Today being international jazz day, there will be much celebrating of the greatness of its history. I’ve done that in the past; it is a great history. But it is not all back in historical times; jazz lives, and evolves, and continues to be great. Yet how many lists of the greatest jazz albums include anything from the current century?
That they do not is no indictment of them; only sixteen percent of the years when recorded jazz has existed (not counting the present year yet) are in the twenty-first century, after all, and some prefer to bestow the label of greatness after more perspective has been achieved than sixteen (or fewer, for newer releases) years.
Nonetheless, if people are to respect jazz as a living art form, a look back at the best of its more recent releases seems worthwhile. Here’s one man’s “baker’s dozen...

Take a trip into political art history: the state-run East German film company Defa uses the experiences of Communist artists to promote the party line and educate young people on the sacrifices of the past. Some of the personal stories are incredible, and the art covered is indeed very impressive -- writers, illustrators, a cartoonist, a film director, an actor, a journalist. It's interesting to see what the films choose to emphasize and what they choose to ignore.

Park City. This doesn't happen often, but I had to stay after the Sundance Film Festival premiere screening of "Slow West" to listen to the Q&A with director John MacLean to get a sense of what the intended tone was for his World Cinema Dramatic Competition entry. Large portions of the second half of the 1870-set Western made me laugh, sometimes fairly hard, but I couldn't quite tell if the aspiration was parody or misgauged sincerity. The answer? Neither. Maclean said he was going for something almost fairy-tale-esque at the bloody climax of "Slow West," which means that something heightened was an aspiration, even if fairy tales very rarely leave me laughing. Sometimes you're just not receiving signals on the frequency that a movie is transmitting and I accept that just may be the case, especially since the first questioner praised "Slow West" for its realism. Realism, eh? The...

Narrator, Jack (Jamie Blackley, Misfits), confesses he hates "rioters... politicians... archive footage... mobs... skin heads... goths... films where people talk to the camera..” as a montage of archive footage is shown, immediately suggesting Director/Writer, Justin Edgar (Large) is trying to be clever in his second feature, We Are The Freaks.

"What makes Johann run — and rob?" asks Melissa Anderson in the Voice. "Benjamin Heisenberg's second feature is as taut, lean, and fleet as its title character, played by Andreas Lust and based on the real-life Johann Kastenberger, who was both Austria's most-wanted bank robber of the 1980s and a champion marathoner. Writing the script with Martin Prinz, who adapted his own 2005 novel about the notorious criminal, Heisenberg forgoes backstory and psychological explanation, structuring his film as a series of adrenaline spikes."
"Lust's character in The Robber is familiar from European crime movies," suggests Noel Murray at the Av Club. "He's the stoic loner who doesn't say much, lest he inadvertently reveal some kind of motivation. When he robs banks, he wears a thin mask that doesn't look all that different from his face, and when he goes on a date with his caseworker, Franziska Weisz, he's more amused by...

This month we took sixty-four popular webcomics and put them head to head in a single-elimination tournament. We’re now in round three– the Sweet 16!
Erfworld continues its dominance in the brackets, with Kawaii Not showing surprising strength. Theater Hopper is surprisingly quiet, but they’ve gotten late traction before.
And at this point, nobody has an insurmountable lead– anybody can make a call out to their followers and retake the lead, and after two days of hand-to-hand electioneering at C2E2, the scores can really change. Every match is still too close to call.
So get your votes in– and see who becomes the Elite 8!

We have just over a day until the 2009 Oscar nominees are announced and depending on when you are reading this maybe even less or they have already been announced. My latest updates have only one change in terms of the top five in any of the eight categories I am predicting, but there is a lot of action in the ranks of 6-10 as those bubble contenders are nipping at the heels of the leaders. On top of that, I cannot begin to tell you how much films such as Milk and Frost/Nixon worry me. These are two films everyone seems to be taking for granted and in the case of Frost/Nixon it seems Frank Langella, Ron Howard, the script by Peter Morgan and the film itself were penciled in before anyone even saw the film. Is it really an Oscar caliber production? Personally I don't think so,...
