Super Metroid is said to have been the game that made speed running popular.
The narrating voice in the beginning was provided by Dan Owsen, a representative of Nintendo of America, during one of his visits to the Japanese development team.
Despite the Metroid series being such a success for Nintendo, this was the only game in the series ever released for the Super Nintendo.
In 2010 it was revealed by Yoshio Sakamoto, co-creator of the Metroid franchise, that a 3D follow-up on the Nintendo 64 called 'Metroid 64' was at one point in the works, but it didn't happen because he couldn't imagine how to implement the N64's controller to control a 3D environment. He felt that he was not the right person to spearhead it, but due to lack of concrete ideas within the team, no one ended up taking up the task during the console's lifespan.
