Could this be the first exploitation picture?
I do believe I have stumbled upon the very first exploitation picture ever made; and no it wasn't by David Friedman or Kroger Babb or K. Gordon Murray or anyone like that. Thomas Edison, the pioneer of moving pictures themselves, also gave us the first exploitation movie! Running a scant 2 mins 2 secs the movie offers us a look inside what is supposed to be a brothel in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. Several women sit drinking beer and conversing while a lone male customer, who appears to be Mexican, drinks himself into unconsciousness. While he is out cold one of the "ladies" relieves him of his watch and wallet. When he wakes up and finds his valuables gone he creates such a fuss a cop comes running in our of nowhere and carts him off for disturbing the peace! No that isn't then end, there is one more little bit to be seen but I will not spoil it for you. True there are no closeups and only one angle but heck, it was a moving picture and that was what people cared about in those days. Dave Friedman once said "The day after the movie camera was invented some guy talked his girlfriend into taking her clothes off and the exploitation film was born." Well Dave, we're pals and I don't want to contradict you but it did not happen quite THAT fast, but here is proof that the trend did start rather quickly.
