Spring Breakers - Opening Sequence
Having been at Tiff this month, attempting to select favorite scenes without going entirely overboard– well, it may not exactly be as drastic as Sophie’s choice, but that is the first label that comes to mind. Spring Breakers is one of many very strong showings from Toronto this year, and certainly one of the most talked-about here at Sound on Sight. I might provide greater variety to go with one of De Palma’s masterful sequences in Passion or one chapter from the genius 101 of Kiarostami’s Like Someone in Love, and so on and so forth, but I would be lying if I did not say one scene that has stuck with me the most is the opening of Korine’s simultaneously hilarious and terrifying latest. The much-discussed slow motion, booze-soaked and bikini-clad (or, really, not clad at all) introduction to the world...

Cross another one off the list of potential competitors for the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars": One-time Gop presidential contender Herman Cain won't appear on the ABC series. Cain's executive assistant, Lisa Reichert tells the Atlantic Journal-Constitution Cain was approached by "DWTS" producers, but squashed the idea of participating. "He can't dance in an eight-count. He can only dance in a nine-count," Reichert said, referring to Cain's famous 9-9-9 plan. Mitt Romney's rivals for the Republican presidential nomination have kept "The Daily Show" too busy to focus much on the former Massachusetts governor in recent weeks -- but that changed Thursday. After a tense interview in which Fox News' Bret Baier pressed Romney on his dueling stances on several major campaign issues, Jon Stewart said Romney, like Herman Cain, is haunted by someone from his past. Stephen Colbert is the self-proclaimed "most famous Catholic on television" and "basically the pope of basic cable" -- so it fell to him to weigh in on a host of religious issues on Tuesday's show. Among them: a vodka billboard that promised "Christmas Quality, Hanukkah Pricing." Complaints from the Anti-Defamation League led to the ad's removal. Also read: Jon Stewart: Herman Cain is Lying -- or Terrible at Closing the Deal But for the last word, we turn of course to Colbert -- who explains why the ad was potentially offensive not just...

Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed that his plans to direct At The Mountains of Madness, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Antarctic horror tale for Universal Pictures, have collapsed.
He will instead helm the monster movie Pacific Rim, for Legendary Pictures.
At The Mountains of Madness was scheduled to begin filming in 3D in June, with Tom Cruise and Ron Perlman attached to star and James Cameron on board as a producer.
But Universal studio chiefs were worried about the risks of a $150million, adult-rated horror film because they were uncertain it would make the $500million gross needed for it to be a profitable venture. So del Toro left the project.
The filmmaker - who previously quit The Hobbit over production delays - has now spoken about what happened and I've also shared my own thoughts on this sorry saga, which is yet another setback for del Toro.

The news that Guillermo del Toro's next film won't be At the Mountains of Madness for Universal still stings. We're all pretty heartbroken to be honest. So what exactly happened?
In an exclusive interview with Deadline del Toro himself shed some light on the subject. Dig on some excerpts below, and hit up that link for the whole enchilada.
On casting Tom Cruise ...
"Closing Tom’s deal was in [Universal's] hands. He was without a doubt, absolutely in favor of being in the movie. We met extensively, both in Canada and the U.S., dozens of times. Final polishes of the screenplay met with his approval. Closing the deal is not something that was in my hands. They needed to close it corporately."
On the R rating ...
"I think the R should be worn like a badge of merit in promoting the movie. To say, this is not a gory movie,...

Legendary Pictures have announced that Guillermo del Toro is directing 'Pacific Rim,' as his next film, this is after Universal refused to fund his adaption of 'Mountains Of Madness.
The film has already entered pre-production and will begin principal photography in September 2011. Pacific Rim will be released during summer 2013 and will be produced by Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni for Legendary Pictures and Guillermo del Toro.
Stated Guillermo del Toro: "We started developing Pac Rim a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons. We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make. We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me."The film is a science fiction treatment by Travis Beacham...

As we reported earlier, Guillermo Del Toro is officially directing Pacific Rim for Legendary Pictures instead of At The Mountain's of Madness. Rim is a monster movie with a PG-13 rating with a script written by Travis Beacham. Since Madness fell apart there have been tons of fan speculation and some great debate. My personal favorite piece is by Drew at HitFix, which is worth a read.
Del Toro shared his thoughts and plans for the project in an interview today with Deadline. Good news for fans is that the project based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft is not dead, the director hopes to land at another studio.
There was a lot of speculation that the film had fallen apart because Tom Cruise was not locked in to star and that Universal would not pony up the $150 million price tag for the film. Here is what Del Toro had to say in response:

Well, what happened? On Monday, there were utter confusion on the state of the Unversal Pictures’ “At The Mountains of Madness” project and director Guillermo Del Toro jumped on board to helm Legendary Pictures’ “Pacific Rim” instead. To get the real story, it should come from Del Toro himself. First, his personal press release officially confirmed taking the job for “Pacific Rim.” “We started developing Pac Rim a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons. We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make,” said Del Toro in a press release. “We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync.
