Short Animation Masterpiece

Garri Bardin presents us with another animation classic in this creative movie about a man made out of wire.

The movie begins in a metalinguistic fashion, with a roll of wire slowly uncoiling itself until becoming a man. He then begins to build things with the wire he has left. But soon his peace is broken by several kinds of invaders, and he needs to balance the wire he has left with his needs for privacy and protection of his private property.

I had never seen wire animated like this. Bardin creates very interesting shapes, and the appearance of the characters and scenarios keep changing from 3d to 2d without being neither of them. The man, the dog and the woman are all very expressive, and he also makes great use of light - which is hard, considering that most things in the movie are transparent and cast no shadows! A must see!

Pretty weak, also for its time

Warning: Spoilers
"Vykrutasy" or "The Coiling Prankster" is a Soviet 10-minute animated short film from 1988, so this one will have its 30th anniversary soon. The writer and director here is Garri Bardin, one of the most successful Russian-born filmmakers back then, especially in animation. One success would be for example that this film here won the short film category at the Cannes Film Festival back then and I must say I am baffled by this. I don't think it was a disastrous watch, but also far from a good one. The story was nothing really interesting and the animation was quite outdated for the late 1980s. Looks like it was a lot older actually. And it was weak to a point where it really made it difficult to understand what was going on, even if no Russian language was included here. or maybe because? All in all, I cannot really think of a single reason why you should watch this one or why this had such a success with awards bodies. I give it 2 stars out of 5 and I believe this is also still quite generous. Not recommended.
