The graphophone was an improved version of Thomas Edison's phonograph, which was developed by Alexander Graham Bell's Volta Laboratory and Bureau in the early 1880s. It became commercially available in 1886, sold by the Volta Graphophone Company. Following a number of corporate changes, the company became known as Columbia Records.
