A moment of silence, please, for “This Is Spinal Tap,” as that satire formally abdicates its title as the best and truest movie ever made about what it’s like to be in a rock ‘n’ roll band. There was something wonderful, silly and sad about how, up until now, musicians had to look to the fabricated saga of an unabashedly terrible group to be able to say, “Yes, this is our story.” Heaven knows there’ve been other fictional tales that tried to pull off that same kind of Everyband story while treating rock with a modicum of dignity, too — some with a bit of success (“That Thing You Do!”), others not so much so (David Chase’s “Not Fade Away”). And we’ve seen our share of rock documentaries that brilliantly captured an artist at a singular moment in time, and/or looked to unwrap a riddle wrapped...

Julia Ducournau’s Titane has joined the ranks of Wild Bunch, Filippo Meneghetti’s Two Of Us smiles favourably on Doc & Film, Marco Dutra goes to Indie Sales and Pulsar Content takes flight. With just two days to go until the close of the 44th Toronto International Film Festival and its intense, informal market (which a great number of professionals travelled to straight after the 76th Venice Film Festival), French international sales agents are slowly returning to Paris for a brief interval, before the 67th San Sebastian Film Festival (running 20-28 September) kicks off, leaving time to take stock of the major announcements made during the past two weeks. For starters, Wild Bunch International (the new entity launched at the beginning of July by Vincent Maraval) announced the sensational arrival of Titane in its line-up, which will be young French filmmaker Julia Ducournau’s second feature film after Raw (the star attraction.
There are countless real-life cases in regional towns all over the world of mature male and female couples in communities unaware that what passes for friendship is actually a long-term committed gay relationship. A variation on that scenario forms the heart of Filippo Meneghetti's terrific debut feature, Two of Us. Driven by a powerhouse, impassioned performance from Barbara Sukowa and one of contrastingly delicate brushstrokes by Comedie-Francaise veteran Martine Chevallier, the drama begins as a gentle love story and then takes a series of unpredictable turns as the clandestine life partners are separated by unfortunate circumstance.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to the romance-drama “Two of Us,” the feature directorial debut of France-based Italian filmmaker Filippo Meneghetti.
Magnolia is planning a theatrical release early next year. The films follows two older women, played by Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier, who live across the hall from each other in the same apartment building but have kept their romance hidden for decades.
The film held its world premiere as part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery program. Variety’s Mark Keizer said in his review that the film is “an affirmation of our universal desire for emotional intimacy and how the right connection can overcome all social and physical limitations. The fact that the relationship is between two lesbians well into their retirement years only makes the film even more quietly groundbreaking.”
“Two of Us” was written by Meneghetti, Malysone Bovorasmy and Florence Vignon.

Neither a hot-blooded tale of sexual discovery like 2013 Palme d’or winner “Blue Is the Warmest Color” nor a coolly alluring bauble like Todd Haynes’ “Carol,” Italian director Filippo Meneghetti’s debut feature “Two of Us” is an entirely unique and uniquely vital lesbian love story. The tale of two older women whose decades-long secret relationship is threatened after tragedy strikes covers emotional and thematic ground that transcends the sexual preferences of the two main characters.

Louis Tomlinson’s latest solo offering is the nineties rock-inspired “Kill My Mind.” The track marks the former One Direction singer’s second new single this year, following March’s “Two of Us.”
On “Kill My Mind,” Tomlinson is having a tumultuous romance with someone who has a tight grip on his heart. “You’re a nightmare on the dance floor/And you hate me, and I want more,” he sings on the opening verse against a crunchy guitar riff. “You’re a total distraction/While I’m waiting for your reaction.

So what’s the final Beatles album? Abbey Road or Let It Be? If you’re a Beatles fan, you’ve had at least one chemically-assisted late-night argument about this (because that’s what we do). Abbey Road was the last they recorded, but Let It Be was the last they released. So did the greatest band ever bid farewell with “Her Majesty” or “Get Back”? Does the story end with Paul saying, “Someday I’m gonna make her mine,” or John saying, “I hope we passed the audition”? It...

It's been two years since Louis Tomlinson's mom, Johannah Deakin, passed away, but the 27-year-old singer is keeping her memory alive. "People say writing is a part of therapy and in a way, I feel like I'd been avoiding writing this song because I knew I only had one chance to get it right. I don't mean to be too soppy about it, but if 'Two of Us' can help just one other person who's going through the tough time that I went through, then that would make me really happy." Ari Lennox, the lone R&B singer signed to rapper J. Cole’s Dreamville Records, struggles to stop reminiscing about her ex in the new video for “Whipped Cream.”
“Whipped Cream” is built around a wonderfully slowed sample of “Two of Us,” a luscious, falsetto-smeared record from the funk group Cameo. On top of this bass-heavy foundation, Lennox sings frustrated, lovelorn lines: “You’ve been everywhere, wish I didn’t care.” As the song progresses, Lennox begins to interrogate memories of her past relationship, wondering if the whole thing was a lie from the start.

In the earliest days of The Beatles, the fact that John Lennon and Paul McCartney began composing their own material as opposed to using songs provided by other songwriters was highly unusual. In fact, at the time — the early 1960s — it simply wasn't done. Undoubtedly in the beginning it was probably seen more as an oddity rather than an indication of the duo ultimately being credited as one of the great songwriting teams of all time. "It wasn't the norm," Bill Harry, editor of Liverpool's Mersey Beat, the first and most recognized newspaper devoted to the local music scene, and lifelong friend of The Beatles, explains in an exclusive interview. "In America you have the Brill Building and things like that, with professional songwriters like Carole King and different people. That was the situation. The songwriters wrote the songs and the artists were given songs by the songwriters. It...

To many, the name Claude Berri doesn’t mean all that much. Studied cinephiles may recognize the name as the one attached to the directing credit of the underrated classic Jean de Florette, while others may simply be ignorant to the director’s filmography completely. However, with an Oscar, 21 directed-by films and nearly 60 producing credits to the French filmmaker’s name, there is a treasure trove of motion pictures just waiting to be rediscovered. And thankfully that appears to be happening.
As part of the Quad Cinema’s A Very Berri Christmas retrospective, Cohen Films is premiering a new, 50th Anniversary restoration of one of Berri’s most beloved works, The Two Of Us. An autobiographical work, this marked Berri’s directorial debut, and stars Alain Cohen as Claude, a young boy caught in the middle of World War II. It’s been 20 years since Will Smith made Ray-Ban sunglasses and black suits look good in Men in Black, the sci-fi action film about secret agents who track and supervise extraterrestrial lifeforms on Earth.
“July 4th weekend. That’s my weekend,” Smith told Et in 1997 on the set of the music video for the film’s theme song, “Men in Black.” The film’s release was still a couple of months away, but Smith had the fullest confidence that the comic book adaptation would be a success. After all, the actor did lead the ensemble fight against aliens in Independence Day, which made over $817 million worldwide the year before.
While Smith’s proclamation was supported by a $589 million worldwide box office haul, becoming the second-highest grossing film of the year, perhaps there was more pressure on the song. Sure, it was a good promotional tool for the film, but it was also Smith’s first solo record...

Ash vs Evil Dead, Season 1, Episode 9, “Bound In Flesh”
Written by Rob Wright
Directed by Tony Tilse
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
There’s no time for grief or reflection on the latest episode of Ash vs Evil Dead, “Bound In Flesh.” Last week featured a somewhat shocking moment when Jill Marie Jones’ series regular Amanda Fisher found herself on the wrong end of some deer antlers. Amanda’s death was framed in a particularly brutal, mournful way, which makes the fast-paced, goofball tone of this week’s episode all the more jarring.
Ash (Bruce Campbell) has no time to grieve Amanda, nor does he even have time to deal with his newly born evil doppelgänger, because before the opening title card has splashed across the screen, Bad Ash is dead, blown away by Kelly and Pablo after an amusing back-and-forth to determine who is the real Ash.

Their mother's sudden sickness gives Kuenphen the opportunity to explore the world outside the village while Jamyang must stay home to weave, cook and get married- a fate she is not willing to accept without a fight.
The self-financed film was shot on location in the Himalayan mountains with a cast of local highland village people and a Bhutanese crew including DoP Leki Dorji, none of whom had worked on a feature. Jill Bilock is the editor.

You know when your restaurant table has a wobbly leg and the waiter promises to fix it, but no amount of wadded-up napkins or coasters or old baguette can seem to even things out? That’s kind of how I felt about most of the performances from Night 3 of The Voice‘s Season 7 Blind Auditions.

Vernon Kay has said that he would be an "idiot" to turn down the Strictly Come Dancing job.
The TV presenter spoke of the chances of co-hosting the BBC competition alongside wife Tess Daly, following Sir Bruce Forsyth's retirement.
"That question always makes me laugh," Kay told The Mirror. "When someone says to you, 'Would you like to co-host the most successful show on British television at the moment?', who is going to say no?
"What idiot is going to turn around and say, 'You know what, I do not want to host a Saturday night BBC primetime show that averages 11.5 million viewers a week'."
Kay and Daly previously hosted BBC One's celebrity talent show Just the Two of Us in 2006 and 2007.
"It would be great to work with Tess again," he continued. "It's such a good laugh - the relationship on screen is exactly the same as it is at home.

For anybody who did not live through the peak of MTV’s Total Request Live, it’s difficult to understand just how important that show was to pop culture. Every day after school, Trl host Carson Daly would not only unveil the 10 most-requested videos of the day, but he would also interview movie stars, call his celebrity friends, and facilitate awkward exchanges between unlikely bedfellows. Before everybody cared about tween culture, Trl was the center of that universe.

Many people credit Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody as being the first ever pop music video – but with various musical performances in their five feature films, The Beatles may well beg to differ.
The celebrated four piece (you may have heard of them) John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, would perform tracks from their latest album within their feature films – not to drive the story forward, and without any dialogue intertwined. Here we count down the top 10 performances from the Liverpudlian quartet, between their films A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine and Let it Be.

What is notable about the performance of Two of Us in their final feature film Let it Be, is its simplicity, as the band merely play, in what appears to be an empty room. No jokes and no screaming teenage fans, just...

Hey gang, we’re back! This is my favorite episode of Pretty Little Liars yet (of the two I’ve seen) and I think it’s all because this episode features a parrot and a dojo. Those two things speak to me. Anyway, let’s get down to it.
The girls are noshing at a coffee house named after a Hitchcock film.Where I grew up in Delaware we just had a place called the Brew-ha-ha. Alas for me…
Hannah (or Hanna? Who is she supposed to be? Saoirse Ronan?) is worried about her mom. The girls are arguing over who the lady in the long black veil was. Also, they are still arguing over whether or not Allison is dead or not. You would think a good autopsy would straighten that all out.
Creepy Mona shows up and whines about not being cool enough to join their girl gang.
