It’s the end of the world, and Mulligan has turned the apocalypse into one big joke.
Created by 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alums Sam Means and Robert Carlock, the animated comedy series about Matty Mulligan — the everyman who becomes president after Earth is destroyed by aliens — is getting a Part 2. The upcoming 10 episodes include a party cruise ship full of new characters, lavish musical numbers, guest stars, and a newly invented meat substitute that takes on a (terrible) personality.

In the second instalment with Alexander Payne’s longtime 'secret weapon' graphic designer Nate Carlson, we discuss their latest multiple award-winning collaboration The Holdovers’ stained glass windows and memorial inscriptions in the school chapel, a running theme of pharmacies and prescription bottles, the mastery of punctuation humour from Election to Marcus Aurelius, the art of combining the pre-existing with the new, and the family polaroid.
Nate Carlson on Alexander Payne: “He always likes to put those little hidden gems in there and I am certainly open to accommodate.”
The Holdovers (screenplay by David Hemingson), stars Golden Globe winner Paul Giamatti, Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph and BAFTA Best Supporting Actor nominee Dominic Sessa and has a terrific supporting cast led by Carrie Preston with Brady Hepner,...

My guest this week is Renée Elise Goldsberry.
A Tony and Grammy winner and Emmy nominee for her Broadway performance in Hamilton, Goldsberry starred as Nettie in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple and as Mimi in Rent, along with roles in TV series The Good Wife and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the movie Tick, Tick… Boom! Now, you can see her flex both her acting and musical muscles in Girls5eva Season 3—the comedy series that earned Goldsberry Critics Choice nominations in 2022 and 2023. The show recently moved to Netflix for its third season.
Girls5eva follows an early aughts girl group as they try to get the band back together 20 years later. It’s a sort of Spice Girls reunion tour meets Spinal Tap with a side of Bridesmaids. Case in point: Goldsberry, as wannabe popstar Wickie Roy, announces that, like Billie Eilish, she too can have a documentary.

Girls5eva, which is headed into its third season this week, tells the story of four women who were members of a briefly popular girl band and are now back together, two decades later, in a second attempt at success. The show pokes fun at the absurdity of the real pop culture landscapes in both the ’90s and today, but the cast and crew want to be clear: The laughs are made with love.
“The show, for us, has always been this beautiful kind of healing,” star Renee Elise Goldsberry tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It gives refuge.”
The Tiny Fey-produced comedy is written and created by Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and stars Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps.
Part of that healing, Goldsberry and her castmates say, comes from their regard for Scardino’s source material.

Best Actress has come down to the two-horse race we always thought it would do as we enter Oscars weekend. “Poor Things” star Emma Stone took home the Best Comedy Actress Golden Globe as well as the Critics Choice and BAFTA awards for Best Actress. Meanwhile, “Killers of the Flower Moon” performer Lily Gladstone landed the Best Drama Actress Golden Globe and snagged the SAG award for Best Actress. That has left us Oscarologists split. Gladstone is slightly ahead in our Oscars odds chart for Best Actress but, truthfully, it could go either way.
Or could it go the same way?
Could Stone and Gladstone produce a delightful shock and share the Best Actress Oscar in a tie? Wouldn’t that be fun? Stone and Gladstone both seem like they’d be overjoyed if that were to happen, and so would we be. Best Actress has ended in a tie before.

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

Alexander Payne movies always do well in two areas come the Oscar nominations: writing and acting. Five of Payne’s movies have been nominated for writing while five of his flicks have also snagged acting bids. However, while “Sideways” and “The Descendants” both took home Oscars for their writing (both for Best Adapted Screenplay), no Payne movie has ever won for acting. Here’s the record.
“About Schmidt” procured a Best Actor nomination in 2003 for Jack Nicholson. He was in a two-horse race for the Best Actor gong with “Gangs of New York” star Daniel Day-Lewis but it was Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) who ended up winning by splitting the votes. Kathy Bates was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for “About Schmidt” but she lost to Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago”).
Paul Giamatti was cruelly snubbed for a Best Actor bid for “Sideways” in 2005 but two of his costars were nominated.

Film editor Kevin Tent takes pride in the fact that he and Alexander Payne grew up in the film business together. The two men have collaborated on all eight of the features Payne has directed going back to “Citizen Ruth” in 1996 and subsequently teamed up on “Election,” “About Schmidt,” “Sideways,” “Nebraska,” “The Descendants” (for which Tent scored his first Oscar nomination) and “Downsizing.” Their most recent movie together, “The Holdovers,” has found Tent honored with his second Academy Award bid for editing. “Alexander is a very loyal guy and super collaborative,” Tent observes. “We kind of clicked from the beginning. Neither of us gets super wrapped up in the drama or takes things too seriously. He often will just go, ‘What’s everyone getting worked up about? It’s just a movie.’ And that’s kind of my attitude, too.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Upon securing a spot in the 2024 Best Supporting Actress Oscar lineup, Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) officially shattered the Academy Awards record for longest span between fourth and fifth acting nominations. Following her two Best Actress wins for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she had last been recognized in that category for “Nell” (1995), making for a general nomination gap of 29 years. Coincidentally, she took this particular distinction from fellow “Silence of the Lambs” winner Anthony Hopkins, who waited 22 years between his supporting bids for “Amistad” (1998) and “The Two Popes” (2020).
Previously, the female record for longest wait for a fifth nomination was 12 years, as shared by Julianne Moore and Frances McDormand. Considering gaps between any two consecutive acting nominations, Foster ranks well behind overall record holder Judd Hirsch, whose first and second career notices for “Ordinary People” (1981) and “The Fabelmans” (2023) came 42 years apart. His female counterpart is Helen Hayes (39 years...

As of this writing the frontrunner to win this year’s Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is “The Holdovers” with 69/20 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. What was previously behind it in second place was “Barbie,” yet the Academy recently declared that script to be adapted despite Warner Bros. campaigning it as original. With “Barbie” out of the way, “Past Lives” is now in second place in this category with 4/1 odds. But I think it actually has a shot of taking down “The Holdovers” for the win.
When it comes to Alexander Payne movies at the Oscars, they’ve so far gone one of two ways. Oscar-nominated actor June Squibb has joined the voice cast of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”
The 94-year-old Squibb last worked with the Disney-owned studio for 2020’s “Soul” and 2019’s “Toy Story 4,” and has lent her voice to other animated projects including “Solar Opposites,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “The Fungies.”
Squibb’s character details are unknown, but she joins an A-list voice cast in the sequel, which hits theaters June 14. Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith and Lewis Black return as Joy, Sadness and Anger, respectively, while Tony Hale and Liza Lapira take over for Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling as Fear and Disgust after reported salary disputes.
The original “Inside Out” (2015) was set inside the mind of a little girl, Riley, whose life is uprooted when her family moves from the Midwest to San Francisco. The animated blockbuster personified emotions as they conflict on how to best navigate Riley through change.

The Golden Globe-winning star of The Holdovers on sparring with comedy greats, switching from opera to acting, and cooking as therapy
A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, Philadelphia-born actor Da’Vine Joy Randolph was nominated for a Tony award for her breakthrough performance in the 2012 Broadway stage production of Ghost: The Musical. Since then, she has worked in TV and film, starring opposite Eddie Murphy in Dolemite Is My Name and as Aunt Pooh in On the Come Up. Last week she won for best supporting actress award at the Golden Globes for her role in Alexander Payne’s bittersweet tragicomic three-hander, The Holdovers. She plays a recently bereaved mother and the longsuffering head cook at an elite New England boarding school in the 1970s, opposite Paul Giamatti’s curmudgeonly teacher, and newcomer Dominic Sessa as a troubled student.
When you were first approached by Alexander Payne, you didn’t know who he was.

The revival of Night Court on NBC has actress Melissa Rauch of The Big Bang Theory pick up the gavel at the courthouse as the daughter of Harry Stone. In our review of the new show, Alex Maidy pointed out, “The reboot of Night Court comes from the production team of Melissa Rauch, her husband Winston Rauch, and John Larroquette. All three are avid fans of the original series and have an invested interest in making this series feel like a worthwhile successor to the sitcom without turning it into a woke recreation…Showrunner and writer Dan Rubin, a veteran of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Scrubs, keeps his staff on the ball with episodes that are as wacky as the original series and consistently feel like they could have been storylines thirty years ago.”

While there are plenty of movies to catch up with during the holiday break, I recommend you make time for The Holdovers. The Alexander Payne-directed comedic drama stars Paul Giamatti in one of his most outstanding roles, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa in his feature film debut. The Holdovers is already available on PVOD, but it’s coming to Peacock on December 29.
Some people enjoy spending holidays alone, but for others, it’s a painful reminder of having no one else to share the merriment and make new memories. In Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti’s Paul Hunham learns the value of opening his heart to a troubled student during a lonely Christmas break. The feature marks a welcomed return for Payne, whose previous directorial effort was for the social satire Downsizing, starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, and Hong Chau.
Here is the official synopsis for The Holdovers,...

In 2000 – merely two years after she scored her first Golden Globe nomination for her supporting turn in “Boogie Nights” – Julianne Moore earned concurrent lead notices from the same organization for “The End of the Affair” (drama) and “An Ideal Husband” (comedy/musical). That instance of dual recognition made her the 16th woman to have competed for all three possible film acting Golden Globes, joining the likes of Jane Fonda, Shirley MacLaine, and Emma Thompson.
Now, two decades deeper into her career, she just landed another Best Film Supporting Actress bid for “May December,” which makes her only the third performer with at least three mentions in each film Golden Globe category.
With this new film nomination, Moore has three of each kind. The 63-year-old’s sophomore supporting notice came in 2010 for “A Single Man,” while her remaining lead bids were for the comedies “The Kids Are All Right” (2011) and “Maps to the Stars...

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association is announcing winners for the best films and performances of 2023.
After Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” won the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Awards for best film, all eyes are on the California journalists to see if they will opt for something else or continue the lovefest for one of cinema’s most adored auteurs.
Last year, the West Coast organization had two films tied for its top prize. Todd Field’s psychological drama “Tár” and the eventual best picture-winning dramedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once” from the Daniels.

Very few performers who became Golden Globe nominees in their teens can claim to have stayed in the organization’s good graces as adults, but, with 13 notices and three wins spread over nearly 30 years, Leonardo DiCaprio is more justified in doing so than anyone else. As it happens, the film star has picked up multiple Golden Globe bids during each decade of his adult life, and he is now working on squeezing in another just before he enters his 50s. If he winds up clinching his third Best Film Drama Actor trophy for “Killers of the Flower Moon” this winter, he will tie the illustrious record for most victories in that category.
DiCaprio’s previous Golden Globe wins came for his lead performances in the dramas “The Aviator” (2005) and “The Revenant” (2016) and the comedy “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014). This potential new drama bid would be his ninth, following unsuccessful...

This article has been corrected to include Alexander Payne’s first feature film, “Citizen Ruth.”
Alexander Payne has a near-perfect record when it comes to his movies being nominated for Academy Awards. The acclaimed writer, director, and producer — one of our very best — has made eight movies so far including his latest flick “The Holdovers” and five of them have been nominated for Oscars. Here’s the breakdown.
Payne’s debut feature film was “Citizen Ruth” (“The Passion of Martin” was only 49 minutes), which follows Laura Dern as a drug-addicted pregnant woman who finds herself in the middle of an abortion debate as she weighs up her choices regarding the pregnancy. This 1996 movie was not nominated for any Oscars.
His next movie was “Election,” which stars Matthew Broderick as a high school teacher who meets his match with Reese Witherspoon‘s over-achieving student. In 2000, the film was nominated for Best...

Oscar-winning writer/director Alexander Payne is one of the most acclaimed writer/directors of his generation. He specializes in films, such as “Sideways” and “The Descendants,” that can be darkly funny while at the same time being extremely moving. His depictions of the flawed character that he creates has almost become a genre unto itself — say a film is “like an Alexander Payne movie,” and film fans will know exactly what you mean.
Payne has a remarkable track record at the Academy Awards — he has made seven films and has earned seven Oscar nominations. Granted, it wasn’t one for each film, but percentage-wise, that’s still enormously impressive. And of those seven noms, he has won two Oscars for co-writing 2004’s “Sideways” and 2011’s “The Descendants.” In addition, he has received four Golden Globe nominations for his directorial work.

Two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Alexander Payne shared his passion for film and his thoughts on contemporary American cinema with the audience at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon where he is premiering his eighth feature film, “The Holdovers,” under the French title “Winter Break,” on October 15th.
In a conversation skilfully led and translated by Los Angeles-based French film journalist Didier Allouch, Payne drew laughs from the Lumière crowd when he explained that the secret to making good films was “keeping your budgets low.”
“John Huston approached Luis Buñuel one day and asked him, ‘How is it that you make these wonderful films, like “Viridiana” and “The Exterminating Angel”?’ And Buñuel replied, ‘How much money do you make and how much money do you think I make?’” said Payne with a smile.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) unveiled its first wave of 60 selections on Monday, July 24. The slate includes 37 world premieres, seven international openings and 12 North American debuts and will be held September 7 – 17, 2023. See the full lineup of films (so far) below.
Among the standouts is “The Holdovers,” a caustic Christmas comedy from “About Schmidt” and “Sideways” writer-director Alexander Payne. Pundits expect the film could emerge from the festival as a major Oscar player in several races, including Best Picture. Craig Gillespie’s “Dumb Money,” a retelling of the GameStop short squeeze starring Paul Dano, and David Yates’ “Pain Hustlers,” a pharma satire with Emily Blunt, could land two previously overlooked actors their first Oscar spotlight.

Some people enjoy spending holidays alone, but for others, it’s a painful reminder of having no one else to share the merriment and make new memories. In Alexander Payne‘s The Holdovers trailer, Paul Giamatti‘s Paul Hunham learns the value of opening his heart to a troubled student during a lonely Christmas break. The feature marks a welcomed return for Payne, whose previous directorial effort was for the social satire Downsizing starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, and Hong Chau.
Here is the official synopsis for The Holdovers, courtesy of Focus Features:
From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) — and...

“‘May December’ is a tour-de-force of writing, acting, and directing: a film built on moment-to-moment surprise, as thought-provoking as it is purely pleasurable,” said Dennis Lim, the artistic director at the New York Film Festival, in a press release. “It cements Todd Haynes’s place as one of American cinema’s most brilliant mischief-makers and as an all-time great director of actors. Todd has been a consistent presence at the New York Film Festival for almost his entire career, and we are very excited to open this edition with one of his most dazzling achievements.”

"I don't want you to tell us what you do, I want you to tell us who you are..." The great Jack Nicholson just turned 86 this year. In celebration of most recent birthday, Little White Lies debuted this terrific video retrospective looking back at his illustrious career in cinema. A five-minute-long journey through his many iconic characters. The Transformation of Jack Nicholson is the latest video made by Portuguese editor Luís Azevedo (who we've featured many times before). It contains footage from many of Jack Nicholson's best roles throughout his five decades in movies. In 1970, he starred in Five Easy Pieces in what became his persona-defining role. Aside from The Shining, clips in this are from his best films including The Departed, A Few Good Men, Hoffa, Chinatown, Anger Management, Mars Attacks, The Two Jakes, About Schmidt, Easy Rider, and of course One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Chris Sanders is in final negotiations to voice the character of Stitch in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Tia Carrere, who originally voiced Nani in the first film, will also play the newly-created Mrs. Kekoa, while Amy Hill will star as a new character named Tūtū.
Sanders, who wrote and directed the original feature alongside Dean DeBlois, voiced the creature, which he also created, in the 2002 Lilo & Stitch, as well as Lilo & Stitch: The Series (2003-2006). Sanders has been rumored to return as Stitch for years, but in a 2022 interview with Syfy Wire, he said he hadn’t been officially approached by the studio.
Newcomer Maia Kealoha is playing Lilo, while Sydney Elizebeth Agudong is playing Nani. Kahiau Machado was cast as David Kawena last week, but has since been recast with Kaipot Dudoit. During Disney’s vetting process, previous posts in which...

Jack Nicholson has had one of the more varied careers in Hollywood. He has appeared in smaller, intense independent dramas, broad comedies, Oscar-bait films, surreal experimental movies, and several well-moneyed Hollywood blockbusters. Indeed, Nicholson was involved in one of the more notable blockbusters of all time, Tim Burton's 1989 film "Batman," where he played the Joker. Famously, Nicholson managed to negotiate a cut of the film's merchandising profits into his salary, making him a very, very rich man.
Nicholson has a talent for playing intense types of characters. He can be friendly or threatening, but he is an expert in taking up a room. In a way, his performance in Alexander Payne's 2002 dramedy "About Schmidt" might be his best, as it's the one notable time he's played a deliberately dull, buttoned-down character.
Given Nicholson's stature as a celebrity, one might think the actor had free reign to select whatever projects he wanted.

It seems there's a new portmanteau of an actor's name and the word "renaissance" cropping up all the time. In the early 2010s, we had the "McConaissance" and now Oscar winner Brendan Fraser is enjoying his own "Brenaissance." Michael Keaton, however, escaped the dreaded portmanteau when he re-ascended to superstar status with 2014's "Birdman." And he's since maintained that status with memorable turns in everything from the Oscar-winning "Spotlight" to Hulu's excellent chronicle of the opioid epidemic "Dopesick" — even debuting in the MCU as Vulture in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
Soon, Keaton will be returning as Batman in "The Flash," some 30 years after walking away from the role. He's also gearing up for his directorial debut with "Knox Goes Away", which means that the 71-year-old is still a very busy man.
Now, according to a Deadline report, he'll be starring alongside Mila Kunis in "Goodrich," which looks set to bring Keaton...

Almost every year there’s at least one actor who sweeps through all the major precursors prior to the Oscars. But this year none of the four acting categories will have had a sweeper through the entire season. The last time a scenario like this played out was actually way back in 2002.

Twenty years ago, the road to the Best Actor Oscar took a most unexpected turn. For most of the season, the race was seen as being between Jack Nicholson in “About Schmidt” and Daniel Day-Lewis in “Gangs of New York.” Nicholson appeared to have the early lead when he claimed the Golden Globe, then Day-Lewis jumped ahead when he nabbed the SAG Award.
And then came the Oscar shocker. Halle Berry opened the envelope and announced Adrien Brody in “The Pianist” the winner. Nobody was more surprised than Brody himself, who moments later admitted that he had stopped preparing acceptance speeches after losing at all of the previous ceremonies.
We haven’t had a Best Actor shocker like that since then. But hold onto your hats, folks. The awards gods are about to mark the 20-year Brody Oscar anniversary with another genuine jaw-dropper. Here are five reasons why Colin Farrell...

“Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” sweep at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards ensured the end of one long-running streak: For the first time in 20 years, there won’t be a single acting sweeper during Oscar season.
Sweeps of the acting categories across the televised awards — Golden Globes, Critics Choice, SAG, BAFTAs and the Oscars — have become increasingly common over the years after BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 22 years ago. Even in very chaotic seasons, there has been at least one category over the past 19 years with a full sweep, like Best Supporting Actor with Heath Ledger (2008’s “The Dark Knight”) or two years ago with Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”).
Heading into the SAG Awards, Cate Blanchett (“TÁR”) was the only performer left who could win all four televised precursors en route to the Oscar after having claimed the drama actress Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award and BAFTA.

Oscar flashback 20 years ago to 2003: Adrien Brody, Nicole Kidman, Eminem and a ‘Chicago’ domination
It was a night of surprise wins, of records being broken or tied, of Oscar firsts and of honoring acting legends. On March 23, 2003, Steve Martin hosted the 75th Academy Awards ceremony, which had the lowest viewership of any Oscar telecast up to that point. Even though there were memorable moments, it was a more somber ceremony, as the war on Iraq had been declared a few days prior, and the event was nearly delayed. It was decided to carry on with less fanfare and a less extravagant red carpet, and a few actors chose to bow out of presenting. Let’s flashback 20 years to 2003 and revisit that event on ABC.
Five films were up for Best Picture, with two coming into the night with strong leads in nominations; one ended the night at the forefront with six wins, and the other left empty-handed. Martin Scorsese‘s historical epic “Gangs of New York...

Alexander Payne’s newest film is heading to theaters this fall. “The Holdovers,” a new comedy from the “Election” and “Descendants” director, will open in limited release on November 10, Focus Features announced Thursday. After two weeks, the film will expand into wide release on November 22, ahead of Thanksgiving Day.
Payne’s eighth directorial effort, “The Holdovers” stars Paul Giamatti, “Dolemite Is My Name” breakout Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and newcomer Dominic Sessa. Per the logline, the film is a period piece set in the middle of the Vietnam War that focuses on a curmudgeonly New England prep school instructor Paul Hunham (Giamatti) who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to look after the handful of students remaining at school during the holiday. Initially bitter over the assignment, Paul forms an unexpected bond with the rebellious but brilliant student Angus (Sessa) and with Mary (Randolph), the school’s head...

Over the last five years, society has gotten a crash course in Hollywood sexism. With Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor’s groundbreaking reporting on Harvey Weinstein came countless other stories of women’s mistreatment at the hands of producers, directors and even fellow actors.
Some of the most arresting stories along these lines come from crew members, like stunt coordinators who work on rape scenes. In her new documentary “Body Parts,” Kristy Guevara-Flanagan interviews actors, film and TV creators, and crew members who work behind the scenes to put sex onscreen.
Though the film overwhelmingly focuses on big names like Joey Soloway and Rose McGowan, its strongest material comes from accounts by less glitzy experts: body doubles, scholars, intimacy coordinators and one remorseful visual effects artist.
The film’s thesis is nothing new:...

Warren R. Schmidt, the title character played from Alexander Payne's 2002 dramedy "About Schmidt," was a large departure for actor Jack Nicholson. Throughout his career, Nicholson has played a wide variety of incredibly intense, sometimes even broad roles. Even when he played characters who are professional or buttoned down, he carries with him an intellectual intensity, a confidence, a terrifying, underlying rage, that often sees his characters emerging as fierce and heightened.
Schmidt is perhaps the only time Nicholson has played a character defined by how plain he is. Warren Schmidt is a man of routine. He works in a room that is little more than...

Following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Film, Noah Baumbach’s feature take of Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel White Noise will also open the 60th New York Film Festival, making its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall on September 30.
In the Netflix movie, Adam Driver plays Jack Gladney, an ostentatious “Hitler Studies” professor and father-of-four whose comfortable suburban college town life and marriage to the secretive Babette (Greta Gerwig) are upended after a horrifying nearby accident creates an airborne toxic event of frightening and unknowable proportions. DeLillo’s novel is known for being a pop-philosophical nightmare on unbounded consumerism, ecological catastrophe, and the American obsession with death.
“In 1985 my father and I drove from Brooklyn to see Kurosawa’s Ran open the 23rd NYFF, the same year that he brought home the hardback of Don DeLillo’s White Noise,” said Baumbach. “Opening the 60th NYFF with White...

For the second season of Fox’s Name That Tune, the fun revival of the iconic game show brings back host Jane Krakowski (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and bandleader Randy Jackson (American Idol), but there’s a new addition this time around — stars! Celebrity contestants will now be in the mix as they are pitted against each other to guess iconic songs in just a few notes. As before, each episode is split into two half-hour contests where two players are pitted against each other to beat the clock and see who has the better (and quickest) knowledge of songs performed by a live band and singers. We’ll still get everyday folks on episodes but additionally, the March 29 premiere will feature Super Bowl vets Vernon Davis and Victor Cruz playing against one another for the charities of their choice, as well as singer-actress JoJo facing off against TV personality Kelly Osbourne.

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Andrew Garfield, Will Smith (“King Richard”), and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”). Smith (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Cumberbatch (19/5), Garfield (4/1), Washington (9/2), and Bardem (9/2).
All five of these men have contended here at least once before, making theirs the first Best Actor lineup since 1981 to include no first-time acting nominees. Furthermore, it is the very first to consist only of previous lead nominees. The last time this came close to happening was in 2003, when newcomer and eventual victor Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) competed against category veterans Nicolas Cage (“Adaptation”), Michael Caine (“The Quiet American”), Daniel Day-Lewis (“Gangs of New York”), and Jack Nicholson (“About Schmidt”).

Jack Nicholson wanted to stage a boycott against the 2003 Academy Awards due to the Iraq War, revealed Adrien Brody in a recent interview with the Sunday Times (via Yahoo). The United States’ invasion of Iraq began just days before the 2003 Oscars ceremony. According to Brody, Nicholson invited all of the 2003 best actor nominees over to his house to discuss how they should respond to the war. Nicholson reportedly urged the nominees in the category to boycott the ceremony.
“I said, ‘I don’t know about you guys, but I’m going,’” Brody told the Times. “I said, ‘I kind of have to show up. My parents are coming. This doesn’t come around too often. I know you guys are all winners. You can sit it out. But I can’t.’”
