Ahead of its 39th edition, Poland’s Warsaw Film Festival is betting on timely topics.
“The role of filmmakers, and artists in general, is to react,” says festival director Stefan Laudyn.
“For years, we have been showing films that criticize the situation in various countries, not just in Poland. We try to avoid puff pieces.”
While there is space for “lighter topics” as well, supporting Ukraine – and Ukrainian filmmakers – remains one of the priorities.
“We initiated the first solidarity action with Ukraine back in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea, we also supported Oleg Sentsov. Last year, we featured the entire Ukrainian competition from Odesa International Film Festival, which couldn’t take place due to the war.”
This year, eight Ukrainian productions and co-productions will be shown at the fest. Including “Diagnosis: Dissent” by Denys Tarasov, about punitive psychiatry used by the Kgb, and Taras Dron’s “The Glass House,” where...

Ruby Baker’s carefree days of staying out past curfew, carousing with her besties, and simply being a teenager are all over. The nightmare of The Glass House begins with the protagonist (Leelee Sobieski) learning her parents, David and Grace, have both died in a car accident. Ruby and her younger brother Rhett (Trevor Morgan) are then quickly taken in by family friends and former neighbors Terry and Erin Glass, whose home is located in Malibu. Obviously a big life adjustment like this requires some time, but Ruby’s grief turns into suspicion. There’s something not right about her new guardians.
In this 2001 thriller, those first couple of scenes with the whole Baker clan are wholesome and inviting; David and Grace’s last moments with their children are warmly colored and glowing. But once they’re gone and the Baker children move into their foster home, the movie gradually becomes cold and severe.

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

The year 2000 was a simpler time in so many ways. In the pre-Sept. 11 world, cell phones still had buttons, only featured one game and were actually used to make calls; Netflix was still known as a DVD-by-mail rental company, and the idea that someone was listening to your every word seemed to be the subject of fiction because Alexa had yet to be invented.
But the latter certainly made for compelling television, as was evidenced when “Big Brother” launched July 5, 2000, on CBS. It was only seven months into the new millennium, but television was about to be changed forever.
The U.S. version of “Big Brother” was an unscripted competition series that saw 10 strangers living in a “house” on a soundstage in Los Angeles, competing for half a million dollars. With them were dozens of cameras and microphones so that everything the houseguests said and did, even in private with each other,...

The 1970s was the Golden Age of the “Movie of the Week” with the three networks –ABC, CBS and NBC — not only offering theatrical flicks several days a week, but also made-for-tv movies. These ran the gamut from the silly — 1973’s “The Horror at 37,000 Feet” — to such acclaimed award-winning fare as 1970’s “Tribes,” 1971’s “Brian’s Song” and “Duel,” 1972’s “That Certain Summer” and “The Glass House,” 1974’s “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and 1975’s “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” and “Love Among the Ruins.”
I have especially warm memories of ABC’s “Love Among the Ruins,” which marked the only film pairing of Oscar-winning legends Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier. I was a junior in college when it originally aired and I recall an Sro crowd at the Brooks Hall TV lounge at Allegheny College in Meadville (Sharon Stone’s hometown) Pa to watch the exquisite romantic comedy.

“The Glass House”
ABC put 14 contestants into a house, and let America vote to decide who would be evicted and who would win $250,000. But with low ratings and a lawsuit from CBS claiming the show was a ripoff of “Big Brother,” “The Glass House” lasted just one season.
“I Wanna Marry ‘Harry'”
More than a few dating competition shows involve some kind of deceit, but few were as ridiculous as the one at the center of Fox’s “I Wanna Marry ‘Harry.'” Starring a male lead with only a slight resemblance to the British prince, the show pushed the limits of credulity.
“Joe Millionaire”
Attempting to expand on the format perfected by “The Bachelor,” Fox debuted “Joe Millionaire” just one year later, pitting contestants against each other for the affections of an average Joe whom they believed to be rich. Over a decade later, star Evan Marriott is still apologizing for deceiving those women.

Alexander Skarsgard looked all kinds of fine when he attended the Emmy Awards on Sunday night. Despite sporting that much-debated-about new mustache, the actor had one hell of a night. He took home the award for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie for his role in Big Little Lies, shared a smooch with costar Nicole Kidman (in front of Keith Urban!), and had his mom on his arm as his date. But during his cute acceptance speech, we couldn't help but wonder what the deal is with his accent. For the third summer in a row, ABC is airing a high-quality, well-produced, genre-bending reality competition series. Two years ago it experimented with the highly interactive "Big Brother" knock-off called "The Glass House," and followed that with last summer's reality version of a murder mystery dinner theatre, "Whodunnit," which was produced by CSI creator Anthony Zuiker. ABC didn't give either a second chance: the former was officially cancelled and the latter didn't return for a second season. This summer introduced "The Quest," which is the most fully realized hybrid of a scripted series and reality competition yet. It sent contestants into a scripted world populated by actors and governed by an original mythology that tightly integrates reality competitions and eliminations, but also allows contestants to be entirely unscripted and keeps the game pure. The series comes from six world-class producers (Emmy-winning "Amazing Race" producers Elise Doganieri and Bertram Van Munster,...

CBS has settled a dispute with producers of ABC’s alleged Big Brother knock-off, Glass House, the network announced today.
The news comes a year after CBS tried but failed to gain traction on a suit brought against ABC and producers of Glass House, claiming copyright infringement. When that motion failed to get the courts to bar ABC from airing the program, CBS dropped the suit and instead pursued arbitration, which takes place out of the courts, against some of the show’s producers.
CBS’ statement reads in full:
We have reached a settlement in arbitration with the parties in ”The Glass House” legal dispute.

Chicago – Every Summer needs a guilty pleasure. (Anyone else watch “The Glass House”? Just me? Ok. Moving on.) This Summer’s guilty pleasure could easily be NBC’s truly bizarre “Siberia,” premiering tonight at 9pm Cst. This hybrid of “Survivor” and “Lost” has some truly rough edges but also contains an addictively strange premise that could separate it from a lot of the bland network offerings this season.
Sure, most of the new must-sees are on cable this season (“Ray Donovan,” “The Bridge,” “Low Winter Sun”) but those programs are intense. If you want something left of center, you may come back to NBC.
Television Rating: 3.0/5.0
For at least the first half of “Siberia,” viewers unfamiliar with the conceit of the show are likely to think it’s a reality program. The editing, the to-camera interviews, the host, the structure — it feels like a “Survivor” clone, a genre unto itself in the last decade.

As the marketplace has become glutted with singing and dancing competitions, and the fallout over The Glass House demonstrates that existential ennui doesn't always translate to a successful series, producers are forced to think beyond the reality show formula to come up with formats ever more dangerous and dumb. Some examples recently put into development: Syfy's Opposite Worlds, a Survivor/Big Brother-like concept based on a hit Chilean show, where contestants compete to see who gets to live in the Future, a utopian place where "every wish can be granted at the push of a button," and who ...

CBS‘ reality mainstay Big Brother brushed off a challenge from ABC’s similarly themed The Glass House to deliver another solid ratings performance and earn a renewal. CBS has picked up the voyeuristic unscripted series for a 15th cycle to air next summer. This summer’s edition, which concludes tonight with a 90-minute finale, is averaging 6.8 million viewers, 2.5/8 in adults 18-49. Big Brother, which premiered in 2000, spans multiple platforms, with full-length episodes and highlight clips available at CBS.com and across the CBS Audience Network, and 24/7 streaming video from inside the Big Brother house made available by CBS and RealNetworks. Companion program Big Brother: After Dark airs on Showtime 2. Big Brother is hosted by Julie Chen and executive produced by Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan for Fly on the Wall Entertainment, in association with Endemol USA.

Biggest Backfire: Bachelor Pad’s Michael managed to mastermind Erica’s ouster… only to have her take him down with her. Continuing to prove herself wildly oblivious, she said in exit interviews, “You expect to [on the show] and make friends, not lose any.”
Most Prudish Organization: So what’s got the Parent’s Television Council’s panties in an uproar now? Pixelated nudity. Why? because “it could be perceived to be a closer simulation of complete frontal nudity given that the viewer is seeing all flesh tones.” Anybody else beginning to suspect that every member of the PTC is a nevernude?
Least Missed: Wait, The Glass House is already over? Um… who won? Eh, never mind.
Best Reaction: The always horribly dressed Mike Boogie had to give a literal tip of the hat to fellow Big Brother competitor Ian for masterminding his ouster. Wonder if Ian can figure out a way to boot the Chenbot?...

Fast National ratings for Monday, Aug. 20, 2012
"Hell's Kitchen" trimmed the field to its final four chefs Monday and also racked up the night's biggest audience on broadcast TV -- even though it was down from last week. NBC's "Grimm," meanwhile, dipped some in its second episode of the season, and "Stars Earn Stripes" was also down.
Elsewhere, "Bachelor Pad" improved a little for ABC compared to last week, but few people cared to see who won "The Glass House."
Fox averaged 5.7 million viewers and a 3.3 rating/5 share in households Monday night, beating out CBS (5 million, 3.3/5). NBC's 4.4 million viewers and 2.7/4 was good for third, while ABC (4.1 million, 2.9/5) came in fourth. The CW drew a little over half a million people and a 0.4/1.
Fox scored a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49, leading the rest of the field by a full point. There was a three-way tie for second as ABC, CBS and NBC...

There was a lot of reality and a lot of Ramsey on television Monday night. ABC’s The Glass House (0.9/3) wrapped up its first season with Toledo police officer Kevin Braun the $250,000 winner. Up 29% from last week, the once legally embattled show, which debuted on June 18, has generally floundered in the ratings since the very beginning. Before The Glass House, ABC ran a two-hour Bachelor Pad (1.5/4) at 8 Pm. Bachelor Pad also was up from last week, 25% in its case from last week’s series low. With local market pre-emptions of NFL Preseason Football, those ABC numbers could be inflated in fast nationals. Over on Fox it was a double serving of Gordon Ramsey with Hotel Hell (2.0/6) and Hell’s Kitchen (2.5/7). Hell was up a slight 5% from its Monday debut last week, but Kitchen was down 7% from last week’s high-rated episode. Still, despite its slump, Hell’s Kitchen was the...

There were five people remaining at the start of the final hour of "The Glass House" (Mon., 10 p.m. Et on ABC). We are referring to the people in the house and not the viewers, though those numbers were dwindling throughout the season as well. Things got so bleak, that CBS decided they didn't even care anymore and dropped that lawsuit alleging it was a rip-off of "Big Brother."
But the show had its faithful followers and still had $250,000 to give out. After the quick elimination of Mike -- for the second time this summer. Andrea earned a spot in the finale by winning the Challenge, while America's vote put Kevin and Jeffrey in danger. But in the end, it was Jeffrey who went home, leaving Kevin, Andrea and Erica to battle it out.
Apparently the bizarre "showmance" between Kevin and Erica that came to dominate the summer did nothing to hurt either of them.

"The Glass House" finale is here -- so for whomever is still watching, we're down to Kevin, Andrea, Erica, Jeffrey and Mike. Who do you hope wins the money?
The final three ends up being Andrea Clark, Erica Russell and Kevin Braun. After a rather weird live finale with speeches, the viewers choose to give the $250,000 to Kevin. Did the right person win? Was it a satisfying ending?
Let's see how we got there ...
The major drama in the house is that Erica likes Kevin and had no idea about his special lady friend at home (until Jeffrey tells her). And while he insists to Andrea and Mike that he doesn't like her past a drunken kiss one night, the editors show that he has said differently to her. Erica totally likes him, which is kind of sad, but Mike likens it to "Fatal Attraction." Erica doesn't strike us as...

Howard claims that her role on the show was diminished and eventually eliminated after she complained of daily, sexually charged comments directed at her from a fellow employee.

The Season 2 premiere of "Grimm" got a bit of a boost from its heavy promotion during NBC's Olympics coverage, scoring its second-highest adults 18-49 rating ever on Monday.
NBC's other premiere, "Stars Earn Stripes," had a somewhat more modest start. Fox's "Hotel Hell" put up decent premiere numbers, but not on the level of Gordon Ramsay's other shows.

NBC (5.3 million, 3.1/5) was not far off the pace in second. CBS (4.9 million, 3.2/5) came in third, and ABC (3.4 million, 2.4/4) finished fourth. The CW drew 606,000 viewers and a 0.4/1.
