Erika Werner, an anesthesiologist and assistant director of the Belmont Clinic, has been serving a prison sentence for a year and a half. Her only fault was signing a false death certificate in order to cover up for her lover, the cardiologist Alain Bornand. During an argument between Alain and his former mistress, Helga, who claimed to be pregnant with his child, the young woman fell to her death. In prison, Erika feels all the worse as she is rejected by her fellow inmates. As for Alain, forced to marry the daughter of the director of the clinic, Patricia Rateaux, who had provided him with an alibi for the night of the tragedy, he has started drinking. His work no longer interests him and there is talk of divorce.
