Each Man Is His Own Devil..And Creates His Own Hell
sol-kay10 August 2004
****SPOILERS**** The movie takes place in a God-forsaken part of the Mojave Desert called "Sin's Kitchen" which turns out to be a living hell for everyone involved.

A series of strange coincidences bring some dozen people together from different parts of the country and a bizarre story begins playing out between them which in some way connects them to each other.

Rex,Jeffrey Wright, the drifter who picks up a woman Joanna, Gabrielle Lazure, at a bar in the almost deserted desert and takes off with her in her van to have sex. Just before Rex came to the bar he was involved in a car accident where the person Jerry, John Cothran Jr, who picked up Rex hitch-hiking got a little too close and friendly with him thus having Rex fight him off and cause the car to go off the road killing him.

After the romp in the desert between Rex and Joanna she tell him her life story and to Rex's surprise he finds out that both Joanna and Jerry were married and even worse he had a major connection with both of them. This disclosure drives Rex wacky and Joanna to kill herself.

Also coming into the bar are two mobsters Vinnie & Joe, Robert Miano & Al Sapienza, who just did in Fat Eddie, Johnny Williams, who was going to testify against the mob. Both Vinnie and Joe were told by their mob boss to just scare Fat Eddie but when he smashed Vinnie with a shovel and broke his right arm Vinnie let him have it with the same shovel right between the eyes killing him.

Unknown to Vinnie is that Joe is a cop and that he's also being tracked by two bounty hunters Rock and his wife Lou, Kevin Jackson and Sarah Buxton, who want to get that $100,00.00 reward for Vinnie's capture; Dead or Alive.

Seeing Joe at the bar Rock almost blows his cover, both worked together as cops, but later the reward money for taking in Vinnie gets the best of both Rock & Lou. Before they could get him Vinnie sees a wanted poster of himself by Rock's truck and realizes that he's the object of their affection. Before they can jump him he and Joe get the drop on them and finish them off but not before Rock fingers Joe as a undercover policeman which has him blasted to pieces by the outraged Vinnie with his shotgun.

Finally there's a group of six graduate students Reece Rat J.D Andi Carlton & EisenBaum, Pierre Cosso Jenniffer Farrell Elea Bartling Domiziano Arcangeli & David Storrs, driving through the desert from the California Institute of Technology to the Texas' University of Austin. The students are going there for a multi-facility masters thesis project between the two schools on the possible use of a superconductor at temp. above absolute zero.

On the first night Eisenbaum tells his fellow students that he discovered a way to operate a superconductor at room temp. not at absolute zero the temp. which is needed for them to be activated. Telling them that when they get to Austin he'll present the paper proving that to the staff of his findings. This discovery will make him a very famous as well as rich man. Celebrating his findings and getting drunk for the first time in his life Eisenbaum later that night falls or is pushed off a cliff to his death.

With Eisenbaum dead and later that morning finding that the battery in the van dead as well the five surviving students are stuck in the broiling desert with no way to get out. Greed and gluttony start getting the best of them as the stranded students start to look for Eisenbaum's papers about his finding that he kept on a computer disk.

All of the students, save Reece, end up dead or killing themselves over the valuable disk with the disk ending up smashed as it fell between the rocks in the desert as Rat tried to run off with it and fell, like Eisenbaum, off the cliff to her death. The three survivors of the story Rex Reece & Vinnie, who were are picked up by Vinnie hitch-hiking,are seen as the movie ends driving out of "Sin's Kitchen".

Weird and unusual film about how evil works on people in all walks of life bringing the worst out of, in most cases, all of them them and uses the desert in and around Sin's Kitchen to tell it's story.

Worth a Gander

New York has Hell's Kitchen and the Mojave Desert had Sin's Kitchen. You don't want to visit either, but at least in Hell's Kitchen you have a better chance at survival.

I watched this movie for one reason and one reason only: Jeffrey Wright. Ever since I saw him in "Shaft" and found out he wasn't Latino I've been a fan.

"Sin's Kitchen" is, as I read in the summary, a modern day triptych in which three stories connect in one place. One story involves a mobster, his apprentice, a snitch, and a husband and wife bounty hunting team. The second story involves six college students on a road trip. The third story involves a drifter and a lonely woman. All three stories occur simultaneously and they all had the benefit of the same narrator who only chimed in for commentary.

To be honest, none of the stories were that compelling although the first two did add a bit of action and intrigue. The third story was the biggest drag until the very end. It's an ending you will never forget. Is it worth watching this entire movie for? Not really, but if you've seen everything and you happen upon "Sin's Kitchen", then it is worth a gander.
