Truly mesmerising
I've been into opera for years now, but it wasn't until recently that I heard anything from Francessca Da Ramini other than the basic story. I was blown away, it is such beautiful music particularly a long cello solo that is staged absolutely beautifully here. This production is mesmerising, it is visually sumptuous with lovingly rendered costumes and sets and the video directing and picture quality are excellent, while the orchestra and conducting are done with no qualms at all. Renata Scotto is not in her prime, but you don't mind so much because her performance here is so good, she has a wonderful voice and has a gift of being emotionally and dramatically involved with every character she plays(the case here). Placido Domingo is every bit her equal, like Scotto he is not only a superb singer but a truly outstanding actor as well, and this role is perfect for him. Cornell MacNeil and William Lewis are suitably repellent too, particularly MacNeil, who while he is past prime and his voice is not as beautiful as it was in the 60s for example, he is very compelling and brutish here. All in all, mesmerising. 10/10 Bethany Cox
