Broonzy live in a club
happytrigger-64-3905177 February 2022
This is an important documentary, the great folk and blues singer Big Bill Broonzy enters a crypted club in Belgium and plays a few titles (John Henry, with his staccato technique). Lot of atmospheric expressionist cinematography like in a film noir, we may think of "Razzia sur la chnouf" with the actress Patricia Karim watching Broonzy singing and playing guitar, she seems dizzy like a girl in a club in Razzia.... Apparently not in the documentary, but on the DVD I have, following this documentary are some sequences of Broonzy in front of his house playing and singing tunes with the same kindness that characterized him. The day after, he went to hospital where he died. He was around 60, his birth date isn't sure. He has influenced so many singers and guitarists, like Ray Davies, Éric Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Jerry Garcia,... Big Bill Broonzy has recorded 300 songs from 1927 to his death. I just love his work with Washboard Sam in 1953.
