No single story, no single film can capture the phenomenon that was The Beatles. But collectively, these examinations offer insight into the band’s impact on music and culture.
Such is the challenge when it comes to The Beatles’ landmark album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band,” which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its release – and the 50th year that it has blown away music aficionados. Thinkpieces and tributes to the groundbreaking album have been in the news lately, trying to capture just how innovative and important it was to the music scene. Named No. 1 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, “Sgt. Pepper’s” topped the charts for 15 weeks in the U.S. and 27 in the U.K. In other words, it was and is still a big deal.

The kaleidoscopic baroque-and-roll masterwork that elevated The Beatles from pop stars to multimedia conceptual artists, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band celebrates its 50th anniversary in June. Arriving in U.K. cinemas later this month to coincide with a feast of deluxe album repackages, Alan G. Parker's cumbersomely titled documentary It Was Fifty Years Ago Today! The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper and Beyond frames the Fab Four's psychedelic 1967 game-changer within a turbulent 18-month period when they stopped playing live, flirted with Eastern religion, popularized LSD, suffered the tragic loss of manager Brian Epstein and launched their avant garde arts organization Apple.

The rock hall also said Tuesday it would give a special award to Nile Rodgers, whose disco-era band Chic failed again to make the cut after its 11th time nominated.
Baez will be inducted only months after her 1960s paramour, Bob Dylan, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

I've been saying this over and over whenever the issue of Caitlin's heel turn to Killer Frost comes up or is hinted at on this show: they're getting it right. And holy moley, the actual episode, Killer Frost didn't disappoint in that regard. The Flash was an absolute masterclass in how you toy with the long-term fate of a beloved character, bring her all the way to the brink, and give fans heart conditions in the process.
There are simply so many ways that they've managed to nail the Killer Frost transformation, but there's one key here: patience.

Thematically and emotionally, The Missing series two struck all the right notes this week. The multiple plot strands coalesced in an episode that was alternately sickening, thrilling and moving. Sickening in the scenes showing Gettrick’s home life with Sophie and Lucy; thrilling in every step closer Julien came to discovering Adam and what really happened in Iraq in 1991; and moving just about every time Keeley Hawes and David Morrissey were on screen.

1.5 Brave-ish Heart
I was dead wrong. Corakinus’ warrior spirit didn’t waver because of April’s heart’s humanising influence. She simply defeated him using the power of gritted teeth and emphatic line delivery.
This was an emphatic episode, start to finish. There was no let-up in its urgent intensity. Between April usurping the Shadow Kin crown and Charlie almost dropping his race’s version of the A-bomb, it was an exhausting forty minutes. There were resolute speeches, battlefield speeches, pleading speeches, a brief introduction to Sikhism’s external articles of faith, then yet more impassioned speeches.

Yeah, I kinda wish Nigel Lythgoe & Co. hadn’t added the “Classic” modifier to “Classic Rock, No Ballads” night — why not let the kids go current, if they’re so inclined? — but still, we won’t get seven consecutive ballads. (What-what?) And as long as Nigel isn’t maniacally offering a meager list of 15 or 20 pre-approved songs, it’s a pretty broad theme, too, with plenty of opportunities for brilliance and/or catastrophe.

Ravi Shankar, the legendary sitar player, died Monday, his family said in a statement. Dubbed the "Godfather of World Music," Shankar was 92 years old. In a career that spanned six decades, Shankar served as a bridge between Eastern and Western music, collaborating with everyone from avant garde composer Philip Glass to rock star David Crosby. However, his greatest influence may have been on The Beatles, who inspired by his delicate playing, integrated the sitar into their seminal album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band." Along with George Harrison, Shankar would launch...

Citigroup Inc. has seized control of Emi Group after the record label group failed to meet the loan terms used to finance its previous takeover by multimillionaire Guy Hands and his private equity firm, Terra Firma. The London-based Emi, a century-plus-old company, includes the labels Astralwerks, Blue Note, Capitol, Virgin Records, and of course, Emi Records among others.
Citigroup now owns all of Emi, according to Bloomberg's Business Week , and in the debt-for-equity swap Emi's debt decreased "by 65 percent to 1.2 billion pounds ($1.94 billion)."
The takeover may lead to a sale, now that the company's crippling debt has been so considerably reduced. Aside from current artists like the Beastie Boys, Coldplay, Gorillaz, and Norah Jones the group's catalog includes legendary records like Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust," The Beatles "Revolver" and "Sgt.

Given my oft-cantankerous and frequently, in the word of one editor, "pugilistic" rhetorical manner, it may surprise some to learn that I am married to an exceptionally tender-hearted woman. And while it would hardly be fair, or, for that matter, accurate, to describe her as squeamish to the point where it might squelch her aesthetic adventurousness or curiosity, it is an indisputable fact that she can be fairly vigilant about shielding herself from certain depictions that she's learned through experience are likely to upset her. She has a particular horror of works wherein old folks are made to suffer. For instance, just the other morning, I had this idea I'd like to listen to The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band. Yes, because I'm an old hippie. In any event, as I prepared the disc for auditing, I remembered something, and went to the other side of the...

Singer/songwriter Brian Wilson, founder of The Beach Boys.
During my time at Venice Magazine I was lucky enough to meet and interview most of my heroes from the world of film. Fortune smiled on me further when a few musical idols were thrown into the mix, as well (see previously-posted chats with Lou Reed, Quincy Jones and Robbie Robertson). When I learned in October of 2002 that I was going to interview legendary Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson, I was elated. I had gotten to literally stand next to Wilson nearly a decade earlier, at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, while he gave a private recital, just Wilson and a white Steinway, for a small gathering of people in a Park City tavern, celebrating the premiere of Don Was’ documentary "Brian Wilson: I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times," which took a candid look at Wilson’s tumultuous life.

By now, you've probably read and/or heard about Mayer's instantly infamous Playboy interview, in which he used the N-word and made sexually charged references to famous exes Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.
Mayer quickly apologized for some of the comments he made in the interview, which also featured comments about black women and his " 'hood pass" that many have perceived as racist, including a number of prominent rappers. The album that ushered in the spiritual awakening of British music still reminds how dangerous the collision of rock and dance can be
Mentioned in the same breath as The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band and the Sex Pistols’ Nevermind the Bullocks, The Stone Roses’ eponymous 1989 debut managed to demolish the last whispers of the whiny reign of the New Romantics while signaling a global and sonic revolution.
