money, and finds that everything is there. While much further Mr. Nobody confides to Germain that the money was indeed stolen but replaced by counterfeit notes, however the money belonging to Josette was left. Mr. Person who has always had a weakness for pretty women.
