A man comes home to discover that two burglars have broken into his quarters. Before he can chase them off, everyone has gone through a measure of indignity.
Technically this Melies piece shows some advances in cutting as the scene shifts from one room to another and back again. However, the story telling is not so good as his other pieces, as everyone has some havoc wreaked on them, nor are the acrobatics so amusing as they have been previously. Perhaps this is due to this being a second unit or perhaps ramping up production to compete with Pathe and Gaumont was beginning to take its toll.
This is one of the many previously lost or infrequently seen Melies pictures that have been made available by Serge Bromberg, David Shepherd and a myriad of other hands in the newly issued DVD set GEORGES MELIES: FIRST WIZARD OF CINEMA. Required viewing for anyone interested in the history of movies ..... and a lot of fun.
