- Only twenty kilometres west of Athens lies the small industrial city of Eleusis. But in ancient Greece, Eleusis was the home of the Eleusinian Mysteries and Demeter--one of the original Twelve Olympians and the goddess the harvest, grain, and fertility--and her daughter, Persephone. Nowadays, Eleusis hosts some of Greece's major industries; however, not without grave environmental consequences.
