The first time I interviewed Valgur it was in their Mexico City living room, surrounded by piles of broken synthesizers. It was 2019 and the band’s debut album Zapandú was gaining underground buzz for its unusual collage of electronic sounds and esoteric motifs, which included eerie vampire aesthetics and dreamy Zapotec poetry. But underneath their otherworldly creations, universally human questions of religion, family, and indigenous identity have always reigned supreme.

The Weeknd is blasting Rolling Stone yet again.
In the “Starboy” singer’s June cover story in Vanity Fair, he addresses the music magazine’s March report detailing allegations of turmoil on the set of his upcoming show “The Idol”. Rolling Stone‘s story alleged delays, reshoots and a blown $54 million-plus budget contributed to the behind-the-scenes drama. They also called the HBO drama series “twisted ‘torture porn’” that had gone “wildly, disgustingly off the rails.”
Hours after the story was published, The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, took to social media to upload a clip of himself as his “Idol” character, Tedros, ridiculing the magazine as irrelevant.
“I thought the article was ridiculous,” the actor tells Vanity Fair of the Rs story. “I wanted to give a ridiculous response to it.”
Tesfaye adds that Rolling Stones‘ story was an indictment of his real-life character, specifically the questions of consent and misogyny...

Patty Jenkins is one of the most exciting filmmakers working in superhero blockbusters at the moment. After helming Wonder Woman (2017), her and Gal Gadot’s follow-up, Wonder Woman 1984, became an instant must-see. It’s all the more impressive considering her past brush with the superhero genre… and how she avoided directing what is widely considered one of the worst Marvel Studios movies, Thor: The Dark World.
Previously tapped for that gig in 2011, Jenkins would have been the first woman director to helm a superhero movie for the studio, but it was not to be. Soon dropping out of the project over reported “creative differences,” Thor: The Dark World went on to be directed by Game of Thrones’ Alan Taylor and released to a generally apathetic reception. Even the filmmakers behind the movie appear lukewarm to it, hence Taika Waititi’s sequel, Thor: Ragnarok, slaughtering or ignoring most of the previous movies’ original cast.

Nasa astronaut Chris Hadfield has been to space three times, has participated in two space walks, and has served as the commander of the International Space Station. Hadfield joined Vanity Fair this week to review space films such as Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” James Gray’s “Ad Astra,” and Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” but no movie is the object of the astronaut’s scorn as much as Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity.” Hadfield admits Cuarón’s 2013 Oscar winner boasts great visual effects and a magnificent depiction of a space walk in its opening scene, but that’s about it when it comes to praise. Much of “Gravity” is “so far from reality that I want to turn my head,” Hadfield says in the video below.
Hadfield’s first major criticism is how extremely “Gravity” violates the laws of physics. Take the scene where a satellite crashes into the International Space Station.

An interview this morning on MSNBC about the British royal family took a bizarre turn when a guest referred to Meghan Markle as “five clicks up from trailer trash.”
The video, which has gone viral, showed journalist Victoria Mather being interviewed from NBC’s London bureau about the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry’s return to the U.K. after their decision to step back from royal duties.
Mather told anchor Lindsey Reiser that the British public had soured on former Suits actress Meghan because she tried to “disrespect” Queen Elizabeth II.
“I think what has really, really upset the British public is that Meghan Markle, who many people consider as only, you know, five clicks up from trailer trash, has actually tried to disrespect the queen,” Mather said. “And the queen is the most respected person, most respected woman, in the world.”
Reiser appeared perplexed by her comments and quickly ended the interview.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out.”]
Rian Johnson reveals in a new video interview with Vanity Fair an interesting mandate Apple has on movie productions: Bad guys and villain characters in films are not allowed to be seen using iPhones. The reveal was made as Johnson was breaking down a pivotal scene from his most recent directorial effort, “Knives Out.” The scene is when Ransom Drysdale (Chris Evans) arrives at the Thrombey household and all of the main characters converge for the first time. Several characters are seen holding iPhones, including Jamie Lee Curtis’ Linda Drysdale, but the one person without an Apple product is Ransom. “Knives Out” viewers know that Ransom is the killer at the center of Johnson’s murder mystery, which means the character was prohibited from being featured in “Knives Out” with an iPhone.
“I don’t know if I should say this or not,” Johnson says in the Vanity Fair video.

People who watch hundreds and thousands of films tend to pick up on certain details that reveal things about characters not explicitly mentioned. Even so, Knives Out director Rian Johnson has revealed one thing that might be new information even to the most seasoned movie viewer. And that’s that you’ll never see a villain use an iPhone.
The revelation came early in a video for Vanity Fair where Johnson breaks down a scene from his demented murder mystery, one at the halfway point that sees his eclectic and impressive ensemble cast together as the family of suspects gather for the reading of the will of their deceased patriarch. Johnson’s comment on the professionalism of the props department establishing what time should be visible on a phone’s screen led to the offhand revelation.

Disney and Apple are both launching their own streaming services come November, but Disney CEO Bob Iger says the two companies weren’t always on competing paths.
In an excerpt from his autobiography published Wednesday in Vanity Fair, Iger revealed that Disney and Apple likely would have merged if Steve Jobs hadn’t died in 2011. “I believe that if Steve were still alive, we would have combined our companies, or at least discussed the possibility very seriously,” Iger wrote.
The excerpt comes from his new book “The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons From 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company,” which details Iger’s close relationship with Apple co-founder Jobs in addition to the breakdown of relations between Disney and Apple prior to Iger’s leadership position. According to Iger, previous CEO Michael Eisner effectively ruined the company’s relationship with Jobs by destroying Pixar’s partnership with Disney.

Joker subsequently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday night and at both screenings, the movie was met with praise from critics. And while Phoenix was applauded for his “impressive” performance, the film received some backlash for its depictions of violence.

You know what they say: "Great minds think alike." Zendaya and Michael B. Jordan proved this to be true after the 23-year-old actress attended a New York Fashion Week party on Friday and wore the same suit the 32-year-old actor wore to an Oscars party earlier this year. The Euphoria star hit the red carpet at Harper's Bazaar's Icons party in a gray Berluti suit—the same suit the Creed star wore to Vanity Fair's Oscar party back in February. Fans immediately picked up on the fashion flashback. Even Zendaya's stylist, Law Roach, couldn't resist comparing the two looks. "Who you got Z or B???? wearing @berluti," he wrote on Instagram. A year and a half after the release of “Black Panther,” people are still talking about how the Ryan Coogler-directed Marvel movie smashed box office expectations. Star Lupita Nyong’o has her own theories about why the film, which grossed $1.347 billion in global box office, was more of a commercial success than Hollywood thought it would be — and it has to do with avoiding using “the struggle through having dark skin” as “clickbait.”
“In ‘Black Panther,’ I felt that the African experience was allowed to exist aspirationally,” Nyong’o said in Vanity Fair’s October cover story. “I think it’s more common in America to hear of the struggle of black people than it is to hear of the success. It’s more of a sensation to have a headline about a struggle, you know? The struggle through having dark skin is clickbait. So when ‘Black Panther’ came...

Critics are raving for Warner Bros. latest comic book installment.
Todd Phillip’s “Joker” opened Saturday at the Venice Film Festival to effervescent reviews, with many critics highlighting an Oscar-worthy appearance from star Joaquin Phoenix. Variety‘s own Owen Gleiberman praised Phoenix’s performance, emphasizing his physical acting and emotional control:
“He appears to have lost weight for the role, so that his ribs and shoulder blades protrude, and the leanness burns his face down to its expressive essence: black eyebrows, sallow cheeks sunk in gloom, a mouth so rubbery it seems to be snarking at the very notion of expression, all set off by a greasy mop of hair,” he wrote. “Phoenix is playing a geek with an unhinged mind, yet he’s so controlled that he’s mesmerizing. He stays true to the desperate logic of Arthur’s unhappiness.”

“The Hangover” director Todd Phillips’ revisionist take on the beginnings of the titular Dceu villain, “Joker,” has finally world-premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and the first takes are all over the place. In his review, IndieWire critic David Ehrlich deemed the Joaquin Phoenix-starring thriller as “potentially toxic,” indebted to such incel origin stories as “Taxi Driver.”
However, Phillips’ film apparently lacks the nuance or sensitivity required of such a project in an age of rampant Reddit trollism — especially when it comes to superhero movies, which attract knives-out fanbases ready to go for the jugular (and probably in the comments section of this post). Reactions to the film bode a long season of uncomfortable discourse.
Praise is already being heaped on Phoenix’s hotly anticipated, unhinged turn as a homicidal narcissist, with “a hypnotic and inimitable performance [that] would feel completely new if it didn’t borrow so much from his past work,...

Watch Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom Grill Each Other About Hannah Montana, Taylor Swift and More
Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom are taking a lie detector test! In a new video for Vanity Fair, posted on YouTube Friday, the Carnival Row co-stars grill each other about everything from pop music and Hannah Montana to Rihanna and Taylor Swift. The video shows Bloom taking on the lie detector first, answering questions from Delevingne, who asks him about the Hannah Montana song, "The Best of Both Worlds." When asked whether it's ever been brought to his attention that he's "name-dropped" in the song, Bloom replies, "No." A clip from the song is then played, and, to Bloom's surprise, his name is mentioned. "Oh my God!" Bloom...

“I don’t separate the man from the art.” So said Lucrecia Martel, the Argentine filmmaker and president of this year’s Venice Film Festival jury, when asked at a press conference about “J’Accuse (An Officer and a Spy),” the new Roman Polanski film. Martel said she wouldn’t attend a gala dinner in honor of the movie, but staunchly defended the Venice Film Festival’s decision to program it. Nevertheless, what she articulated touched a nerve. In general, I tend to be a die-hard believer in separating the man from the art. But Roman Polanski has made it all but impossible to do so with “An Officer and a Spy.”

If the first reviews coming out of the Venice Film Festival for Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama “Marriage Story” are to be believed, then the fall movie season has its first bonafide Oscar contender. The Netflix release premiered in competition to instant awards buzz for writer-director Baumbach and his two leading actors, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. IndieWire’s chief critic Eric Kohn calls the movie an “astonishing showcase” for the performers in his A- review, writing the actors deliver “devastating performances” as a couple going through a divorce after 10 years of marriage.
Owen Gleiberman of Variety agrees, adding in his review, “At once funny, scalding, and stirring, built around two bravura performances of incredible sharpness and humanity, ‘Marriage Story’ is the work of a major film artist.”
Vanity Fair film critic Richard Lawson writes Driver and Johansson have “major awards potential,” a sentiment ScreenDaily critic Fionnuala Halligan agrees with.

Judd Apatow has known Roseanne Barr for decades, and as such appears less quick to condemn her than many of his contemporaries. A tweet from the actress and comedienne led to the cancelation of her revived sitcom “Roseanne” last month despite massive ratings, with sympathy for Barr in short supply from most corners. Not Apatow: “I think you have a person who’s in a moment of success and maybe that’s uncomfortable for her, and whatever urges she has to be rebellious have overtaken her in some way,” he tells Vanity Fair in a new interview.
“I haven’t spoken to her recently to know where her head’s at generally, but I see it more as someone who’s crying out for help than someone who’s a hateful person … for the most part, I hope she’s okay and I feel bad for people who got hurt in that.

Fans have a year before the final season of Game of Thrones begins, but for the cast, the end is already here. On Sunday, the Mother of Dragons herself, Emilia Clarke, posted an emotional goodbye that paid tribute to the show's well-known filming location in Northern Ireland as well as the HBO fantasy series itself. The actress had attended the London stop of Beyoncé and Jay Z's Otr II Tour on Friday before heading back to Ireland, where things got real.

Johnny Depp’s bad boy persona used to help sell the movies he made. He was a real life Capt. Jack Sparrow, who could hit the press circuit armed with a few rococo anecdotes, delivered with a rock ‘n roll edge in between drags of freshly rolled cigarettes. His act was charming and his mystique undeniable.
No longer. A new Rolling Stone profile of the actor compares Depp’s current, debauched existence to Elvis’s last, drug-fueled days. It left readers and people in Hollywood alarmed with its portrayal of Depp, a 55-year-old man, drinking goblet after goblet of vintage red wine, smoking hash, and, it is heavily implied, partaking in even stronger substances, all while cordoned off in a gated mansion that leaves him cut off from reality.
Studios still in business with the actor were poring over the profile this morning, assessing what — if any — fallout there would be from the piece.

Remember that one time Leonardo DiCaprio brought a girlfriend as his date to the Oscars? Yeah, we almost didn't either. But it really happened! The Hollywood heartthrob was dating supermodel Gisele Bündchen when he received a best actor nomination for his role in The Aviator back in 2005. Instead of bringing his mom, Irmelin (or his Bff Kate Winslet), as he normally does, he brought Gisele. Dressed in a white strapless Dior gown, Gisele was all smiles as she practically floated down the red carpet on Leo's arm. Unfortunately, Leo went home without an award that night - as we all know, he didn't end up winning his first Oscar until 2016.

Leo and Gisele dated on and off between 1999 and 2005, and while their split was reportedly amicable, Gisele was the one who called it quits. "We know what we had.

Lionsgate U.K. and Nevision are drilling into the simultaneously murky and glamorous world of the oil business in the Middle East in the 1970s. The British arm of the U.S. studio and the London-based indie are co-developing “Oil,” from Alan Whiting (“Kingdom”), Matthew Faulk (“Titanic: Blood and Steel”) and Mark Skeet (“Vanity Fair”).
The eight-part drama will be set in the Persian Gulf. It will blend the geopolitics of the oil business, the stories of the individuals concerned, and what happened in the compounds in which foreign executives and their families lived. Based on real historical events, the action will revolve around a British-American oil firm.
Lionsgate U.K.’s creative director, Steve November, said the setup offers the producers elements of period hit “Mad Men” and high-finance movie “The Wolf of Wall Street.” “This is the birth of the Emirates as we know it now, and at...

The U.S. remained the largest export market for British TV content with sales of £335M ($441M) across the 2016/17 year, according to a new report.
Total revenues from UK TV programming sales were estimated at £902m, according to the TV Exports report, published by British trade association Pact.
The U.S. was considerably larger than other markets with Australia, at £73M, and France, at £60M, coming in second and third.
Finished TV program sales is the major source of revenue, contributing £404M to the figures, however, sales to digital platforms has grown strongly, reaching £225M in 2016/17. Format sales contributed £37M and original commissions reached £133M, with the U.S. contributing £93M of this.
The top selling shows of the period included Sherlock, Planet Earth II, The Crown and Outlander. While Pact has annually put together export sales, given it changed its criteria this year, it’s tough to compare to previous years.

The expansion of the short form Emmy category to include five awards is a sign of the fast-paced times as content creators grow their offerings and established networks and broadcasters see the value in digital shorts as a way to build brands and keep audiences engaged.
Take, for example, NBC’s digital team, which recently submitted offshoot short-form content for three shows, “This Is Us,” “The Voice” and “Saturday Night Live” for Emmy consideration in short-form awards. NBC Digital executive vice president Rob Hayes says the goal of that content was to keep fans returning to the shows and build a bigger audience on social media.

We’ve all heard the rumors, but one man was there to witness it all. Old Hollywood stars had squeaky-clean images, but in reality their lives were just as real and raunchy as the stars of today.
