- Giovanni, the cashier of a bank, is the leader and evil genius of a black-hand society. From his window in the vault he directs its operations. His confederates come to him with bank books as if to deposit money and in these bank books their messages are exchanged. Giovanni loves Maria, the bank president's daughter, and although his affection is not returned he holds her under a sinister, hypnotic influence. A crippled girl, to whom Maria gives a necklace as a token of friendship, is abducted by the society and held for ransom. The ransom is paid and the girl liberated, but the necklace is stolen. In the meanwhile there is a run on the bank, and the society informs the bank president that in case the society's money is not paid he will answer for it with his life. Incident to the run the frenzied crowd beat at the doors of the bank and the president is terrified. Giovanni leads Maria and her father from the bank by a rear door and takes them to the country headquarters of the society. Maria sees the necklace which she gave the crippled girl on the neck of an inmate, and she realizes who Giovanni really is. She sends the chauffeur for the police. Maria then falls under the hypnotic influence of Giovanni and a forced wedding is about to take place when the police arrive and arrest Giovanni and the members of his gang.—Moving Picture World synopsis
