Globo decided to launch O Bem-Amado series as a sequel of the famous homonymous telenovela of 1973, written by Dias Gomes and based on his theatrical play "Odorico, Well-Beloved, and the Mysteries of Love and Death", staged for the first time in 1969

O Bem-Amado is the longest running series produced by Globol, it remained on air for five seasons, from 1980 to 1984. In the first three years, new episodes were aired on a weekly basis, starting 1983 new episodes were demonstrated once per monts
For two consecutive years, in 1980 and 1981, O Bem-Amado was named by the APCA (São Paulo Association of Art Critics) the best TV series of the year. In 1983, the series won the association's Grand Prix of Critics
