No Sign Of Silver Skates
Alas for dreams of Hans Brincker! It doesn't often get cold enough in Holland for the canals to freeze solid enough to walk on. They did in the winter of 1917, though, and Willy Mullins went out to shoot images all over the country, from the ice crusting up harbors, to wind-powered sledges on the Zuider Zee, to a multi-city skating race.
Coen de Kooning won the race that year, more than a hundred years ago. While the First World War raged throughout the rest of Europe, Holland was one of a few blessed spots of peace. This film offered a hope of peace. It's in very good shape, available on the Eye Institute's YouTube site, mostly tinted blue.... not for night, but for the cold that made it such a pleasure.
