Only about a quarter of the original film remains....so it's hard to rate accurately

Apparently, "Le Phénix" was originally a four minute film (about average for 1905). But much of the film has been lost and only a little over a minute remains of the original...unfortunately not too uncommon with old silent films.

The film is like a huge number of Georges Méliès' films...he stars in it as a magician and operates on a stage. It looks much like at least a hundred of his films. He brings out a giant die and spins it on a table. Soon it grows and expands and out pops a woman...and the film ends.

Not much more to say about this one other than it's just a snippet.

The Magic Dice (Melies ) Fragment

Magic Dice, The (1905)

Fragment only

aka Le Phénix ou le coffret de cristal

I'm really not sure how long this Melies film was suppose to last but we get about 90-seconds worth of it on the wonderful Flicker Alley set. The storyline is pretty simple as a magician (played by Melies) turns a dice into a much larger one and then does a few more tricks to it to make it spin around on its own. That's pretty much the only thing we get here but I found the special effects to hold up quite well with the jump cuts not being nearly as noticeable as in many of his films.

Not So Magical Dice

One die is put on a table. It is small and then it becomes large. Then it turns into some flowers with a woman inside a kind of bouquet. This was not up to the standards. I would imagine that since this appears to be a fragment, there was more to this. Alas, not all film is still with us. Melies did so much more than this with just about every film, even at the beginning.
