The story concerns the love of an English officer for a little Boer maiden, the daughter of Widow Detzer. But she is forced to marry a farmer, a brute of a man, who has had an affair with a servant girl. Years pass and the farmer renews his attentions to the servant girl. His wife leaves him with her little boy, to return to her mother's across the dangerous veldt. On the way one of her oxen is captured and eaten by a lion. Then she is attacked by the natives and captured. She is about to be burned when the English soldiers, hearing the shots, come to the rescue. At the head of the soldiers is the young officer, who, years before, had loved her. She has never forgotten him. When her husband is later discovered dead, half eaten by the lions, she is thankful, in the end she accepts the love of the young officer and all ends happily.
