Lalo Schifrin: Self

Quotes

  • Lalo Schifrin : I think it is a marvelous film. A masterpiece.

Ralph Nelson : Well, thank you Lalo. But, now you've seen the story, you've seen the actors, now there's one important ingredient missing and that's the music. And this is why I wanted you to see it. Because, I want you to do the movie score for the picture. You with your knowledge of contemporary rhythms, your classical background, can all contribute a great deal to this story.

Lalo Schifrin : Yes, I think so. Especially I see that beyond those reasons, the excitement and the violence, I would like to point out with the music that repressed sadness that is all through the picture.

Ralph Nelson : That is a very perceptive remark. And that sadness is a part of contemporary living today.

  • Lalo Schifrin : In this picture, we went a little bit further. We want to see if we tried to use the music as a psychological vehicle. The music was only a point of departure that went into the minds of the characters; more or less, imitating the camera with different point of views. The way we did it was we use very simple themes with strong melodic lines. It could be elastic enough to be converted into different moods according to what the action required.
