"It's no fun wearing my Tintin shirt now that the masses know who he is." The drawing over that caption is superfluous. Still, the cartoon in this week's New Yorker nicely sums up the shift in Tintin's status in the Us since the release of Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin — his face has migrated from imported T-shirts to dog food ads.
As with another 3D spectacle currently in theaters, Pina, we've already had two roundups on Spielberg's Tintin, the first in October, an entry that kicked off with initial reactions to the film's premiere and eventually segued into more considered reviews in the British and European press, and the second in November, an entry gathering takes from the Tintinologists and reviews from AFI Fest. So I'll try to keep it brief in this third go-round, focusing more on Hergé than Spielberg, beginning with Charles McGrath's introduction in the video embedded above.

I grew up on Hergé’s Adventures of Tintin, long before I knew there were graphic albums featuring Belgium’s greatest export after chocolate. Then, in the 1990s, they tried again with different results and it is that latter series being collected on DVD this month from Shout! Factory.

Can director Steven Spielberg bring Herge's beloved comic book character to life? Here's James' review of The Adventures Of Tintin...
Once upon a time, Steven Spielberg was the filmmaker I loved the most. I wouldn’t call it a sophisticated relationship, but it was deeply felt and ran like a golden thread through my childhood up until the dawn of adulthood.
However, as the years passed, that love cooled, giving way to disappointment and ultimately resentment. Could the director who’d so scared me with Jaws, thrilled me with Raiders Of The Lost Ark and touched my little heart with E.T. really be churning out such half-formed and woolly headed stuff as The Terminal and War Of The Worlds?
It’s therefore heartening to report that the Spielberg of my (and so many others) childhood is back, and firing on all cylinders for his maiden excursion into the worlds of both motion-capture and 3D filmmaking.
