The viewing public learned of CSI: Vegas's end on April 19.
Its cancellation by CBS really shouldn't have come as a shock. Its middling ratings have made it a bubble show throughout its entire run.
CSI: Vegas had every opportunity to thrive. It first aired in 2021, amid a wistful revival craze as a nation coming out of a pandemic sought comfort viewing.
In that first season, odd couple Gil Grissom (William Peterson) and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) returned to break a conspiracy smearing the former crime lab's reputation.
At the same time, this generation's CSI lab, led by Maxine Roby (Paula Newsome), solved new cases like the former criminologists that viewers had loved for 16 seasons, only with newer, fancier gadgets to do the work.
Marg Helgenberger's Catherine Willows has fit seamlessly with the current squad over the past two seasons.
Like a legacy at any institution, the series was given time to find its way.

No second chances are coming for So Help Me Todd, CSI: Vegas and NCIS: Hawaii. But good news for CSI fans: there is another iteration in active development.
While speaking to reporters Thursday about the fall season, CBS bosses George Cheeks and Amy Reisenbach acknowledged their “embarrassment of riches” when it came to new and returning shows but added it was “incumbent to keep the schedule fresh and keep the momentum going.”

The end of the TV season is always heartbreaking.
Not only do our favorites wrap up for the season, but some shows end forever. And the 2024 season is one of the worst ever.
There are at least seven series ending that we don't want to say goodbye to, but the finales are coming up fast.
The 2024 season was more heartbreaking than most. The season was truncated because of the WGA writers' and Sga-aftra actors' strikes.
Many beloved shows had short seasons of 10-13 episodes, and some with even fewer new shows. There have been long hiatuses that seemed to begin almost as soon as shows finally started airing. Worst of all, many series cancelations were announced just as shows began airing.
There was a bloodbath over at many networks, but CBS had the highest number of casualties, with five of the seven shows we're most heartbroken about leaving that network.

Sadly, we’re going to be saying goodbye to our favorite CSIs in the Las Vegas Crime Lab once again: CSI: Vegas will not be returning for a fourth season. The third season was a shorter one, and so that played into the way these 10 episodes unfold, as showrunner Jason Tracey told TV Insider in February. “We’ve got two pretty tight serialized arcs that are kind of unfolding,” he’d said at the time, and that likely ruled out any cameos from past CSI shows as well as returning to past cases (including something like Silver Ink from Vegas Season 2). But hey, at least we have Marg Helgenberger for her second season reprising her role of Catherine from the original CSI. Now that we know there are only four episodes left of the series, below, we take a look at two of the major storylines that need to be addressed in them.

The CSI franchise’s return to CBS is coming to an end as CBS on Friday opted not to renew CSI: Vegas for a fourth season.
On Saturday, CSI and CSI: Vegas star Marg Helgenberger who played Catherine Willows for 14 seasons across the original series and the followup, reflected on the cancellation.

Last year, CSI: Vegas was CBS' lowest-rated scripted series to be renewed, and it was also one of the network's lowest-rated series overall. The network's studio produces the series, and it's connected to a popular franchise, but that may not be enough to save it this time if the ratings stay low. Will CSI: Vegas be cancelled or renewed for season four? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

Crime procedurals have thrived on primetime television for over two decades, and several of them are still streamed frequently.
Popular shows like Law & Order, Law & Order: Svu, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and NCIS have existed since the 1990s and the 2000s. Due to their popularity, these series have created multiple spinoffs and revivals.
Almost every network has at least one crime procedural on their primetime TV lineup. NBC has an entire night devoted to the Law & Order Universe. CBS has more procedurals than we can count, and they recently added another with Tracker, led by Justin Hartley.
While crime procedurals are still one of the most-watched genres, has the primetime TV lineup become overstuffed with them?
Let's discuss why some of them have thrived for years and the potential upcoming scheduling issues.

Both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” have been canceled at CBS, Variety has learned.
“So Help Me Todd” is currently airing its second season at the broadcaster, while “CSI: Vegas” is airing its third. Both shows are scheduled to air their season finales in May, which will now serve as series finales.
The two shows were some of the few CBS shows awaiting words on their fates for next season. The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.
In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

Streaming channels make headlines with mergers and syndication deals, but CBS has reached its level of network television success simply by maintaining a well-stocked lineup of scripted shows.
Boasting consistently high ratings, CBS proves there is indeed a large audience that tunes in for scripted television outside of streaming channels.
This is good news for viewers searching for network alternatives to reality shows.
The potentially bad news is that almost all of CBS's scripted shows are procedurals and reboots.
Is this narrow focus a conscious decision or just a response to upcoming structural changes at the network?
Two of their biggest comedies (Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola) are set to end in May. CBS's procedural landscape will also take a hit when Blue Bloods concludes its fourteen-season run this fall.

According to The Wrap, Pruitt Taylor-Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent in James Gunn’s Superman. I can’t say that’s who I expected to play Clark Kent’s adoptive human father in the movie, but I’ve always been a big fan of the actor, who has appeared in everything from The X-Files to Deadwood to The Walking Dead.
Pruitt Taylor-Vince will join the long line of actors who have brought Jonathan Kent to life in movies and television, including Glenn Ford in the original Superman movie, John Schneider in Smallville, Kevin Costner in Man of Steel, and many more. As I mentioned above, Taylor-Vince might not feel like the obvious choice for the role, but he’s a true talent and I hope fans give him a chance.

CBS's Elsbeth made a splash with its debut, but afterward, audiences had to wait two months for more.
When it returned, it established itself as a quirky, lighthearted murder mystery series, though there is a darker overarching plot surrounding the lawyer's secret investigation into her new boss.
By now, it's clear this series is nothing like The Good Wife despite being a spinoff, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's lost its way.
Elsbeth is far more formulaic than The Good Wife, so it may appeal to a different audience. The Good Wife was a dark satire (not necessarily funny) about complex legal issues and the sacrifices people made to gain political points. Elsbeth is none of that.
The title character was a quirky attorney on The Good Wife, and as expected, she's the same on Elsbeth. She also is the lead in a cozy mystery show, which may not...

CBS is looking to reopen Cold Case. A reboot of the crime procedural, which aired for seven seasons from 2003 to 2010, is currently in development at the Eye Network, our sister site Deadline reports.

Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?
What is All American About?
All American was inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra portrays the fictional lead role of Spencer James.

It seems like every procedural show has a slow-burn pairing. CSI teased Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle for seven seasons before they officially started dating.
Josh Folsom (Matt Lauria) and Allie Rajan (Mandeep Dhillon) have danced around their relationship for three seasons. Has the endless teasing of their romance become too much, or do you enjoy Josh and Allie's relationship?
If someone had asked that question in CSI: Vegas Season 2, I would have responded that the love triangle with Serena was a horrible look, along with teasing their relationship. However, the two of them now stand a chance at a real relationship.
Josh and Allie worked right away as partners, and there was believable sexual tension between them. They were billed as a young Grissom and Sara in many ways, though long-time CSI fans didn't appreciate that.
Allie was more methodical and tightly wound and needed to learn to experience...

Exclusive: Anthony E. Zuiker, the creator of the hugely successful CSI TV franchise, has signed with boutique management firm Literate.
This marks a rare new addition to Zuiker’s close-knit representation team, nicknamed affectionately by the writer-producer “Team Zuiker,” who has been shaping his career and brand for more than two decades.
It follows the January death of Zuiker’s beloved manager of over 25 years, Margaret Riley, most recently of Lighthouse Entertainment, who passed away from cancer at the age of 58.
In a moving tribute for Deadline at the time, Zuiker recalled how Riley signed Zuiker on his 30th birthday, 8/17/1998, when he was still trying to break into Hollywood. Helping him land early writing gigs that led to CSI, Riley also took Zuiker to the talent agencies, with him landing at CAA with Joe Cohen, and introduced him to entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn. Quentin Tarantino is one of our most renowned cinephiles, as illustrated by his encyclopedic knowledge of film history, genres, and Hollywood stars. He is mostly known for creating audacious films such as "Pulp Fiction" and the "Kill Bill" series. While he has co-directed other movies (such as "Four Rooms" and "Sin City"), it is Tarantino's originals that have left a distinct impact on popular culture.
But did you know that Tarantino has also dabbled in television directing? As "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" demonstrated, he is just as savvy about television as he is about film, with a wide knowledge of its unique ecosystem and history. He brought this deep appreciation of television to his work on the eerie two-part season 5 finale of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" entitled "Grave Danger" in 2005. When the Los Angeles Times asked the wildly creative director if he felt "trapped by working within the confines of network television,...

Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette chaired a career masterclass this afternoon at Series Mania in Lille, France, where she served as this year’s guest of honor.
Topics up for discussion during the session ranged from Arquette’s childhood growing up on a “hippie” commune with her parents in rural Virginia alongside her career as an actress, working with filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Richard Linklater, and David Lynch.
“He gives you a lot of freedom,” Arquette said of Lynch, whom she worked with on his 1997 surrealist feature Lost Highway.
Lynch’s Lost Highway, like many of his films of the 90s, is a project focused on gender, sexuality, and sensuality. In the pic — which also stars Bill Pullman — Arquette’s character is involved in a prolonged nude scene. Arquette said that at the time, she had been “really uncomfortable with nudity.” However, she pushed on with the scene to challenge herself as an artist,...

‘Superman & Lois’ has garnered praise as one of CW’s top superhero shows. Despite CW’s restructuring and cancelation of many projects, ‘Superman & Lois’ secured its season 4 renewal shortly before the season 3 finale. Although loosely connected to the Arrowverse, the show has distinguished itself from other CW superhero series, which have faced criticism in recent years.
Season 4 has been confirmed as the show’s final season, with reduced episodes, a smaller main cast, and a smaller writing team due to budget constraints. Despite these changes, an iconic character, Jimmy Olsen, is set to appear, with Douglas Smith cast in the role according to TVLine.
In the show, Jimmy is depicted as an outgoing young adult who is known for being the life of the party at work. Despite working closely with Clark, he struggles to break through Clark’s reserved demeanor. Unaware of Clark’s secret identity as Superman, Jimmy is determined to befriend him.

‘Superman & Lois’ is often touted as being one of the best CW’s superhero-based shows. This is why even following CW restructuring after many projects were written off, ‘Superman & Lois’ managed to score its season 4 renewal just weeks prior to the season 3 finale. Although unofficially a part of Arrowverse, the show managed to distance itself from other CW’s similar projects that were regarded as straight-up bad in the last few years, especially looking back at the disappointing Flash finale.
A few months ago it was confirmed that Season 4 would be the show’s last, even though the viewership remained steady, it wasn’t nearly enough to justify a high CGI budget. Season 4 is set to return with fewer episodes, with much of its main cast missing and a much smaller writers team. But the show must go on and so one iconic character will reportedly appear in the show.

"All in the Family" might've been Norman Lear's finest half-hour as a sitcom producer, but I'm not sure he ever put a funnier show on the airwaves than "The Jeffersons." For 11 seasons, Sherman Hemsley's dry-cleaning magnate George Jefferson and Isabel Sanford's good-hearted Louise "Weezy" Jefferson led a stellar cast that delivered edgy-for-network-television laughs revolving around race, class, gender, and whatever happened to be grinding the hot-headed George's gears that particular week. It was the African-American answer to "All in the Family" (on which the characters of George and Weezy originated), and might actually be more shocking today for its fearless deployment of the n-word (particularly early in the series' run).
And if you're making a list of the most memorable theme songs in television history, "The Jeffersons" better be in the top five. Anyone who grew up watching the show in prime time or via syndication should...

Whenever a television series passes that fifth season threshold, it becomes vital for producers to keep things fresh without veering away from what viewers love about this particular show. This is especially true for law enforcement procedurals. You think there are only so many ways people can be killed, and a finite number of methods to solve said murders? Think again. And if you're a writer on one of these shows, you better think extra hard.
Over the 34-and-counting years of its existence, the "Law & Order" franchise (read our season ranking here) has addressed this issue by building episodes around actual, ripped-from-the-headlines crimes. It's gotten to the point that when a murder becomes national news, you immediately wonder how "Law & Order" will adapt it.

[This story contains spoilers from the two-part season premiere of Manhunt.]
In an era of TV police and crime series like CSI and The Killing, using the forensic investigation of a crime scene, including DNA and fingerprints, to help find a killer and solve a murder is commonplace.
So Monica Beletsky, the creator of Apple TV+’s Manhunt miniseries, had a challenge when adapting the pursuit of Abraham Lincoln’s killer as a true-crime detective thriller, because Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, and the 12-day hunt for John Wilkes Booth that followed, took place well before real-life forensic science and the gathering of evidence at crime scenes had been established.
“I love the idea of, how do you find this needle in a haystack, this man who could be anywhere in North America, when you don’t have a phone, you don’t have cars or video cameras? There’s no 24-hour news,” Beletsky explains to the The Hollywood Reporter.

If there’s one thing you can count on in a Ryuhei Kitamura horror film, it’s the copious amounts of bloodshed and gore. With Kitamura, gore is most definitely an artform. Based on Clive Barker’s 1984 short story of the same name, 2008 film The Midnight Meat Train follows a photographer obsessed with dark subject matter. He gets in over his head when he discovers a serial killer that butchers unsuspecting night commuters in grisly fashion.
There’s probably not many movies as aptly titled as this one. There’s a lot of human meat, blood, brain matter, and limbs being carved up on the late-night subway train in this horror movie. Bradley Cooper stars as Leon Kaufman, the photographer that stumbles upon and then becomes obsessed with the ruthless serial killer. His concerned girlfriend Maya, a character not in the original story, is played by Leslie Bibb. But the...

NCIS has been part of the television landscape for the past two decades.
Following a two-episode backdoor pilot on Jag in 2003, the redundantly named Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service debuted in the fall of that year.
Although it started slowly ratings-wise in its first couple of seasons, a franchise soon was born.
Now in its 21st season, NCIS has produced more than 450 episodes and six spinoff series, a record unmatched in TV history (although Law & Order fans doubtless will quibble).
Maybe now, shortly after the series said goodbye to its second-most popular character on NCIS Season 21 Episode 2, would be a good time for a hiatus.
That's insane, you say, what with two new spinoffs in the pipeline.
Look back fondly
Let's start with the fact that every day, on cable and streaming, fans can watch their favorite episodes from the golden years of NCIS, back before Abby, Tony, Ziva,...

It was business as usual as the series' four-episode arc about Will's paternity ended.
Angie returned to work on Will Trent Season 2 Episode 3, and her partnership with Michael was stronger than ever as they dealt with a sauna murder that was too close to home for Michael. Meanwhile, Will's views on religion and faith were tested with a complicated murder and missing woman case.
They've been pulling out seasoned guest stars and tying in emotional character arcs. Tonight is no exception.
While the series has moved on to business as usual, Will has not moved on yet. He still had visions of Cricket and avoided going to the office unless he was called into a case.
It was endearing that he and Betty went to support Angie when she passed her physical, but she saw right through his facade.
Angie: Have you talked to anyone about the explosion?
Will: No.

With CSI: Vegas‘ reveal that it was drug lord Raphael Tarquenio and his nephew who had offed Kahn Schefter aka the man who murdered Jeannette Folsom, CSI Josh should be in the clear, right?
Oh, you’re so very wrong. Because the fact remains that Josh crossed many a line in the course or capturing Schefter and torturing him for information about his mom’s murder. And in this Sunday’s episode (airing at 10/9c on CBS), it will be up to the Las Vegas Review Board — and at-times surprising testimony from Max (Paula Newsome) — to determine the fate of the heretofore-stellar CSI’s career.

Lex Scott Davis has been cast as the female lead opposite Stephen Amell in the NBC drama pilot Suits L.A., a new extension of the Suits universe from Aaron Korsh, creator and writer of the original series. In addition to Amell, Davis also joins series regular Josh McDermitt in the pilot, whose production is scheduled to start in late March in Vancouver. She landed the role after an extensive search.
Suits L.A. centers on Ted Black (Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York, who has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles after joining forces with his old buddy, Stuart Lane (McDermitt), to build Black Lane Law, which specializes in criminal and entertainment law.
The firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career. Ted is surrounded by a group...

In 19 memorable episodes that aired over the course of a dozen years and across two different shows — CBS’ The Good Wife and its streaming spinoff The Good Fight — Carrie Preston played Elsbeth Tascioni, a brilliant lawyer whose eccentric behavior constantly threw off the heroes of those dramas. So naturally, when Preston gets her own series, simply titled Elsbeth, the character is now helping the NYPD solve murders. As one does, right?
This is not the strangest left turn a TV spinoff has taken, if only because Baywatch Nights — where David Hasselhoff...

The episode undoubtedly had several twists and turns that sent the series off in new directions.
CSI: Vegas Season 3 Episode 2 also served as a spotlight episode for Catherine.
That's always something to be celebrated by the returning viewers, who want to see that one O.G. character out in front.
Even better, it focused on a case that managed to be both cold and new simultaneously.
It was capably set up with Catherine reciting her "white whale case" to Maxine.
It certainly made sense that, with Catherine's long connection to the lab, she would have that one case that's haunted her.
How convenient was it that it too involved Rafael Tarquenio, the drug lord suspected of being behind Jeannette's murder?
Well, it definitely figures that Tarquenio would have some hand in any number of open cases, so why not explore that?
And, with Folsom so recently going off the rails,...

A former Suits actor has ruled out Og cast members joining the upcoming spinoff series. However, they haven’t entirely dismissed the idea of cameos or the occasional appearance from the likes of Meghan Markle and other Suits stars. Ahead, what’s been made “very clear” about Suits L.A.
No original cast members are expected to join the ‘Suits’ spinoff as regulars
Sorry, Suits fans. For those hoping to see familiar faces on the upcoming spinoff in the wake of the original show’s renewed popularity, it’s not happening.
Rachael Harris, who played Sheila Sazs and is a friend of Suits creator Aaron Korsh, opened up about Suits L.A. at the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. She told The Mirror that Korsh has no plans of adding actors from Suits to the cast of the spinoff.
“Well, this is the thing […] Aaron Korsh, who created the original Suits I know personally.

If you didn't know Quentin Tarantino hosted "Saturday Night Live" in the 1990s, and had to guess when he took the Studio 8H stage, your best options would be early 1995 (when the zeitgeisty "Pulp Fiction" was speeding toward an Academy Awards showdown with "Forrest Gump"), early 1996 (to promote "From Dusk till Dawn") or late 1997/early 1998 (in support of "Jackie Brown"). None of these would be correct.
No, the brash indie filmmaking sensation guested on November 11, 1995, with nothing to promote but himself. This might seem peculiar now, but it made perfect sense at the time because, after the Oscars, Tarantino was hitting the talk show circuit harder than Don Rickles. Could you blame him? He'd skyrocketed from know-it-all video store clerk to generational filmmaking genius. The problem here was that Tarantino knew he was a genius before critics and fans started telling him so. As a result, he felt free to...

Josh Folsom may have been cleared, but ...
A very talented criminologist's career remained in the balance at the conclusion of CSI: Vegas Season 3 Episode 1.
Josh brought this situation on himself, being at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person.
It wasn't like Folsom didn't already have enough strikes against him.
He is a native of the wrong side of Vegas. He grew as a CSI the hard way, absorbing like a sponge what his coworkers had to offer, especially his mentor, Maxine.
Frankly, he's the only one at the Las Vegas lab who didn't come off like a science nerd. You could see Josh enjoying a beer at any bar along the Strip.
Could that happen with Allie or even Penny? That's not very likely.
Serena has that down-to-earth quality as well. It's little wonder that Folsom ended up with her instead of Allie.
Josh chose family over his lover,...

"Bones" and "Breaking Bad" represented opposing ends of the television spectrum when they aired simultaneously from 2008 to 2013 (a mere fraction of the former's 12-season run from 2005 to 2017). The consistently sizable viewership for "Bones" affirmed that for all the critical accolades showered on "Breaking Bad" and other Peak TV shows, network programming was still the undisputed champion when it came to ratings. Meanwhile, "Breaking Bad" was proof of the untapped potential of the medium when it came to unfurling a complex long-form narrative across several seasons of episodic storytelling.
Of course, those are matters for us nerds to fixate on. The stars of "Breaking Bad" were more than happy to take their share of network TV gigs in the years leading up to Vince Gilligan's watershed crime drama. For more than a decade before he started cooking meth with Walter White as Jesse Pinkman, Aaron Paul got by with one-off parts on "Beverly Hills, 90210,...
