Excellent screenplay and acting
dshrm1293 July 2010
Very insightful screenplay and soulful acting. Both protagonists are very strong and compassionate females, and the movie is essentially about their bonding. It is difficult not to empathize with them. Their similarity of situations brings them together in the first place and from there on the writer does a great job of showing us how they slowly become friends on some level. She also does a very commendable job of highlighting how in India we mercilessly classify the mentally-underprivileged as "pagol". The supporting cast is spot on, and not one dialog in this movie is overdone or unnecessary. I gave it a 9 because the lives of these two women felt so overwhelmingly sad at times.

Aparna's finest...?

Rajesh Sharma is a bit stilted. Beautiful absolutely beautiful performances all around otherwise. The scene at the funeral meeting where the women are gossiping and chuckling and the camera pans to Sanaka's friend. Great observation. It's the little things that make this film and therefore ultimately is greater than the sum of its parts.

nostalgic, nuanced emotions

Such a well crafted masterpiece You'll basically feel everyone's emotions, Shonoka's fear of loneliness; Paromita's grief, self discovery even Khuku's sadness. You'll feel nostalgic along with Paromita, everytime she reminisces her old days.

P. S I spotted Konkona Sen's brief appearance too :')

Great Film

Warning: Spoilers
A sensitive film about a mother and daughter-in-law who must find a way around social convention to remain friends after the latter's marriage breaks down.

Paromitar Ek Din is a Bengali film exploring the dual themes of friendship and loneliness. Sanaka (Aparna Sen) and Paromita (Rituparna Sengupta) are mother and daughter-in-law who, despite differences in age, backgrounds and temperaments, build a strong bond together. But when Paromita's marriage to Sanaka's son breaks down, social mores prevent the women from remaining close friends.

While Paromita remarries and begins a new life, her mother-in-law (played brilliantly by Aparna Sen) is left heartbroken and alone and eventually falls seriously ill. When Paromita learns of her friend's deterioration, she is compelled to flout convention, and returns to nurse Sanaka on her deathbed. Aparna Sen has made a sensitive and gentle film about the different way in which women unite despite the expectations of social norms.

Absolutely beautiful

Warning: Spoilers
This movie addresses lots of problems that's faced by Indian women. It's a story about two very strong, women who give birth to mentally challenged children. The society, including their husbands, blame both mothers for this natural cause. It shows how most men play no role in looking after or dealing with the kids, and cause more problem on top of it (Not saying that this is the case with all men but majority of them still do not get involved with child's health in India - it's appalling).

Also shows bonding between mother and daughter in law, which usually is always shown negatively in most indian movies/dramas. Touches upon old age, being a carer and death. Also a bit about divorce and moving on.

I personally loved this movie and highly recommend it.
