Promotional Short Of Ill Fated Beauty
Kelt Smith25 November 2000
Made by MGM in 1966 & released the following year to coincide with the premiere of EYE OF THE DEVIL, this 11 minute long B/W promotional short showcasing a then unknown starlet named SHARON TATE is an interesting, and ironically morbid little film. We are shown SHARON at the MGM studio in London taking voice lessons, having her flawless face made up, posing for photographs. Then on to France for location filming of EYE OF THE DEVIL, where both director J. LEE THOMPSON and actor DAVID NIVEN offer gratuitous accolades. A snippet from the final film is shown with TATE affecting a British accent and DEBORAH KERR. There are also quick glimpses of SHARON at her location housing, and out dancing with EYE co-star DAVID HEMMINGS. Knowing the tragic ending to the life of this absolutely gorgeous young woman, this film is so utterly ironic that you cannot help but to watch it with a morbid fascination. TATE is promoted as a certain to be 'superstar'. One of the most beautiful women of the 1960's , young, talented, and with an infectious joy, you can feel the promise of what she would have been had she lived longer. As the expression goes, "We Was Robbed !"

What Might Have Been

With ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD a hit in the theaters, with Margot Robbie playing Sharon Tate in that movie, this promotional short, made for EYE OF THE DEVIL, claims to show the movie audience the real girl.

Of course it's as carefully constructed as any feature, her lines praising co-stars David Niven and Deborah Kerr, the shots of her dancing at a disco with David Hemmings. It's carefully written and directed and shot and reshot until the talent behind the cameras say "This is as good as it's going to get" and the producers say it's good enough to use. It's Sharon Tate the actress playing Sharon Tate the budding movie star.

Would she have lasted? Would she have graduated from talented starlet to actual star if she had not been murdered? There's no way of telling. That's what makes this movie so poignant.

A Must See For Tate Fans

All Eyes on Sharon Tate (1967)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

This short is basically a promotional piece for MGM's EYE OF THE DEVIL, the J. Lee Thompson film that featured David Niven, Deborah Kerr, Daving Hemmings and Sharon Tate. Tate is the main focus as we learn how she got her start in acting and then we get some behind the scenes stuff showing her getting ready to work. We see Tate in the make-up chair, learning her lines and then doing a couple scenes. The featurette also wants to make sure people know how "hip" she is so we see her off the set at a disco (with Hemmings) as well as other spots around London. There's no question that in 1967 people would view this short one way but today it's seen as something completely different. The film talks about the bright future of the young actress but everyone knows what happened to Tate so that really makes you see this in a different light. Overall it's a very impressive little short as it's well-produced and there's no denying that it does a fantastic job showing off Tate. I'm sure that black dress showing off her body wasn't an accident as Thompson talks about what makes her so special as a person and an actress. We even hear from Tate who comments on what she wants to do and where she sees herself going forward.

It was interesting time capsule to open .

One of those evenings I could not settle in on a film. As I was perusing through TCM app . I saw Valley of the Dolls listed. I checked the cast and noticed Sharon Tate was in the film. I have never seen a Sharon Tate film. I did not want a depressing movie so I clicked on Sharon name which lead me to all kind on TCM goodies about the actress. I ended up watching a film clip bfrom her first film Eye of the Devil, Sharon was very otherworldly and I was impressed with her tone of voice. That lead me to a Short Promo of the film called All Eyes on Sharon Tate, It was interesting time capsule to open .

Creepy, creepy, creepy.

I am not going to give a numerical rating to this one, as it's just a promotional film and not the sort of thing you can adequately score. However, this does not mean it's something you shouldn't watch. Considering that Sharon Tate was murdered in one of the most famous and gruesome murders of the age, it is strangely creepy. It's even creepier when you consider that perhaps this film helped to draw notoriety to Miss Tate--the same sort of attention that led to the Manson family picking her as a victim of their mayhem. In other words, it's got a certain amount of strange and intriguing quality that make it worth seeing--even though much of the content is a bit insipid--as it is with most promotional films. However, I did like hearing Tate with her fake British accent--it sounded, to this American, rather credible.
