Winnie the Pooh was a big part of my childhood, and I still have a lot of affection for it now. What I love about Winnie the Pooh are the timeless characters and the stories which are full of childhood innocence and fun. I love the TV series The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, while not quite as good as The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and the classic short films it is one of Disney's best shows to me.
Pooh Party is a lot of fun. It is not quite among the best of the video tape series in the way that Helping Others, Sharing & Caring, Detective Tigger, Cowboy Pooh and particularly Making Friends are, but when it comes to the fun and innocence of the stories, it is pretty much irresistible. Like all the episodes featured in the video collection, the animation is elegant and colourful, the music jaunty and dynamic, the writing droll and the stories and characters engaging. Not to mention the voice acting, Paul Winchell is always entertaining.
"Party Poohper" is the cutest of the three stories featured to me. The story is the definition of cuteness, but it manages to do it without being cloying. Another source of the cuteness are the little bunnies, they are simply adorable, then again I have a thing for animated white rabbits with pink eyes. The rest of the characters are delightful with Rabbit's increasing frustration and Pooh's endearing way of getting things wrong(ie. using too many eggs for the cake). Tigger, my favourite character, as always is very funny especially with the amusing but true "When a Tigger gives a party, he just opens the door and hopes for the best". And I also wouldn't say no to Piglet decorating my house.
"A Bird in the Hand" is funny, moving and nostalgic. It is not quite as great as "The Great Honey Pot Robbery", which also featured Stan and Heff, or especially "Find Her Keep Her", with Kessie as a baby, somehow I find those funnier and more genuinely poignant. But it is still a great episode, that has a heart-warming story, droll dialogue and beautiful animation. Stan and Heff are suitably fun and antagonistic, and while more older/adolescent than as we saw her recently Kessie is still very sweet. Rabbit once again shows a more caring side, and Pooh and Tigger still entertain.
"A Pooh Day Afternoon" is my absolute favourite episode on Pooh Party and one of my favourite episodes of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in general. The animation and music are top notch, and the story and characters still engage. I do like it when some episodes are based at Christopher Robin's house as you get to see more of where Christopher Robin lives and who he lives with. The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh always did have superb writing, and "A Pooh Day Afternoon" is no exception.
In my opinion, "Piglet you were just supposed to let the handkerchief disappear. Where are you?"/In the land of enchantment, which is awfully dark/They don't make magic stuff like they used to", " Oh, no! He's going to eat me. He's starting at the bottom and working his way up", "He's getting closer the tires round" and "By the way he was running I'd say he be in Alsaka by now" are the best parts, as well as "Squonky. I don't carry any Squonky"(Tigger is really hilarious in this scene) and "I wish this lease would stop playing hard to get". Oh, and Pooh makes for a very cute baby.
Overall, maybe not quite one of the best of the series but one of the cutest and funniest. 10/10 Bethany Cox
