Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.
The octogenarian learnt the basics of music from his father, the renowned trumpeteer of his time, Ramprasad ‘Babaji’ Sharma. He then aced the violin under the guidance of the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves, whom he went on to immortalise in the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’, which was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (who also contributed to the vocals) in the 1977 film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.
Pyarelal teamed up with Laxmikant Kudalkar and they worked in more than 750 Hindi films between 1963 to 1998. They collaborated with the biggest names of the industry, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra.

Singer Lata Mangeshkar, dubbed Nightingale of India, turns 90 on Sept. 28 and in honor of the woman who made the Guinness Book of World Records for 25,000 songs recorded we at Variety chose 25 of our favorite tunes from Bollywood. There were many more we could choose, including duets with Hemant Kumar or Mohammed Rafi but we didn’t want the list to become too unwieldy. Mangeshkar started singing professionally at age 14 and Bollywood actresses from the 1940s to 2000s have lip synced to her on screen. Acting legend Dilip Kumar once said of her: “The way the fragrance of a flower has no color, a flowing spring or cool breezes belong to no country, the smile of an innocent child has no religion, similarly Lata Mangekshar’s voice is a miracle of nature’s creativity.”

Welcome to the Floribama Shore, where the sun always shines, alcohol is constantly flowing and everyone just wants to have a good time. The eight housemates on the new MTV series are no different, each of them hoping Florida’s Panama City Beach will give them the summer of their lives.
On Monday’s two-hour premiere, the castmates didn’t have a duck phone, smush room or Gtl routine, but Aimee, Candace, Codi, Gus, Jeremiah, Kirk, Kortni and Nilsa proved they can get just as crazy as their Jersey Shore predecessors — with a sprinkling of Southern charm. Unlike Snooki and co.

Manoj Kumar is all set to return to direction with a film called DNA Report. This would be Kumar's first directorial venture since the badly-received Clerk in 1989. Informs the veteran director, "I haven't been able to make any film because of my back problem. But now my script is ready. It's a film called DNA Report. It's about how a man becomes a victim of a DNA test when he has never had any emotional or physical relationship with a woman. Then how does the DNA report say he's the father of the woman's child? This is a subject I've never been into." Says Manoj Kumar regretfully, "I don't have the comfort of working with Manoj Kumar the actor anymore. He is capable of telling home truths in the most understated manner. So I've to select from the stars today. It's an expensive film. I have zeroed in on an actor.

At 71, Pyarelal Sharma has the enthusiasm of a musical newbie. He remembers his late partner without any false melodrama. "We were like one, closer than brothers, so no one can even begin to understand our bond,'' he says. Not many are aware that till Laxmikant suggested that they team up as a duo in films, Pyarelal's ambition was to become a famous musician from India in Western music abroad, like his close friend Zubin Mehta. After Laxmikant passed away in 1998, the maestro (described by Laxmikant as "the only complete music director in Hindi cinema'' who could read and write Indian and Western notations, compose, arrange, conduct and record songs and knew all instruments like the back of his hand) fought back against bad times. "Even today, I would not mind doing films if they are from A-list setups. Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and Mahesh Bhatt keep talking about working together again,...

In a year that boasted some huge family friendly blockbusters and multiple films from some of the biggest stars, it was pretty easy for smaller films with tiny budgets, no big name stars or controversial subjects to fly a little under the radar. Here are ten of the best films that may have been appreciated by the critics, but failed to catch fire at the box office.
10. Soundtrack
Based on British “mockumentary” It’s All Gone Pete Tong, Soundtrack takes a premise that was a source of humour in the original film – a superstar DJ going deaf – and turns it into a touching, surprisingly subtly handled story of a man overcoming his demons and his disability. With a fantastic soundtrack (naturally!), as well as some inventive storytelling, Soundtrack has sex, drugs and rock’n'roll covered, as well as a compelling performance in the lead role from Rajeev Khandelwal.

On one of our flights I had the pleasure of flying the great comedian Asrani. We hit it off well right from the outset, one of the reasons being our common surname. So naturally we started digging into our respective family trees, and to my astonishment we turned out to be ?distantly- related cousins?. I said ?Govardhan (his first name) you are a star comedian! I am really proud to be your cousin ?to which he replied ?Arre don?t call me Govardhan, everyone calls me Asrani, you also call me that only.?

Balaji Entertainment’s Shor In The City faced serious issues with the censor board regarding certification
Private screenings for the Bollywood core circuit is a common practice mostly done to entertain feedback. However, Shor In The City’s private screenings proved troublesome for the team. The film was being shown without the censor board certificate, and some insider leaked the news to the censor board.

According to a source, “The censor board up until Monday afternoon refused to issue the certificate and sent Balaji a show cause notice questioning the production house about the screenings.” However, Balaji was clever enough to control the situation and sent someone personally to the censor board to sort out the matter. Fortunately, the certificate was issued on Monday. Tanuj Garg, CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures, briefly commented, ?We have received the censor certificate.

After Love Sex Aur Dhoka, Balaji's next, Shor In The City, takes reality a step further by roping in real dancers for a sequence in the film.
One of the scenes required Tusshar Kapoor, Nikhil Dwivedi and Pitabash Tripathy to visit a dance bar and directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna Dk wanted the scene to be as authentic as possible. In fact, the makers have gone all out with the authentic touch since the film is based on stories from articles that have headlined the city newspapers in recent years.
"Our film is a gritty portrayal of the city. And what better than picking up ideas from newspapers? So for example, a guy coming to Mumbai for the first time and getting robbed in a funny way, is a part of the film. Although everything has been fictionalised, the core incidents did take place," remarks Krishna.
