Word of a remake of John Carpenter's 1986 bonkers action flick "Big Trouble in Little China" came out as early as 2015. The remake was set to star Dwayne Johnson, presumably playing Jack Burton, the character previously played by Kurt Russell. Johnson reportedly wanted John Carpenter to be involved in the remake, but the director was never officially invited to anything. "I only know what I read in the papers," he said. Carpenter has been famously indifferent to other filmmakers remaking his movies, once saying that he loves it when it happens, as he gets paid for not having to do anything. Three years later, in 2018, it was announced that the new "Big Trouble" would be a sequel and not a remake, but such definitions have become hazy in a nostalgia-driven marketplace. The film's producer, Hiram Garcia, referred to the new film as a "continuation," rather than a sequel. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

Kurt Russell and John Carpenter make a great team. The two first worked together on the TV movie "Elvis," and then went on to make "Escape From New York," "Escape From L.A.," "The Thing," and of course, "Big Trouble in Little China." "Big Trouble" isn't a horror movie or even your typical John Carpenter flick. It's a pulpy action-comedy that sees Russell playing buffoonish truck driver Jack Burton, who gets roped into becoming a very clumsy hero to fight a trio of ancient gods and an evil sorcerer. The movie is an absolute blast from beginning to end, and Russell is clearly having a lot of fun playing Burton, a character who thinks he's the hero when he's really more like a glorified sidekick to his friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun).
Russell and Carpenter worked together well over the years, with Russell seemingly bringing out the best in Carpenter and vice versa.

As Easter Sunday approaches this weekend, we thought we’d “die” your eggs a little a differently. That is, we’re on the great hidden treasure hunt for some of the most colorful and delicious horror movie Easter eggs found in some of our favorite titles. But here’s the thing. We aren’t talking about obscure cameos from people that are hard to miss, or even secretive foreshadowing within a single movie, a la the entire Final Destination franchise. Nor are we talking about mere verbal references to other horror movies. Rather, we’re interested in visual crossover clues found one horror movie that pay homage to another, found tucked away in the background or even hidden in plain sight. You see the distinction. Good. Hopefully you haven’t already seen what’s to follow. Happy holiday y’all, here’s our Top 10 Favorite Crossover Horror Movie Easter Eggs!

Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 film "The Addams Family," based on the New Yorker comic strips by Chas Addams and extrapolated from the 1964 sitcom of the same name, was a pop culture clarion call for aspiring young goths the world over. The Addams Family were a gaggle of murderous weirds who lived in a haunted mansion, kept a severed human hand as a pet, and regularly engaged in cute family games wherein they exhumed long-dead relatives. They loved blood, sex, and magic. It's possible they were immortal; the young Wednesday (Christina Ricci) regularly murdered her brother Pugsley (Jimmy Workman). Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) were sexually active to an enviable degree, perhaps standing as one of the healthiest, most sex-positive couples in movies at the time. They were full of zest and joie de vivre. Only they were obsessed with death, so perhaps the term should be joie de mourir.

The 1990s are regularly regarded as the era of the high-concept thriller. In the wake of eighties smashes like Jagged Edge and Fatal Attraction, audiences tended to flock to these kinds of movies, although it’s worth noting they quickly spun off into two different mini-genres. There was the erotic thriller genre, whose queen was definitely Sharon Stone, with movies like Basic Instinct and Sliver, but there was also the so-called yuppie thriller.
These movies often centred around upwardly mobile middle-class couples who wind up in the crosshairs of a maniac who wants to dismantle their lives. Fatal Attraction was arguably the first of these. Still, many more would follow, including Pacific Heights, which featured Michael Keaton in a memorably evil role, Bad Influence (with Rob Lowe), Internal Affairs (which revitalized Richard Gere’s career), Malice, and the great Single White Female. But, of the genre, one of the most effective was 1992’s Unlawful Entry,...

It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States at the time, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen.
Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo, with James Cagney showing off some good moves in the film Blood on the Sun,...

The Carpenter classic Lance is looking at with this one is the 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here) – a movie that’s so good, he couldn’t pick just one “best scene”. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters may owe its greatest debt not to Toho, nor even the previous entries in the Monster-Verse, such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island. No, the most important movie for the new show from Apple TV+ is Soldier. Yes, Soldier, the 1998 sci-flick directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
Because in Soldier, Kurt Russell played the same character as his son Wyatt, as the latter portrays the 11-year-old version of the lifelong warrior Todd 3465. The duo repeat that feat in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters by playing Lee Shaw at two points in the man’s life. The elder Russell plays Shaw in the present, as part of the research group Monarch, dealing with the revelation of monsters in 2014’s Godzilla. The younger Russell plays Shaw in the 1950s, connecting the series to the golden age of Kaiju cinema.

Steven Weisberg, a film editor whose career through the ’90s onward led him to collaborations with directors like Alfonso Cuarón, Barry Sonnenfeld and Barry Levinson, died Oct. 16 at the Motion Picture & Television Fund hospital in Woodland Hills, Calif. after several years of care for early onset Alzheimer’s. He was 68.
Weisberg’s death was confirmed by his ex-wife, Susan Ellicott.
Two of Cuarón’s early films, “Great Expectations” and “A Little Princess,” were edited by Weisberg. The two reunited for a foray into franchise filmmaking, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
Weisberg also had a knack for editing studio comedies, with his first major feature credit being Ben Stiller’s directorial debut, the 1996 thriller “The Cable Guy.” Other notable credits include a string of Barry Sonnenfeld projects — the short-lived 2001 live-action series “The Tick” and his features “Big Trouble” and “Men in Black II” — as well as “Permanent Midnight,...

Legendary director John Carpenter is currently doing the press rounds to promote his new unscripted TV series, John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (you can read our review at This Link), and during an interview with ComicBook.com he was asked which of his films he thinks would make for the best film-to-video game adaptation. His answer: the 1986 martial arts fantasy adventure Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here)!
Here’s the direct quote from Carpenter: “I think, maybe Big Trouble in Little China, it seems to me would be a fun video game and kick ass. There’s also, by the way, a Thing card game. I mean, there’s a lot of these games. There’s actually a They Live game. I don’t know that there would ever be a Prince of Darkness game. I don’t see that.“

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, 1988’s Night of the Demons is a perfect Halloween party movie; not merely because the plot involves a Halloween party, but it embodies the spirit of the holiday.
Director Kevin Tenney (Witchboard) and writer Joe Augustyn veer between creepy and campy throughout the 90-minute runtime. A playfully spooky atmosphere is immediately established by the Scooby Doo-esque animated credit sequence set to a bombastic synth theme by the director’s brother, Dennis Michael Tenney.
The plot follows a group of rowdy high schoolers to a deadly party at the infamous Hull House. As goth hostess Angela Franklin (Amelia Kinkade) explains, the abandoned abode is possessed rather than haunted: “The spirits living in a house possessed never existed in human form. They’ve only existed in spirit form. They’re pure evil. They’re demons.” A seance awakens the spirits, who start turning the partygoers into savage demons.

What do Allison Anders, John Cassavetes, and Alfred Hitchcock have in common? Aside from — in spite of? — being great directors, they’ve all made films that for whatever reason failed to land with the critics, the public, or both. But are their “failures” those of the filmmakers or of imagination on the part of the audience?
In the list of underrated movies by great directors that follows, IndieWire argues that often it’s the latter. These are films that were misunderstood — in several cases, by their own makers, which is part of what led to their public dismissal — or that never had the chance to be misunderstood because they were barely seen due to vagaries of timing and marketing. While they don’t necessarily represent the directors’ best work, they’re all better than their reputations and filled with pleasures characteristic of the filmmakers’ oeuvres.

John Carpenter has unleashed the latest film score reimagining from his upcoming album Anthology II (Movie Themes 1976-1988) with “69th St. Bridge” from 1981’s Escape from New York.
The composition memorably soundtracks a thrilling car chase sequence from the dystopian, Kurt Russell-starring action movie, which was co-written, directed, and scored by Carpenter. However, the new reworking still manages to squeeze even more tension into the mix with help from Carpenter’s go-to collaborators, his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies. Stream “69th St. Bridge” below.
Anthology II arrives on October 6th via Sacred Bones Records and features new takes on Carpenter’s music from films such as The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and They Live. In August, he shared the collection’s opening track, “Chariots of Pumpkins” from 1982’s Halloween III. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Carpenter’s first Anthology project dropped in 2017.

Fifteen years and a few largely forgotten side projects after the band’s disbandment in 2008, Be Your Own Pet have regrouped for Mommy. The album opens with “Worship the Whip,” an ode to Bdsm in which lead singer Jemina Pearl Abegg sneers, “Count your lashes and beg for more…Pray at the altar in your temple of pain,” over a wiry guitar line. The track boasts the same let’s-rock attitude that the Nashville garage-punk quartet’s previous releases did, even if the throwback vibes fall on the dusty side.
Lack of artistic development can be forgiven for a band like Be Your Own Pet that trades in straightforward pop-punk. But at times, they seem to be running on fumes. “Pleasure Seeker,” for one, shoots its wad with a super gritty riff on a song that could otherwise be characterized as a nonentity. There are two versions of the Stephen King adaptation Needful Things (watch it Here): the 2 hour theatrical cut and a 3 hour version that airs only on TBS and has never gotten a proper home video release. That’s about to change, as Kino Lorber has confirmed that their upcoming 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release of Needful Things, which is set to be released on July 25th, will contain both the theatrical cut and the 191 minute TV cut! Copies of this release can be pre-ordered at This Link. It goes for the price of $26.57 and only ships to the United States and Canada.
Needful Things was directed by Fraser C. Heston (the son of Charlton Heston) from a screenplay by Buckaroo Banzai director / Big Trouble in Little China writer W.D. Richter. Here’s the synopsis: When a creepy older man named Leland Gaunt moves to a small town in Maine...

John Carpenter, the writer/director behind classic comedy adventure "Big Trouble In Little China" (1986), starring Kurt Russell as 'Jack Burton', isn't too keen about the long-delayed sequel to his film, after being left out of the creative process. "They want a movie with Dwayne Johnson," said Carpenter. "that's what they want. So they just picked that title...":
"You can't remake a classic like that, so what we're planning to do is we're going to continue the story," said sequel producer Hiram Garcia.
"We're going to continue the universe of 'Big Trouble in Little China'.
"Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there's only one person that could ever play Jack Burton...
"...so Dwayne would never try and play that character..."

Arriving on Netflix this Friday, August 12th, is J.J. Perry’s Day Shift, a kickass horror/action/comedy hybrid that stars Jamie Foxx as a vampire hunter working in California’s San Fernando Valley and features a killer ensemble that also includes Dave Franco, Snoop Dogg, Peter Stormare, Scott Adkins, Steve Howey, Meagan Goode, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. Day Shift marks Perry’s directorial debut, but he’s been working in Hollywood for decades now as a stunt coordinator and second unit director, making his transition into the director’s chair a natural progression in his career.
During the recent press day for Day Shift, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Perry about his first time at the helm of his own movie, and during our chat, he discussed how he was able to incorporate so many ideas that he’s had throughout his career into Day Shift,...

Of all the movies I loved as a kid, "Big Trouble in Little China" is the one that has stuck with me the longest. The original "Star Wars" trilogy? I'm so incredibly over it, my boyhood passions deadened by the endless sequels and spinoffs. "Raiders of the Lost Ark?" Undeniably awesome, but a little too mainstream for my more cultish tastes these days.
"Big Trouble" had me hooked from the moment I first laid eyes on that brilliant poster art by Brian Bysouth. It promised action, adventure, mystery, shootouts, sorcery, kung fu, spooky locations, and a badass hero with a really cool-looking gun....

Marvel sure took their sweet time, but we finally have a Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer. It was absolutely worth the wait. Taika Waititi’s long awaited sequel to Thor: Ragnarok (the movie which landed at #1 on our comprehensive ranking of the MCU movies) is a brightly-colored blast of good vibes, Marvel Comics Easter eggs and references, and callbacks to Thor’s earlier adventures.
There’s plenty of humor, even more cosmic scope, and barely a hint of the terrifying villain waiting in the wings for our heroes. Clocking in at just 89 seconds, there’s still plenty to unpack, both for fans of the comics and Marvel Studios.
Watch the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer here if you haven’t already, then we’ll get to work breaking this down…

At the end of Escape from L.A. (1996), Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken fingers a device which can shut down all technology across the planet. Luckily, Paramount Home Entertainment will have the sequel to John Carpenter’s Escape from New York available on 4K Ultra HD before he can punch the 666-access code into the keypad. Made for $50 million in the year Jurassic Park was budgeted at $65 million, the cult epic follow-up turned up the volume, action, FX, and nihilistic cynicism of its predecessor for an over-the-top high-tide hang glide.
Escape from L.A. is a dystopian satire where the U.S. government nationalized Christianity into a theocracy called the New Moral America, and elected Cliff Robertson’s President Adam as Chief Executive Officer for life. His first executive action is to deport the morally guilty – atheists, teenage runaways, drug dealers, abortion doctors, and other offenders – to the newly isolated island of Los Angeles.

There are most definitely movies that many people would rather see left alone since while they might not have been popular in their own time, they’ve been deemed classics over time by the fans that have finally come around or have realized just what a treasure they are. Big Trouble in Little China doesn’t start out as much since all it really shows is Jack Burton, played by Kurt Russell, talking in a cocky manner and driving his truck way too fast down treacherous roads. But believe it or not, people actually like that, and the cocky nature of Burton

It’s July 2021, and instead of talking about “F9,” “Black Widow,” or any of the summer blockbusters from this year, The Playlist Podcast is going back to the ‘80s to talk about two cult classic summer films, “Escape From New York” and “Big Trouble in Little China.” Why? Because they’re both celebrating big anniversaries. Oh, and because John Carpenter is one of the best filmmakers of all time and Kurt Russell is a national treasure.

Well, let’s keep the same formula and feature Murphy as a hip, wisecracking hero who this time finds lost children. Then, throw in a bit of martial arts in the style of John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China and add some Asian mysticism that reminds viewers of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The years spent by Bruce Wayne training to become a crimefighter are some of the most fascinating in the Batman mythos, and have been explored in multiple ways across various mediums. A new DC animated feature, Batman: Soul of the Dragon now offers the intriguing prospect of a 1970s-set story wherein a young Bruce embarks on the path to martial arts mastery. We recently received the trailer and first clip from the film, and now have an introduction to Richard Dragon, one of the main characters from the Bruce Timm-produced movie.
In the video, which you can catch above, voice actor Mark Dacascos describes how we meet Dragon in the 1970s as a super spy who trained with Bruce alongside master O-Sensei. We then see Dragon in training, and being pointed out by O-Sensei to Bruce, foreshadowing the partnership between the two depicted in the recent trailer. At this point,...

Batman: Soul of the Dragon sounds like an interesting departure from the usual slate of DC animated movies. The story is set during the 1970s and follows a young Bruce Wayne on the path of martial arts mastery. We’ll see him training with and battling other elite martial artists, including Richard Dragon, Ben Turner and Lady Shiva, all of whom are under the tutelage of O-Sensei.
We don’t know too much about the plot just yet, but the synopsis has teased that the students will have to face off against “a deadly menace from the past.” Who this is remains a mystery, but given the location the film is set in, the kung fu movie tone and the 1970s time period, I think the chances are good that the menace will be a bare-chested Ra’s al Ghul.
Now, we have the first clip from the pic, showing...

Kurt Russell shot to mainstream attention as the ruggedly handsome lead of several classic genre movies in the 1980s, positively radiating star charisma and boasting one of the most finely coiffed hairstyles of an era almost entirely defined by them. However, as hard as it seems to imagine given his chiseled features and twinkly-eyed charm, the actor initially got his big break in the industry when he was barely into his teens.
The young Russell scored his first credited role for three episodes of The Dick Powell Show all the way back in 1962, before signing a ten-year contract with Disney in 1966. In fact, in a bizarre bit of trivia, the final words ever written down by Walt Disney himself were ‘Kurt Russell,’ which he scrawled on a piece of paper shortly before he died.

Poor Maisie Williams. After spending eight seasons on “Game of Thrones,” with her character Arya Stark being orphaned, beaten, blinded and battered, she got a job as a Marvel superhero in “The New Mutants” – but that film, which hit theaters on Aug. 28, turned out to put a horror-movie spin on a Marvel movie by focusing on superpowers run amok in an abandoned hospital.

Deadline is reporting that writer Ashley Edward Miller has joined the previously announced television adaptation of the Myst video game series from Village Roadshow Entertainment Group.
You may know Miller best as the writer of the X-Men: First Class screenplay. He also wrote the screenplay for 2011’s Thor and has written for television series such as Fringe, Andromeda, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. On top of his reported involvement with this Myst series, he is also drafting a screenplay for the upcoming Big Trouble in Little China movie.
At the moment, it sounds like the plan is for Miller to write the pilot episode for the Myst television show and to serve as showrunner for the series moving forward. However, Miller has not officially commented on the extent of his involvement with the series at this time.
This adaptation is quite fascinating for a couple of reasons beyond Miller’s participation.
